GUEST ARTICLE
Riddle Me This, Riddle Me That
What does Virginia Tech, A dead Preacher, Pres Obommy and the democrats all have in common. Survey Says. Gun Ban. These events and people are all going to contribute to the reinstatement of an Assault Weapons Gun Ban. Let's not forget that Hi Cap handgun magazines will be included in this mix of dirty evil weapons that have no use but in the hands of government authorities. Now I was trying to refrain from sending in this kind of junk to Jim for guest article consideration since the topic has already been beat like a dead horse but I wanted to tell you about my latest firearm purchase and I needed a segue. Just as important is the fact that the AWB is on our door step and I do not want anybody to miss out.
A little background on my weapon cache and firearm experience or lack there of. I made my first firearm purchase in 2007. It was a Savage bolt action 30-06 with scope. It was a Bi-Mart special and I paid about $320 for it. Middle of the road rifle but pretty accurate. I wanted an all around hunting rifle and it seemed to fit the bill. Prior to firing this gun the only other firearm I ever shot was a .22LR rifle. I bought some Remington 180 grain Core-Lokt and some greek surplus ammo. Both rounds shot great out of that rifle. I am left eye dominant and the rifle was a right hand model so I would reach over the top of the gun to work the bolt. No big deal but a little awkward.
My second purchase was a Taurus Tracker 44 magnum 5 shot revolver. I thought this would be the only way to stop an angry bear while I was out and about in the woods. Pretty good kick from that one. Paid about $400 for that piece.Third up was the tried and true Remington 870 shotgun with 28 inch barrel. This was another Bi-mart special at around $300. I followed up those purchases with a couple of 22LR rifles, a Savage bolt action and the other a Remington 597. These were going to be my rabbit killers and I paid less than $300 for both, cheap scopes included.
I decided at some point last year that I needed a larger caliber cheap semi auto rifle that would be somewhat affordable to shoot. I ended up with a Saiga 7.62x39. I found a new one locally for $309 and it included one factory 10 round plastic magazine and one 30 round metal AK47 magazine modified by Surefire. Lastly I just purchased a Smith and Wesson M&P 40, more about this purchase later. Now for those who have read my previous comments and guest articles you are probably thinking that I am an idiot, "you could have bought two tons of wheat in buckets with all that dough". I am sympathetic to that criticism and you are mostly right.
To be fair though my initial gun purchases were geared towards my ambition to start hunting. Events changed and now I am facing the possibility of Divorce and Bankruptcy. In recent guest articles I described some of the BK exemptions in my home state of Oregon. I think I failed to mention the firearm exemptions so here is the legal code for Oregon: " 18.362 Exemption for firearms. Every citizen of this state above the age of 16 years shall be entitled to have, hold and keep, for the own use and defense of the citizen and shall have exempt from execution one rifle or shotgun and one pistol. The combined value of all firearms claimed as exempt under this section may not exceed $1,000.
"It is not 100% clear to me whether the $1000 exemption limit is per person or per BK filing. Regardless in my case my children are both under 16 years of age and would not qualify for the exemption. And even if my wife and I filed the BK jointly she would not want anything to do with possessing any firearms so I will be whittling down my collection to two weapons one rifle and one handgun. I am going to sell the remaining weapons to friends and family and use the proceeds to buy a water tank for the cabin. This is were the recent fervor around the gun ban comes in to play. I know that even if the gun ban is enacted that I can still purchase a pump shotgun, a bolt action rifle and revolvers at close to pre-ban prices. This led me to the decision to purchase the M&P 40 handgun and the decision to keep the Saiga rifle. These guns and/or the hi cap magazines they use will likely jump dramatically in price after a ban. Also these two guns have a total value of less than $1000, so I should be go to go as far as the BK trustee is concerned.
Now about my new pride and joy the M&P .40 caliber handgun. I read a lot of positive reviews on this gun prior to going to the store. I ended up trading in the 30-06 Savage plus cash to purchase this gun. It is really a nice looking gun and feels very good in hand. The magazines hold 15 rounds and S&W has a deal for two extra mags with an M&P gun purchase through April. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet but the boys and I are heading to the cabin later this month and hopefully I can pop off a few rounds at the gravel quarry. A nice bonus feature about this gun is that I found a company selling a drop in 9mm conversion barrel for $100 bucks. I will need to pick up some 9mm magazines which hold 17 rounds for this gun and I will be able to shoot either the .40 S&W or the 9mm rounds by changing out the barrel and switching magazines. I think the .40 cal round has the ballistic edge but the 9mm is a little cheaper and might be easier to find in bulk or surplus lots.
The moral of the story is to get your hi cap magazines and dirty evil weapons now before the prices go any higher. Here are links to the Assault Weapons bills that I am aware of. There is also a bill that has some ridiculous registration requirements for certain firearms. Watch for these bills to advance. And remember now that Pres. Obommy has got his wish for embryo farming to be funded by the goverment out of the way he will have plenty of free time to sign any gun ban bills that come across his desk. This Assault Weapons bill is actually being introduced by some self proclaimed

Thank You for your thoughts.
Will it take an uprising to resestablish the Constitutional Republic?
It is time don't you think.
Not only would we rid ourselfs of "them" but we could get that freakin troll in its basement while it is jackin off to a muscle magazine.
it's not that i have anything against guns or gun collectors.
actually, when starting out a collection, it's typical and an expensive experience; having to sell or trade up certain guns that you bought for the sake of buying. it happens to everyone.
i will be mildly critical that you when hog wild just before some serious disruptions in your life... well, hiding assets from the creditors, ha! more power to ya !
but, your plans might backfire, if the wifey goes postal during the potential ex-wifey 'bust your balls' dance on your face.
first comes the 'restraining order' because you hurt her feelings and called her a 'fat bitch'... yeap! the judge signs the restraining order, because of 'threatening behavior'. and you have to turn your guns over to the police or sell them to a gun store (at half of what you paid, or less)... happens all the time.
then comes, kiss everything else goodbye including the kids. and don't forget the mandatory child support payments...
oh, yes, and the bench warrant goes out everytime the check is a day late....
go out and get busted for drug dealing or shoplifting, running some scams, and you'll be back out on the streets in no time. but, make the STATE pay for your children and you'll be facing 6 months to a year in lock up...
hope for the best, prepare for the worse....
If an uprising is what it is going to take, we had better do it soon. Otherwise we will be armed with slingshots and bb guns.
Don't know if anyone commented on this yet, but have y'all noticed spell check says to change "Obama"? One of the suggestions is to change him to Burma. Yes, change we can believe in!
Sounds like you have a good combination of weapons. Nows it's time for food and a retreat.
Good luck with your divorce, it won't be fun and the kids never understand. Been there done it.
No, the kids never understand. They're just hurt and bewildered. It blew me to hell when my parents did it to me and I vowed to never do it to my kids. I don't know anyone else's situation, so I'm not condemning you, just telling you that whatever justifications and rationalizations you work out... they don't hold water.
-Humongous
To the author : imo your vision is flawed.
It's not about getting semi autos because the AWB is coming.
It's about getting the right tools for your survival.
So this means several things :
- you need to be able to protect yourself with the guns. In this respect your guns are fine.
- you need to be able to hunt with the long one and I don't think a Saiga is adequate for the job, you'd better keep the 30.06
- no paper trail. Even a single shot might be banned one day, so you don't want them to know what you own.
My 2 cents ...
anon 1:50AM has got it right.
Get rid of the Saiga and keep the 30-06 and the .40. Both use easily obtainable ammo and the 06 is non threatening to "Authorities" as it is a common hunting rifle. You want guns that will be usefull after TSHTF. I would add a pump shotgun to the mix since you can have three.
If things get real bad the 30-06 can be used to, ahem....increase your arsenal. Learn how to use it and practice regularly. Stealth, accuracy and patience will be more important than launching massive amounts of lead.
Chechen rebels killed a lot of Russians with subsonic ammo 22LR.

My 16 yo grandson puts three Aguila 60 gr SSS in 3/8" at fifty yards with 10/22 with aftermarket E Arthur Brown 1:9 twist barrel.
I put three Remington 38 gr subsonic in 3/4" at fifty yards
with Marlin model 25 bolt action 1:16 twist barrel. My Marlin shoots Aguila SSS in pie plate groups at fifty yards.
I appreciate the advice but I think there is some misunderstandings about my firearm choices. The important point I need to make clear is that bankruptcy may be in my near future. If this happens I will only be allowed to keep one long gun and one short gun.
Let me clarify my reasons for keeping the Saiga 7.62x39 and the .40 cal semi-auto handgun.
The Saiga is marketed as a sporter/hunting rifle. Yes the action is AK47 but the furniture as sold is conventional hunting rifle style and not intimidating. I currently have a sealed tin of 700 rounds of 124 grain soft point rounds and a dozen or so boxes of fmj rounds to practice with. I have some 154 grain soft points on order and those rounds should be capable of bringing down a mule deer which is about the only big game around the cabin property. The Saiga will not have the range or be as accurate as the 30-06 bolt rifle but follow up shots will be much quicker. The rounds are cheaper as well, so I can practice a lot more with 7.62 rounds versus 30-06 rounds. If I thought I was going to be a wannabe sniper then maybe I would have kept the Savage bolt rifle but if the targets are 200 or 300 yards away then I will probably be retreating and not trying to pick somebody off at that range. The land around around the cabin is so densely covered with trees that most hunting shots will be under a 100 yards.
7.62x39 rounds coming out of the barrels of AK47 style rifles have extinguished plenty of lives so I don't doubt the effectiveness of the round. My Saiga will be modified to comply with 922r regulations so I can utilize American made hi cap magazines which will no longer be made after either of the proposed gun bans as currently written. This rifle and hi cap magazines to fit it will increase significantly in value after a ban so I can also think of it as a sort of investment.
The same investment story goes for the M&P .40 cal handgun and hi cap magazines. This weapon will be easier to shoot compared to the Taurus 44 magnum. The .40 won't have the range or the same knock down power as the magnum but it holds 15 rounds in the magazine versus the 5 rounds that the Taurus revolver holds. Ammo will be cheaper plus I have the 9mm barrel option for an even cheaper alternative to practice with.
I would really like to keep the shotgun but I can always get another one after the bankruptcy. Same goes for the bolt rifles. Those guns should be ignored by the gun ban.
And to vlad,
I like the 22 rifles also but I would not want to depend on one in a gun fight. The current gun ban proposals exempt 22LR rifles including hi cap magazines for them as I understand it. I would like to keep a bolt 22LR for my boys to train with when they get a little older but we will see.
Thanks all.
"Will it take an uprising to resestablish the Constitutional Republic"
it would'nt be an uprising, but rather, simply us enforcing the constitution
"The current gun ban proposals exempt 22LR rifles including hi cap magazines for them as I understand it..."
that's odd, those .22 semiauto rifles are a recurring theme in fatal domestic disturbances....
well, i suppose we all watched those spaghetti westerns as kids, but your very unlikely to get in a gun battle. few criminals actually learn how to shoot and most prefer subterfuge.
Anon 1:38 pm,
I hope your right about my chances of getting in to a gun battle, but I don't share your optimism. In a SHTF scenario you will probably not be dealing with your typical perps. Any body that ventures out in to my neck of the woods will likely have company and will probably be well armed to boot.
Here are the 22LR references from the proposed bills:
Dems bill: (ii) Clause (i) shall not apply to an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.
Repubs bill: (B) does not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.’.
Another thing I noticed after reading over the proposed bills again is that the Dems bill mentions the Saiga brand by name but the Repubs bill does not. Although either bill will eliminate the hi cap optioned guns
