Cheating again today. A section from my book on life after the collapse. Which is now available, by the way. www.bisonpress.com
DISEASE AND HEALTH CARE
As discussed in the military section, health care will benefit from germ theory but suffer from antibiotic shortages. Simple sanitary practices have been responsible for more lives saved than millions of doctors ( something to keep in mind as you curse health inspectors or the building codes for septic tanks ). Yes, vaccines have played a huge role. But sanitary waste elimination and safe food storage was a huge step forward in quality of life and even longevity. As long as these standards are continued in practice disease and illness will not be the huge killers they once were. That said, no more antibiotics mean certain modern inconveniences turn deadly. No more vaccines will see a return of pandemics. And the lack of public services such as mosquito spraying will reintroduce malaria and such. The last item alone is reason to be leery of living in hot and humid regions. Much to do has been made of air conditioning opening up the South and southwest for colonizing by the swarming hoards of Yankees. But I would think that deep well irrigation and damming the Colorado opened up the lower west, and insecticides allowed the South to be safely inhabited. Air conditioning made them comfortable, but that didn’t allow water to be piped long distances or fetid swamps to become less threatening. The end to cheap energy and centralized control will turn those two areas in to unhealthy homes again.
*
Now, having made the case that sanitary practices prevent diseases and that safe food storage contain illnesses, you also have to keep in mind that certain things are going to happen during and after the collapse. The breakdown of infrastructure means sewer mains leak. Private efforts at waste disposal are ineffective. The accumulation of trash, uncollected, harbors flies and rats. Water is treated badly or not at all. Even intentional contamination of reservoirs might occur ( for instance, as blackmail against a community ). Electricity supply becomes erratic and causes refrigeration malfunctions. And the lost knowledge of old school food preservation does not help matters. And don’t forget famine or at least malnutrition will weaken peoples immune system. So it really does become a crap shoot if disease does get uncontrollable or not.
*
One thing we can count on is a complete breakdown of modern medical care. There are simply not enough facilities to accommodate any significant increase in required care and the extreme cost of education and malpractice insurance make sure that the supply of doctors stays limited. Medical professionals are said to be the next growth industry, but given that over half that field is government funded, and in light of the current financial health of the government itself, any wave of students going mercenary will be short lived. Health care is a luxury for most of the population. Costs have become too high. During a collapse, that will get much worse. Fewer patients will mean higher costs. An aging doctor population and decreasing medical students will see less personnel. Unless a collapse happens very quickly and you will see a lot of latent talent available. But even then, how many doctors could practice without their high tech tools and the pharmaceutical industry? How many could become general practitioners with little or no modern medicine, with only herbs or opiate based pain killers or less than ideal chemicals for operating? Perhaps we have raised the bar in knowledge enough that even with such a setback medical care will still be an improvement over that of a century ago. But as with most transitions being hampered with lack of trade, lack of energy and lack of low tech infrastructure, don’t count on it.

The return to a pre-vaccine/antibiotic era doesn’t necessarily mean we are all going to keel over on the street as soon as someone coughs bloody droplets into the air. It does mean a return to early, random death for some. Decreased life spans for the poor. The return to the norm of death during child birth, of young widows and widowers, of once again treating death as a natural occurrence rather than a thing to be feared and fought with unending treasure. Remember, our present society mimics the wealth of kings of old. The poorest ghetto dweller of today lives better than a king several hundred years ago. Due to oil. Remove the oil and things go back the way they were. Which includes all but the wealthy unable to afford doctors or battling death with money.

Buy your antibiotics now from a animal care supply house or overseas. One bad bacteria infection is all it takes.
There is NO medication to help DEMENTED NH.
Is hopeless, sorry.
From now on Is DEMENTED A.H.
The Russian Argentine.
Most doctors are idiots anyway.
Guys, guys.
You must understand that demented nh, was dropped wheb he was 2 days old when his father found out that he was conceive by his neighbor. When dropped he hit the head sooo hard then he rolled over and fall into the septic tank. That the reason why he is full of $#!t.
This has nothing to do with his brothers and sisters had different fathers.
The town priest.
I had nothing to do with the kid that looks like me.

great, thank you for the compliment. i truly greatly appreciate it, considering the source... peace and have a good day.
there are 2 primary reasons for the amerikan 'life expectancy' increase. first off, infant death mortality which is HIGHEST in america among the industrialized nations is NOT included in the statistics. the rest has nothing to do with dangerous vaccines and new super duper medications...
frankly, it's the network of ambulances and paramedics. now most people get to hospitals and survive accidents, as well as heart attacks and strokes. goodness, even 4 out of 5 shooting victims survive if they get to a hospital within an hour these days.
something to think about if your injured, BTW...
also,in the days of old, an abortion was just taking an unwanted baby and smashing it's head on a rock. ugly, of course, but that's why a significant number of children 'died', not lack of 'modern medicine'.
anyway, as far as i can guess, things sucked in the past: it's just that 'progress' has been greatly exaggerated.
as to 'superbugs' and 'mini-pandemics', they are HERE and NOW.
2 winters ago, here in the North East, there were flu, meningitis, and enchepalitis outbreaks all at the same time. yet, they were barely reported.
seems like samonella outbreaks and product recalls are regular events now... one good reason not to eat processed foods or go to restaurants (it's all about fecal matter in the soup)...
from herbalism the old standby is: goldenseal root, however it's endangered and so pricey.
colodial silver has become rather controversial as of late and has drawn the ire of the FDA. i swear by it. however, despite any claims either way, the chemistry isn't understood. and not patentable therfore not profitable for BIG PHARMA therefore VERBOTTEN for you.

That's strange.
Back in Russia we only use GARLIC and our elderly most get live over 100 years old, Of couse, if they dont get shot.
There are many people hook in antibiotics, they depend on them for the slightiest symptom.
You must let your system work, let your system built some strenght to fight diseases. Dont let it become too dependent in antibiotics.
If you need help Demented, I'll give you a coupon to go see Dr. Kevorkian.
Yours true friend.

P.S.
I hope I improved my typing.
Dr. Shit (for short)
It has been shown that going to a doctor is one of the most dangerous things you can do.
Sure, broken bones and obvious injuries/diseases by all means see a doctor - but 90% of the time the body heals itself - modern medicine has nothing at all to do with it. Ingesting medications (often the WRONG medications) doctors prescribe and undergoing surgery can be more dangerous than the ailment itself. Many diagnosis are mis-diagnosis.
Now many of you who read this will not believe it. That's OK, you are as lost in the system as are most people - but I urge you to do some research on the subject. You will find it is true.
this post immediately brought to mind a possible 'career' for post-SHTF folks... internship with a medical 'professional' as a career development option.
oh! there is something called RUSSIAN penicillin, which is a number of HEADS of Garlic (not cloves) smashed and mixed into vodka.
actually, ruskies have a life expectancy of about 45 years, part of the reason is the cabbage and vodka diet and part of the reason is that after generations of communist education...they actually came to believe that the STATE would protect them all the time. what happens is that a lot of school children stand in the street and get run over by truck and buses. of course, now it's heroin and they OD by the thousands every weekend....
sounds a little too much like the obamaniacs !

"The U.S. has anywhere from 6 million to 12 million cases of head lice each year..."
gee, that's a lot of lice and dirtheads. shouldn't we have a mandatory lice vaccine to protect the children ? isn't that more important than giving those little 13 yo sluts gladisil to protect them from STD's ?
Ron over at survivaltopics, makes a good point about contemporary doctors. first off their greedy bastards and they don't care if they cheat you out of your house or life savings. always tell them your a renter if they ask !
second, they rarely come up with a correct diagnosis. i've heard numerous 1st hand accounts of people suffering for 1 or 2 years till they got a correct diagnosis.
third, they are pill pushers, and usually you'll get a perscription for whatever drug that week has the highest referal fee. ie 'kickback'.
years ago, the advice was, you really ought to go see somebody who went to a real medical school for a diagnostic. today if it's anything more than a hangnail you better plan on getting a second opinion... and even better, learn to take care of yourself as much as possible...
one thing i've learned is that most onlookers at an accident can't even say 'yes' or 'no', much less pick up a phone and call till the 3rd time there yelled at, much less do something useful like fetch some water or a towel/bandage/shirt....

A country that is well fed is more likely to be healthy even if it doesn't have an army of surgeons. Malnourishment and disease go hand and hand. Doctors should be used with caution as truly, they are too often out to make money rather than heal you. Self care, by not smoking, not drinking, not using drugs for recreation, eating right, getting enough sleep, and exercising and generally not putting yourself into dangerous situations goes a long towards good health. Also, no matter what your past, it's a good idea to develop a love of life and of your self. Too many people live in bitterness about the past, something no one can do anything about.
so lemon juice, garlic and other likely natural/homeopathic remedies would be handy to know then huh?
To 11:21 PM
Personally, I am not wild about homeopathy, home remedies, chiropractors, and other alternative medical procedures.
However, I do believe that sometimes, alternative medicine, although it may not do much good, is far better than an uneccessary medical procedure based on a bad diagnosis. Many physicians sometimes forget the old medical adage, "the first thing is to do no harm".
Let us know when this comes in printed format or CD version - I wouldn't mind paying a little extra to have it that way. Don't do paypal or credit cards - never had one in my life, as a matter of fact.
It looks to be a good read - thanks for the preview.
The flip side is that the weak will die in infancy, those that remain will be stronger. In some Civil War movies props have to be made out of styrofoam painted black to resemble iron, because modern actors can't lift as much weight as people lifted back then.
@ Anon 5:24pm
Pre-paid credit cards, you can pay cash and pick them up at drug stores and whatnot, use a refillable one for paypal.
