nitrates

NITRATES
One of the unintended consequences of living the life of Riley through the Oil Age is that your perceptions of reality are altered in such a way that you are blinded from reality and live full time in Fantasyland. Almost everything that you think about has been altered by an abundance of energy. That was an unnatural state of affairs that is in the process of unwinding. As I never tire of telling you, one bit of reality that you ignore at your own peril is the abundance of ammunition. Ammunition is as plentiful or as scarce as the energy supply. If we are headed towards a future of less energy, the supply of ammunition will reflect that. After your stockpiled ammunition is gone, it is game over. Oh, we will have the knowledge to manufacture smokeless powder. It is still the same as black powder, less charcoal and created differently chemically. The know how is not the problem. The problem is that we won’t have carbon fuels as feed stocks to produce chemicals on an industrial scale anymore.
*
Historically, those nations that controlled an extra source of nitrates had the military advantage. Everyone was forcing farms to set aside manure for nitrate beds. That of course brought up problems with adequate crop fertilizer, but the same process that gave you extra nitrates also got you extra crops. Namely, colonization. Europe got crowded enough that defeating your neighbors wasn’t enough to survive ( stealing their resources ). That created the pressure needed to create the process of overseas conquest. You killed off the natives with smallpox and other barnyard flu’s and mined the land of nutrients to feed the folks back home. And those that conquered an island inhabited by birds for centuries had a military advantage. A concentrated source of nitrates to be used in the manufacture of gunpowder.
*
So naturally the question for your brave new world after the apocalypse is, do you have a concentrated source of nitrates? If you don’t, forget about being strong enough to preserve your freedoms. Or being strong enough to steal what you need to survive. Logistics are far more important than strategy or tactics. Logistics should lead them both. You need a source of fuel to make your gunpowder. It is a whole other problem as far as smokeless powder or black powder, primer material and the clash between two armies with differing levels of technology. Without that basic stockpile to supply an army with anything other than bladed weapons, you must have an excess of nitrates. More than you need to farm with. What you need to supply an army with. If you don’t, consider the advisability of conquering a nearby supply immediately. Before the average idiot realized that his stockpile of .223 won’t last forever of semi-auto mode. Use modern ammunition to conquer and hold your future, less modern ammunition supply. And get over old fashion notions of peacefully living alongside other tribes. You need to be aggressive and attack to get what you need for future survival.

I think as individuals (most preppers) we probably all have more ammo than is actually necessary for defense and conflict. At a few rounds per engagement the odds you will live through enough fights to run out of ammo if you have even a few hundred rounds are minimal. However since what you have could be all you ever get it is wise to stock plenty.

I wasn't really thinking along the lines of personal defense. For that, a semi w/5k and a bolt w/1k would be great. Enough for a lifetime with careful husbandry. My thoughts in this article were more along the lines of tribal and regional conflict. For that, an arms industry is essential. Personal stockpiles wouldn't be enough.

In comments section this thread, please see video of Lee Loader, and information on economical cast bullet reloads.

180 gr cast bullet @ 1500 fps kills them as dead as they can get.

well, the answer is simple... more cannon fodder. the british empire relied on their gurkah's, and the generous us government is offering citizenship to young mexican's for a tour of duty and a couple of years in pipelinestan....

run out of bullets ? give 'em spears and machetes....

of course, NO JOBS for young kids except maybe a shot at a combat job, is practically a draft that isn't a draft. sadly, 2/3's of american kids are too infirm: overweight, asthmatic, tweaked out on pharmacuticals, advanced heart disease, or pre-diabetic....

wasn't it that fat drunken russkie, Kruschev who said: "americans will get too fat and lazy some day to tie their shoes... we will bury america !!!!"

James, Good point. For any sort of a long term engagement or conflict an arms industry would be essential. Even for a tribe/ group lucky enough to acquire the contents of a government munitions storage facility they would eventually need to start producing their own.

I shouldn't say a word, I know, but I can't resist a warning. No point in screaming or abuse, because I won't be paying attention.

If you're smart, you'll be ready to get out of Dodge and away from people like these if you're not exactly like them or considered one of them.

If it isn't obvious to you yet, these armed, aggressive, and itchin'-to-attack folks are the ones to beware. They will be the ones doing the raids, killing, and looting. They aren't obsessed with guns and ammo for nothing. They want to kill. They consider themselves entitled and superior to others. They will freely murder, probably even for fun.

If you live anywhere near right wingers, survivalists or other folks of that stripe, it would be wise to be ready to flee on short notice.

Hopefully, those in other countries will drop a bomb or several on their heads and wipe them out from the earth (after all, the brownshirts are nothing but a memory nowadays), so get far away. We are overdue for an armed conflict on this soil. Many murdered souls cry out for it.

Just get away from them.

They are too numerous in this country to fight and too dimwitted to reason with.

Regarding Admin's comment: I do have to admit that I am perplexed, at times, by the fact that many "survivalists" or prepper-types don't put more energy into developing a sense of community. Their knowledge and abilities should really be used for the good of the community, if possible. Think of the original colonists and their militias. Why wouldn't larger groups than the prepper family or "tribe" be able to get together to defend themselves?
I have no doubt that the level of organization of society will devolve from the Federal level to the state and local levels, but that doesn't mean that human society will lose all ability to organize for its welfare, does it?
