grid blues

GRID BLUES
In moments of weakness when I think that there might be places better than Nevada ( even though I know better ) I might dream about locations such as Kentucky. Perhaps not that state in particular, too much Yankee contamination ( I don't hate you personally but you have to admit that after you won the War Of Northern Aggression things went to hell within fifty years- states rights triumphant would never have allowed the Federal Reserve to be created so that the US dollar would lose 99% of its value in less than a century and the entire global economy would be sucked down with that currency, so thanks whole big bunches you bastards ). And certainly not now that the state is without power for the next two weeks. In Florida when a hurricane knocked out the power, two weeks was just an inconvenience. Well, assuming you had a basic stockpile and weren't like certain ghetto areas whose inhabitants can be traced back to Obammy's birthplace of A Certain Continent That Dare Not Speak Its Name Upon Punishment Of Reeducation Camps who are so ignorant they can't figure out a used 40 ounce beer bottle can also store drinking water and so the first day of power down they line up for increased welfare water.
*
Okay, so even though Kentucky is shot through with rot from Yankee influence, I still feel for the poor slobs there living out of their dark and frigid McMansions. What a crappy time to be without power. Am I the only one who gets that feeling that we have been living through the early signs of energy infrastructure break down and it is not some soon to occur future event but already passed into history? Kind of like Peak Oil. Is it past time to admit the system is in eminent danger of not coming back on one day, turning into a Third World grid whose only reliable feature is how unreliable it is? Should you go beyond a two week power outage plan to a more permanent grid down forever plan?
*
I miss the power grid. It was so economical to run electrical power. You could watch TV all day and play on the computer all night and the power bill would be equivalent to a half hours minimum wage for the month. You could have 24/7 heat for $30 a month ( okay, not huge amounts of heat, but enough for a trailer ). Coming close to 1% of electrical usage off grid cost a hundred times as much. Yet, the cheap price of grid power is now showing up as much more expensive than thought. Our near total dependence is proving life threatening. As the population of this country explodes rapidly ( thirty years to increase 15%, now 1% a year, roughly ) NIMBY and imported fuel shortages and lack of credit for building mean the population is outpacing power generation. The grid is being overloaded and failing. On top of the decades of neglect as corporate assmunches neglected maintenance in favor of quarterly profits. On top of whatever the lawyers sucked out through litigation. And this is before electrical usage is increased when natural gas becomes scarce or heating oil becomes dear.
*
Like everything else in our country, multiple problems combine to provide "hundred year" storms. The perfect storm. Negatives feeding on each other. For now, I'm glad I'm off grid. I am not energy independent, needing propane. But stocking up for the winter beforehand does have a certain calming effect. But at least I don't have one extra worry, that of the power failing. I can already hear one of my trolls, lurching out of his hibernation, bellowing how I'm a loser for living in a trailer and staying cold all winter and how he's making millions working hard and living the good life and driving an SUV while I peddle to work, blah, blah. Your choice, live dependant on the system. I'll live in genteel poverty and insulate myself from at least some of the dangers of the system.

Mr. Dakin,

Could you go into detail about your off the grid power?

Are pics possible of your system?

Wind? Solar? I've seen you mention hauling water, so I would venture to guess you don't have micro-hydro power off a creek or something like that.

This is probably a good time for all of us to review The Olduvai Theory. And then to be prepared for living the low-power lifestyle.

gee whiz,

i just did a google for *truck driving jobs*, and got page after page of results for trucker employment agencies... a little closer look and most were selling a "Make $100,000 a Year as a Trucker"... "I make 53c a mile and so can you..."

well that's 200,000 miles per year. can you drive 1,000 miles a day, 200 days a year ? of course, if you look closer the handful of advertised trucking jobs are actually paying 30c a mile. plus you have to pay for your weekly CDL drug screenings... that is if you can get a trucking job: 35,000 layoffs last week in trucking !!!!

so Mr. Anonymous Puberty 12:43, i'm going to guess from the time stamp that you were on your grade school's computer, because some fag beat you up for your lunch money this morning and you had time to kill.....

how about some commentary and pictures of your power system, Mr. Dakin?

"In moments of weakness when I think that there might be places better than ..."

alas! home is where you make it. chances are if you move somewhere where you are miserable, you'll just be even more miserable somewhere else... of course, that's not always true, for instance, if an adventeur or opportunity lies elsewhere. or your life sucks so bad it's worth running away from...

i left a big city decades ago because i couldn't stand the noise, and ended up in the heart of the yankee wasteland...

it was a ruralish area, but before long the developers and speculators got all the brain dead locals wild with greed. so much so, they were all talking about getting rich...

so the forests got clear cut, the land got developed, and no the locals never got rich.

so now once was a quiet alcohol soaked community with a 'rural character' is now just another exurban nightmare... a safe neighboorhood, with good schools, now in economic decline.

drugs, alcoholism, real crime, creepy neighbors hiding something (and not just the salami like the old days). and now foreclosures and skrocketing unemployment.

nearby in the big city, shops are shuttering, the super dupper giant mall is emptying out.

Well, at least I'm not stuck in New York or Hell A.............

I like the weather down here but would have a hard time with a "retreat" east is the Mississippi.

Well, shucks. I usually divide people up in terms of western, midwestern, eastern, myself. I could see being the minion of a fellow westerner, but not if you're going to condemn me for living in the north.

I had a great-granny whose feet were burned by raiders after they robbed her Coin, Arkansas homestead during the Civil War. (The menfolk were away, fighting for the north.) Whether the raiders were northerners or southerners depends on which branch of the family you're talking to. I usually think of it as something that really doesn't matter any more, but if it's so important to you....

James I live in KY and while I was prepared and have fuel for the jenny, food, and water...it does suck not having power. Hopefully will be a wakeup call to all about preparedness.

Well, here in KY 1/2 a million are w/out power. We lost power over night couple days back but we have the kerosene heater so it did not really bug us.

If you wish to dream of locations be sure to consider liberty & freedom, some states are attempting to fight back the federal beast just as my Southern ancestors did before the invasion occured. Montana, Oklahoma, New Hampshire to name a few are fighting back against orwellian legislation.

I'm glad that your able to survive those cold very windy nights in Nevada with propane alone!

Bison, I notice you always end with an admonition to purchase your wares. This is smart.

I'm fond of offering you my help, don't ask me why. Sometimes I think you don't deserve it. But here once again I will give some good advice.

This little nugget is freely given in the hope that it will help you increase your sales:

If you quit referring to anyone who buys something from you as a "minion", potential buyers will no longer have to decide if that bothers them. Despite the ones who don't mind, MOST people would not like it.

I shouldn't have to tell you that, but then I shouldn't have to explain why your plan to become a nomadic herder is flawed, either. *sigh*

To the people wanting to know about his off grid power, he has already mentioned it several times, he has a couple of solar panels (total of less than 50w ) i believe, and some batteries, some of which he charges while driving into town in his car.

In Australia we are having a bit of a heatwave in my area, and there have been a few power cuts of a couple of hours or more and you should hear the people moan about it, seriously Aussies (the moaning ones), get a generator/solar whatever and just deal with it, stop depending on the government for something you can do yourself. (key word there, depending, i'm not saying dont use it while its there, just have a backup, short term and long term)

To all you fellow cunts wanting pictures of the his place and info on the power, you just need to reed the entries from the last few month of last year. You will see what was bought were is was bought and how much was paid, if you weed the comments you will see Google image pictures of the place.
Also read the last year or two' posts and you will find some real jewels (amongst repedative economic and peak oil carp that gets repetitive but but it does show he was lucking in first preparing for an economic collapse)

Jim repeats himself enough please don't encourage him to do it more often:)

keep up your writing Jim it is a high lite of my day, and I can see why you must on occasion reiterate some of your principles so that your new readers will get it/understand what you are doing.

And for your new troll, just give him a refund for his subscription and send him on his way the money he pays does not make it worth listing to his crap.

Anon Cunt 12:35 am,
google images won't show shit. I would like to see some up close and personal pics of his hideout(throw in a couple of his dead weight load of a wife too). I doubt there is much to photograph of his "energy production facility" as it is only a step up from my solar panel on my calculator.

Like I said before I don't doubt that he moved but there is little reason for him not to post some pics of the land and trailer. I am sure he is not worried about OSPEC since he already posted his address on the Bison Press webpage.

So what do you say Jimbo, show the world how you are living.

One last thought, how's about letting your readers post more guest articles on the weekends.

I remember a coupla years ago, with rolling blackouts, they mentioned Texas had a good to go grid, as it was very seperated from most of country. But hot - damn hot in fact - during the summer.

Anonymous said...

I just have to say, THANK YOU! Thank you so much for making your personal wherabouts known so that in the event of a catastrophy me and my partners know right where to go, and right where to find a couple years of pre-packaged food and ammo. Thanks for letting me know that all we have to deal with is one guy and his wife in a trailer with nothing but bolt action weapons. "Look under the blue tarp boys, dosnt look like much but dont let that tarp fool you."

When this country goes to shit you better believe lots of people have a idea of where you are and if starving they will come to share in your wealth, wether you like it or not.

If the end is near why not try to enjoy the things like, grid power, cell phones, abundant fuel while they are around? It takes a very small amout of money to become prepared. Aside from that enjoy driving your SUV's and enjoy sitting at home alone with 4 TV's on and the heat on 90 with the windows open. When the shit hits the fan at least you will know how nice things once were, while also being prepared to give it all up if that time arrives. The one who is going to feel cheated is you if somehow the end that you predict never happens. You spent all this time living in poverty because you wanted to prepare for something that MAY or MAY NOT even happen. There are a lot of possible outcomes, dont just pick one and run with it. I still do urge people to prepare, but there is no need to live out of a tin can unless thats your only option.

@ Kip

Has he posted pics of his set-up?

Mr. Dakin has really come under fire since someone commented about him still living in a trailer park and not being off the grid as he mentions.

Elko doesn't seem to be that remote of a place after looking at some links that were posted.

I don't know exacty what Jim has, but I lived quite comfortably for two years with a 55W solar panel, 300W inverter and 105AH deep cycle marine battery. That was on a boat in Key West, so sunshine was abundant and heating a non-issue.
My new setup is 3 - 65W panels, a 1500W inverter, and 315AH "house bank" of deep cycle batteries. This is enough to run a small space heater for a limited time, or a crock pot, microwave, 12v tv, computer, etc. Important system components include a charge controller for healthy battery charging, a voltmeter to monitor energy availability, and battery switch to choose between house bank and starting bank.
The entire system cost around $1,500.00 which in my mind is a great investment to be energy independant.
The Boatowner's Electrical/Technical Manual by Nigel Caulder is an excellent resource for designing a system sized to your needs.

LOL It's "herters" not "herder" Herters#204 is a crow-call you idiot. And he's right about you minion-cunts- you should be more particular who you idolize.

Hey Herters#204, did you actually help jimbo find his survey maps? If so, how about you tell us all exactly where his land is?

Anonymous said...

People if he can't show some real pic of his place, after being asked to do so, then that is proof he is only a fraud that writes words with no real knowledge or action on his part.

The end is near. Few will survive. Human nature is flawed. Preparing is probably useless but is the best alternative we have.

Good luck.

Anon 6:05 am,

you are right about not focusing on one outcome. I think Jimbo is following that model by living the good life (trailer, land, one ancient bolt action rifle, years worth of wheat, job, etc) but when/if TSHTF he will go mobile with his pack wife and even less comfort then he has now.

I am still living in my $195,000 mansion that I owe $210,000 on. I am driving my $8,000 truck that I owe $12,000 on. And my cabin in the woods is being rented out by the rodents until I need her. By the way the rodents haven't paid me a dime since I bought the place, I will have to put a note on the bait trays when I go down there again.

Oh yeah stock up on gas now I don't see it going much lower no matter how low oil goes. I have also heard that winter gas formulations contain more butane for easier starting but that could be a bunch of bs

I'm new to this blog. I find the author funny. Seems like someone I would enjoy shooting the breeze with. What I don't understand is why anyone with superior intellect to the author would waste their time bashing him. If you don't like the dude, move on. Real simple. Otherwise you come off as a self appointed Elliot Ness... an unwanted, unappreciated Ness. You aren't going to change anything. Makes me wonder if people like that camp out and abuse just the one blogger, or maybe they are a blight on multiple blogs.

Most well read blogs seem to have trolls in one form or another, but Bison seems to attract more than the normal share. Maybe it IS the government.
