BEST SAUCE
Before I forget, tomorrow will be yet another guest article from our long suffering northern correspondent. Not only does he not get paid, he must put up with your abuse. Kind of like marriage, real trauma in exchange for perceived benefits. Anyone else wish to get such a wonderful deal, write to me at jimd303@netzero.com .

I put the following quote the other day, but no one rose to my challenge. Okay, you were actively ignoring me, so I decided to make it the subject of today's article.

Hunger is the best sauce in the world. [Sp., La mejor salsa del mundo es la hambre.] Author: Cervantes (Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra)Source: Don Quixote
*
Eat what you store, store what you eat, don't introduce unfamiliar food in times of stress, yada, yada. We know all that. However, certain minions have argued with me that a diet of nothing more than grain and beans are a bad idea. Now, let's forget for a moment that they were obviously under the seductive force of the dark side, Yuppie Survivalism. Yes, you are lured into their grasp with visions of semi-automatic weapons and unlimited amounts of ammunition ( for the record, I would like to state that I think Rawles "ammo supply back to normal soon" is wrong. Declining energy supplies. If I'm wrong, other than short term blips, kindly remember this and I will gladly eat crow ) and warehouses full of MRE's and screaming into battle on SUV's and whatnot. But once you sign on the dotted line, there is no escape. You will be doomed to die in one last gasp of middle class consumption. Let's not even talk about how much cheaper and nutritious that is compared to freeze dried slop. Let's just focus on taste fatigue.

If you are familiar with whole grains and beans in your diet now, the transition to eating them exclusively after the apocalypse will not be impossible. Oh, you'll wish you were eating anything else. You'll crave dead animal flesh. The can of Spam that you wouldn't feed your neighbors rabid noisy dog will start to look good. But, with the protein compliment and sprouting some of the wheat, it will be enough to keep you alive and healthy. And I don't think that you will be tempted to eat less than needed because you are sick of the taste. As the above quote says, if you are hungry enough, you will eat it and like it. Written back in the day when famine and a very monotonous diet were the norm, so I think we can take the quote at face value and dismiss the thoughts of someone whose idea of hunger is to miss one meal ( I'm not picking on anyone specially, this attitude is shared by almost all Americans ).
*
I love meat. I love meat so much I won't mind hunting and eating vegetarians after the apocalypse. If I could afford to get half my calories from meat every day I would. I don't store wheat, corn and beans because I love bread. Okay, I love bread. But I don't store them because that is all I want to eat. I store them because they are extremely cheap. Even after the doubling of grain prices because of that limp wristed commie puke Baby Bush sold his pathetic soul to the Mega-Ag Corp Of America to push ( sub par ) fuel from food programs. You simply can't provide a lot of food for that many people if you are on a severe budget otherwise. It will help you survive. Not survive in style, but it will be close enough for government work. You won't die on that diet, and it is far better to have twice as much food to eat than a quarter of that amount even if it tastes better.

Good post, Jim, except "I" happen to believe that animal protein and fats are essential to health. The only compromise I can come up for long term food storage is dried (powdered) eggs. The dried eggs cost about $15/#10 can (2 1/2 pounds) which is the equivalent of 80 to 90 eggs. They last for 5 to 10 years or more (I have been eating some recently which I have stored for 8 years). It's pretty easy to find sources by googling "dried eggs". The eggs are not only useful for "needed" animal protein and fat but also as means to give corn bread and regular wheat bread more body(less crumbly) and more nutrition. Bread from hand ground wheat and corn flour do not stick together as well as finely ground store bought flour. Plus, dried eggs can give some much needed variation in the diet as more dishes are possible.
I think the need for animal fat and protein is an ongoing struggle in the Prepping world. I myself, like the Spam and canned meat options pretty well. But I like the powdered eggs just as well, so I guess that I am more fortunate than some!
As with most foods, I figure that if it has enough salt and pepper (and hot sauce) then it goes down pretty easy!
If all hell breaks loose I think animal protein will be available. For a while dogs let loose by there owners will be plentiful. Providing you can hunt or trap them and they don"t hunt you first. In survival situations you need to take advantage of any source of food that can supplement your preps..

"certain minions have argued with me that a diet of nothing more than grain and beans are a bad idea."
I was born in East Texas 1932. We were pleased to eat boiled pinto beans and buttered cornbread. We lived next door to poor people. I could see that I would not enjoy poverty.

You touched on the big Ag-Corps and what they have at stake in all this.
For those of you not giving a Damn about California (I don't blame you 95% of the time) are You aware that the Federal Givermint has shut down water to the small farmers in Central CA.?
They say it is to save a little fish called the Smelt up near the Sangayfrisco delta. So supposedly all the water is flowing out to the Pacific ocean to save this "fish".
I have driven CA. Interstate 5 North to South and back and the area, except for (Ta DAA!) the large Ag-Corp farms, is turning into a real life Dust Bowl!
The small farmer is being shut down! This area, until about 5 years ago when this shutdown began produced 50% of the USofA's food produce.
Is the AG-Corp's so powerful that they can starve us out and then buy up all the land and make CA 1 large AG-Corp?
What say you when they get the land and suddenly the water starts flowing again?
That perhaps the Givermint will be able to ration and control the food flow to us?
Just something to ponder as Big Brother seeks even more of control over your life.
Think about this and Have a Nice Day.
"Vegetarians taste better"
Lets not overlook bugs and reptiles as protein supplements if you can't catch the dogs.
Hunger is indeed the best sauce.
But I plan to grow some rosemary and thyme, all the same.
Been buying bulk spices (esp. the tropicals; pepper, cinnamon, turmeric) sometimes they're cheap @ the dollar store too.

Carnivores identify prey by scent. Might that account for attacks on hikers by wild critters?
In many areas we are lucky enough to have much available
small game to augment beans, corn and rice
Ten people working in teams of two could harvest and dry
most of it for future use.

Q34: Our resort serves game meats. Do you have nutrition information for rattlesnake?
A: Rattlesnake is not in the USDA nutrient database, but the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Georgia has forwarded us the following data "supposedly from the Pacific Island Food Composition table... for 3.5 oz. raw rattlesnake: 92 calories, 18 g protein, 2 g fat, 1 g carbohydrate, 0 fiber, 0 calcium." As a percentage of total calories, this meat is about 72% protein and 20% fat.
That makes sense, Vlad. I never really thought about it before but I'm glad I smell like a predator.
