PET FOOD AND ALPO FOR BRAINS
Regular folks, when they want to do research, read and take notes. Myself, wishing to be contrary and do things different not because it makes sense but simply because it defies convention, I just go along and suck up information in an unorganized manner and then later try to remember where I read about something. It is kind of like the unorganized desk method of filing. Clean it up and you can’t find anything. Of course this doesn’t always work great. I can’t find the description in turning Berden primed ammunition into Boxer and that is quite disappointing. And I remember several articles on making your own pet food but when I try to find them again I just come up on a bunch of worthless nonsense. For every article telling you to do something, another contradicts it. And you have simply outrageous claims. My cat needs vegetables? When did that happen? Last I checked when a feline goes stalking in the garden it is after a rodent, not asparagus. How did Hippies figure out a healthy carnivore needs veggies?

About the only thing I came up with that didn’t have conflicting information was the ratio of meat to grain if you make your own pet food. Even that could be wrong, but it seems reasonable anyway. Dogs need 25% meat and cats need 50%. Take your cooked grain such as rice and add meat to it. Cats will need that ground up. This is about the only information I could find that wasn’t dangerous or contradictory. If anyone has a good source for more information, please share it. My plan is to use the cats as they should be, as hunters for anything trying to share my food storage. A few large bags of food should last a long time supplemented in such a manner. Dogs are a different matter, requiring a lot of food. But they are a much better alarm than any electronics. A few galvanized trash cans full of Old Roy is still a great investment. After that its going to have to be homemade. I’m really not passing along great information here so much as soliciting comments. Easy and/or cheap recipes would be welcome.

Now to the crap for brains section, more politely referred to as Alpo for brains. National Pravda Radio covered the local plan in Reno Nevada for college students to stay safe. This following a local student being abducted from student housing, raped and killed. Everyone is in a tizzy. Now for the stupid part. The intrepid leaders of the University came out with wallet size cards with a few tips on safety. Travel in groups. Lock your windows and doors. And they were offered a plastic whistle free of charge. Now, who are the idiots here? The school staff for coming up with something so obvious, or the students who were too stupid to already know that? The biggest component of college costs is salaries. These Alpo for brains are getting paid so much that college inflation is in double digits and this is the best they can do? The Nevada governor gets a wad in his panties about a budget shortage ( who could have thought the rise in property taxes wouldn’t last forever? ) and tells everyone to cut a few percentage points from the upcoming fiscal year. You would have thought college campuses left and right were closing down, the yells of anguish that ensued. How in the name of all that is good and just can we be expected to survive without salary increases, department growth and bigger stadiums? Yet they sure as heck aren’t getting a raise on merit if you judge from their lame ass safety guide.

Or is it that students are too stupid to grasp anything more than a few pleas for common sense? This they treat as divine wisdom from on high. Are they really so sheltered in their lives that they can’t figure out on their own how not to live in a crime ridden city? Did mommy and daddy protect them from reality for eighteen years, and now they expect the University to do the same for another four? Do we want our future leaders do be this stupid? I’m not trying to blame the victim here. I don’t know exactly what happened. She could have been stupid and left the door next to her bed unlocked. Or it could have been something outside her control. What I am questioning is the supposed “wisdom” that is being spouted after the attack. This is pudding head thinking at its finest. If the University is incapable of better, former students should sue for a tuition refund because they sure got a crappy education for their money. If the students are that stupid their parents should save their money and just ship the kid over to the middle east as cannon fodder.

On converting Berdan primer cases to Boxer, I would suggest looking up George Nonte. The man was one of the reloading gurus back in the 60's and 70's. Wrote several books on the subject. He even talks about doing things such as sizing cast bullets through a polished hole in strap iron and that sort of thing.
On why cats, and dogs need vegatables. The reason is that when Fluffy or Rover catch a mouse or a rabbit, they don't just eat the meat. They eat the whole thing, bones, hair, intestines including what is in them and so get many things that isn't in a straight meat diet. In fact if you feed a cat straight meat they will get a condition, I can't remember the name of it, where their bones turn rubbery.

Thanks for a good post.
Currently, I feed my dogs and cat a raws foods diet. Like Tex noted a raws foods diet resembles what these animals would eat in the wilds.
But as the recession deepens and after the SHTF, I'm not sure I will be able to afford to buy the meat, so I am starting to stockpile a high-grade dry food in galvenized trash cans.
Also, we have not always had commerical pet foods. My grandmother on my father's side told me that here in the South, in the early 1900s, her daddy use to feed his hunting dogs pans of cornbread with buttermilk and table scraps. My mother told me that her mother fed their dog table scraps in the 20s and 30s, like most people did during that time.
I've been feeding my dog homemade food for months now. I just make 3 cups of rice, 1 lb of meat and a can of vegetables. He gets around 1.5 - 2 cups twice a day. He's a 50 lb samoyed and it lasts him at least a few days. If I run out and I'm feeling too lazy to cook up another batch I just give him a few pieces of bread, a can of tuna and some vegetables. If things get really really tight and I have trouble affording meat then he's getting the same beans and rice that I'll be living off of.
Our education system is fucked up. A big part of it is just the types of people that are drawn to teaching. These are people that want to mold young minds and make them think the way that they do because they think that it will help form a better future.
I wish they would allow us to be armed on our campuses. It is the only way to stop all this garbage.

When a lion catches an antelope, he rips open the belly to eat the intestines first.
predators eat vegetables by eating the intestines (filled with digested greens) of their vegetarian prey.
I also stock high grade dog food in garbage cans. Our 225 pound male Mastiff and 100 pound female Bermese Mountain Dog eat a ton of food. Some of which is table scraps and even the cats food if he is not fast enough. May be the cat sometime you just never know...
Jim, I thought I had my links for healthy cat food well organized, but guess not. I did find one, which I think was the best anyway, at least it has links to other pages/sites with good info on animal care. Cat do need a very high protein diet, but as others have said, they also need some vegetables, which they would get from their prey. Here is the link to
Sherley's wellness cafe . It is worth having a good look around on the site for other info. On the above page you will find a link or two which are no longer active, but here the
BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet page from the Internet Archive where you can get the other pages which are no longer live. Some, unfortunately, are a bit wonky in the archive, with images missing, and double-layer text etc., but most of the info is there. Its the best I have found, which makes a lot of sense.
But also
read this on foods toxic to cats, and this , as the BARF diet, for example, lists garlic in the recipe. My inclination would be to add the kind of greens the rodent would eat, maybe dandelion leaves or such, and not exotic vegetables, which don't make sense in this context.
I too wonder how to feed the pets for an extended time come SHTF. Cats are a bit more independent and can usually shift for themselves. However dogs need alot of food.
Like you mentioned, dogs are better than electronics by far for detecting intruders.
In any case, dry dog food might also make excellent survival rations for humans, when you think about it.
Sure, some of you will say "ohhhh, I can NEVER eat dogfood! I would rather starve.". Yeah, right. Go a month without food and see how fast you will be chowing down next to Fido!
IF SHTF, Fido is going to get awfully nervous next to hungry people. Not wanting to get gross, but there are dog recipes out there, and some breeds specifically designed for food source.
I dont like feeding my dog anything but table scraps, though she gets dry commercial food for when we just aint got a whole bunch left over after dinner [though with my three rugrats usually there is plenty]. When i was hunting with hounds I went to the butcher shop once every couple weeks and picked up a few garbage cans of scraps, tossed them in a freezer or two specifically for the dogs and they hunted better than any of my friends dogs did who only got commercial dry food and occasional meat and bones.
My dog is german shepard x wolf and she dont eat much daily, but then again we are not as active as we once were. wheni get another dog or three to replace her, I am thinking of something along the line of a jack russel out of hunting lines and not show lines [there is a big difference] and a pair or three of those little buggers are better than two big dogs, particularly if trained a wee bit for ease of handling. they tend to eat less in the long haul.
As for the education snafu, gotta remeber it college graduates teaching the courses and setting policy, not the folks who went to work as soon as they got old enough..... ultimately it is the parents who are are fault here, if they did not teach their children self defense, you cant really expect anyone else to either.

Cats also eat tender green grasses, flowers, herbs, and various other vegetable matter when outside (they love ferns, for instance). Watch them sometime, it is very relaxing. Makes me wonder what the world would be like if we slept 18 hours a day.
