A FUNGUS AMONGST US
Mmmm…wheat fungus. Yummy stuff. In the 1950’s the US had an outbreak on the spring crop and lost 40%. That was the big push behind the Green Revolution, breeding stem rust resistant strains of wheat. However, Mother Nature, being the practical joker that she is, has given us almost half a century of great wheat harvests and then after we get all fat and happy and stop worrying about such things before comes up with a new and improved wheat disease called somewhat unromantically, UG99. Now, take your normal run of the mill wheat fungus and introduce it to your fields of grain and you will lose some of your crop. However, the new kid on the block is like a retreating army practicing slash and burn and will in a lot of cases destroy the entire crop. Very unsportsmanlike.
This wonderful fungus started in Uganda in 1999. It had gotten into Kenya by 2001 and Ethiopia by 2003. Now, I know what most of you are thinking. You figure, hey, this is Africa we are talking about. Even with AIDS, drought and now this new wheat fungus they are still breeding like there is no tomorrow. This news doesn’t effect me in the slightest. Well, actually, it could. It has now been found in Iran and it could have gotten as far as Pakistan. Last year there was a “strong wind event” recorded that for three days effected areas from Yemen to Pakistan to India and China. So spores could have already traveled farther than Iran. Pakistan and then India. A lot of mouths to feed there that are dependant on wheat. Up to three quarters of the wheat already planted in India and Pakistan is the type most susceptible to the fungus. This could effect a billion people.
Even if this new rust fails to mushroom as a huge problem, we are already seeing global grain problems. First was the increased droughts effecting a lot of the globe. Grain harvests were down sharply. Then Monkey Man Bush decided that we don’t need no stinking corn and totally caved to ADM and other Agri giants just like he caved to Big Oil ( okay, he didn’t really cave, he just paid back his handlers for the election they rigged for him ). The EU decided that rapeseed and wheat were better off as ethanol and Brazil has a lot of acreage in production for bio-fuels in the form of sugar. This is soil and resources not available to grow human food. Look at how prices have risen just on these two problems and imagine what would happen if 20% of the wheat crop was wiped out by a fungus ( this is the amount Pakistan and India alone contribute to the global supply ).
But wait! A lone figure comes riding to our rescue. It’s Monsanto and other purveyors of genetically modified organisms. You could just lift the ban on GMO patented seeds, they whisper seductively. We will be your friend. We will be your buddy. No one will love you long time like we do. Even if we ignored the problems of GM foods and the monopoly on seed they would have, the problem is still that no cure is in sight. Even if an effective fungus was available now ( which it isn’t ) it would still take two or three years of planting before we could replace even a fifth of the current acreage with the new strain. In other words, hardly effective at all for averting crop failures immediately. Yes, you need to plan long term. But at the cost of selling your soul to the Devil?
The above was largely taken from the article:
www.financialsense.com/editorials/engdahl/2008/0331.html and is basically pointing out a possible danger. This is great, but hardly entertaining or amusing. So now I would like to spin a fantastic yarn and weave a conspiracy theory in to the plot. I’m not saying it is very feasible, but it is certainly possible. I mean, come on. This is the kind of good stuff that makes for great fodder feeding the Illuminati myth. Big Ag has been consolidating its hold over wheat production for generations. No conspiracy there, just a monopoly forming ( such as with the Federal Reserve Bank ). But it is quit easy to view the push for GM Frankenfood as evil and wicked. These people are so greedy they won’t stop until the entire globe needs to buy their seed anew every planting cycle for everything consumed. So what is to stop greedy businesses from starting to push the law to move to the next level? I’m not trying to paint business or capitalism as evil. I like free markets. Yet they have always been more of an ideal than a reality. In practice we just have an aborted mutated version where business and government and bankers form an incestuous relationship. They don’t win customers, they force feed them through government decree at inflated prices.
So, anyone here really believe business keeps their hands clean and pure? Anyone? You, in the back of the class! You’re a retard. Write on the blackboard fifty times “ I am a retard and of course big business tries to bend me over and give me the high hard one and I’d probably like it”. Look what I have to work with here. Actually, I think the question we should be asking ourselves is not “did Big Ag spread a laboratory designed virus to really increase its profits?” but rather “who wouldn’t want to do this?”. I mean, what about the military ( remember the anthrax scare from the warfare lab specimen? ) or the CIA. It would either be a great way to strike a blow against Muslims ( although there are probably more of them in Europe now than the middle east ) or destabilize Pakistan which is nuclear armed which takes the region into a hot war which allows the US to nuke the place pretty much indiscriminately. Or a pretext to invade to restore stability. Iran being starved on purpose? Come on, work with me here. This is fun stuff. There are a lot of reasons to see this happen. And I can hear you snickering at me. You’re so super paranoid, Jim. Jim is off his meds again. But, hey, wasn’t all this accepted as a given when we were at Cold War? We have just changed the target from Slavs to Towel Heads.
Someone has done contingency plans on this one, I’m sure. Even if no one does it doesn’t mean they won’t or don’t want to. Heck, the CIA could be tricking the GM ( that’s the Genetic Manipulators, not General Motors- those morons would design a piece of sheet metal wrong, let alone a bio weapon ) boys into thinking it was their idea so as to increase profit. The CIA has deniability. In the end the bad guys are hurt, our side has a weapon for controlling food, our home grown companies earn extra cash, the military industrial complex gets another front in the Forever War. What is not to like? This is a slam dunk. And remember, you might not have heard it here first but that’s only because I need to sleep sometime and have to turn off my Wonderful Mode sometimes.
Vlad, thanks for the new issues index, buddy. He knows my idea of organized is to have all the scribbled napkins in the same pile. I need all the help I can get.
