why not rent?

WHY NOT RENT?
I was pondering what juicy items to include today in my Amazon links ( which, by the way, I am now officially notifying you that I’ve switched from a coupon to cash for my commission. When you buy an Amazon product from my links I see about 6% as a commission. I used to use that solely for book purchases but now I’m going to spend a bit on myself plus the normal reference books. I hope you still love me ) and just decided to go off topic. According to the fiction book “1612 “, really cool martial music to use in freaking out the enemy is Shostakovich Symphony #8. If you really want to take a lot more time you can depress them with Pink Floyd ( my favorite poison ).
*
Over yonder at http://tslrf.blogspot.com/ there arose with a clamor an article, Prepper Myth Busters: Dropping Out To Your Land. Now, I love the Three Amigos survival site. But in truth we disagree on a lot of things. I won’t come right out and say they are always wrong, being the holiday season and all. Okay, I actually think we have a bit of fun just disagreeing and giving each other a hard time. So I swear they wrote that article just to mess with me. But I easily arise to such bait. In essence ( but please do read the whole thing yourself ) it states that rent only comprises a third of your expenses so you can’t really gain all that much independence by moving to a junk lot in a trailer. WOW! Written in true Yuppie opulence and denial. I get the point they are trying to make, but it ignores the basic assumption that junk land and a trailer are not the only things you are going to do to lessen the golden handcuffs that bind us. A pair of handcuffs most of us willingly put on ourselves. But here at the world headquarters of the Bison Brigade ( situated in a secret underground lair and guarded by sharks with laser beams on their heads ), off grid tin shack living is just the beginning of the Officially Approved Semi-Retirement Plan. None of us under fifty ( heck, perhaps not even under sixty the way things are going ) are going to see Social Security, so there won’t be much of a retirement. The best we are going to do, if we are lucky and we can’t get approval to start ambushing California refugees and put them in stew pots ( and I don’t know if I can cede all lands south of Hawthorn, Oldsubotai, but we can talk further ), is to work until we die without medical coverage. But to do that you need to drastically reduce your needs so you can work part time.
*
Unless the ass totally falls out of society, then yes, you will need to continually work and bring in some cash. But does that mean you really need a motor vehicle? A cell phone? Cable TV? Starbucks? You can live a heck of a lot cheaper by doing without a lot of unnecessary luxuries. I get that it is hard, the wife won’t do it, blah, blah. I also get that the friggin oil is starting to run out and sooner or later ( being unable to time it, I can’t say positively to panic right now, but I’m going for a decade early rather than a minute late ) all this luxury and normal modern living is leaving us anyway. Which includes the job to pay the rent. Tin box/junk land is a solution to multiple problems. It allows for cheap living now so more cash is available for preps. It allows you to avoid being homeless once the job is gone. It allows you to have a tiny version of modern living, like electricity, independent of the grid. It allows you to survive if your money supply shrinks. It helps you stay out of debt and on the margins of the rat race. It isn’t about replacing income, but about giving you the options you need in emergencies.
*
And you can save most of your income by living this way. If you are lower income. Sure, high incomes don’t feel the pain of rent, much. But on the minimum wage scale, you are saving at least half by not paying rent. Even if you keep a car, your living expenses can go from a thousand a month ( and that is living in a trailer park or as a roommate, not paying for an apartment yourself ) to five hundred. With no sacrifice other than a smaller dwelling and limited electricity. All other expenditures stay the same. A few more sacrifices and you can live easily on $300. That’s what it cost me to live, minus the land payments and car expenses. Cheap land is part of being frugal, not the exclusive answer. You have to do your part in other areas. But if you do, you can live on almost nothing. And when the economy crashes, you can safely stay in place as your former workmates scamper about for a highway underpass to park under.
END

Renters forget that owners have relatives they are fond of. In the last great slow down (1992) we rented a drafty old farmhouse in northern Illinois - the Bison compound is luxuriously warm compared to that place. Nothing like camping around the Warm Morning Heater deep in January kwim? Farmer comes along and says he's sorry but relative is out of work and has been for awhile and needs....blah blah...want you to move in 30 days. Nice thing to say to a very pregnant woman camping with the family on the frontroom floor for the past month. Now we live in Arkansas on paid for property. We may camp out on the floor but we won't be moving out for anyone's unemployed relative.

If any one wants the facts, with supporting documentation on our new Health Plan. See her page:

Betsy McCaughey, Ph.D.
http://betsymccaughey.org/

I'm asking myself is this all really happening?

Is this a definitive socialist take over?

Weather you rent or buy it is wise to become as independent as possible.

When people realize the expense of this plan and correlation of loss of rights and freedom to allow there enforcement of fees, This country could erupt!

The fuel prices a year ago nearly brought us to collapse. That expense is nothing compared to this Health Plan!

We all can afford a piece of land we can go to thanks to a forum I put up and, of course, the inspiration from Mayberry at the KiSS blog. Yuppie Rawles preppers just don't get it. Us po' folk can leave the rat race and live simply...and happily. Sometimes we need to share resources and land, but we can still do it. Go to www.paywithammo.com/forum/

Early this morning, the Senate made history and health reform cleared its most important hurdle yet -- garnering the 60 votes needed to move toward a final vote in that chamber later this week.

This marks the first time in our nation's history that comprehensive health reform has come to this point. And it appears that the American people will soon realize the genuine reform that offers security to those who have health insurance and affordable options to those who do not.

I'm grateful to Senator Harry Reid and every senator who's been working around the clock to make this happen. And I'm grateful to you, and every member of the Organizing for America community, for all the work you have done to make this progress possible.

After a nearly century-long struggle, we are now on the cusp of making health insurance reform a reality in the United States of America.

As with any legislation, compromise is part of the process. But I'm pleased that recently added provisions have made this landmark bill even stronger. Between the time when the bill passes and the time when the insurance exchanges get up and running, insurance companies that try to jack up their rates do so at their own peril. Those who hike their prices may be barred from selling plans on the exchanges.

And while insurance companies will be prevented from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions once the exchanges are open, in the meantime there will be a high-risk pool where people with pre-existing conditions can purchase affordable coverage.

A recent amendment has made these protections even stronger. Insurance companies will now be prohibited from denying coverage to children immediately after this bill passes. There's also explicit language in this bill that will protect a patient's choice of doctor. And small businesses will get additional assistance as well.

These protections are in addition to the ones we've been talking about for some time. No longer will insurance companies be able to drop your coverage if you become sick and no longer will you have to pay unlimited amounts out of your own pocket for treatments that you need.

Under this bill families will save on their premiums; businesses that would see their costs rise if we don't act will save money now and in the future. This bill will strengthen Medicare and extend the life of the program. Because it's paid for and gets rid of waste and inefficiency in our health care system, this will be the largest deficit reduction plan in over a decade.

Finally, this reform will extend coverage to more than 30 million Americans who don't have it.

These are not small changes. These are big changes. They're fundamental reforms. They will save money. They will save lives.

And your passion, your work, your organizing helped make all of this possible. Now it's time to finish the job.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

I do have a lot of fun with the back and forth. My statement about the 25-33% was because that is what the smart money people say your rent/ mortgage should be. However for lower income folks your figure of 40-50% is probably sound. I didn't say you CAN'T gain more than that by going off grid, just that you don't automatically. I do agree someone can go a lot lower than that by cutting food/ entertainment/ cell phone/ etc. They can do that and still stay on grid or they can go off grid and not do that. My point was more that moving off grid isn't a cure all or an automatic fix.

I just think too many folks fail to realize that they are going to need some continual income. Anyway thanks for the interesting points and discussion.

Merry Christmas

Anon. 8.16,
Why is your profile blocked?

I know who you are, You are a skitzo/physco. Your name is: Admin, wildflower and Q...... why do you need 3 profiles and now a fourth? If you speak the truth
Why not stand tall and be counted.(your writing style is your fingerprint)

You lurk in the shadows to spread government propaganda.

Let me introduce you: you are an RN you work for the state of CA, in social services. You were on welfare with your kids for ten years, You went to school on the Clinton welfare to work program. The American people paid to support you and payed for your higher education, now you make over 90k a year, your wage is payed by taxes. your education and living expenses were free to you.The program does not require you to pay us back for your school or welfare.

In other words now you make the big bucks, The Americans that put you there can Kiss your ass. We still get to pay for you, to sit your ass behind a desk.

The Senators you thanked are excluded from this great program. They are keeping there own insurance program. Why?

The current estimates are any one making over 10k and under 50k will have to pay 2k out of pocket after subsidies per year.

Given the fact that gov. programs always are Higher than estimated the program will costs 10 times more at the very least.

Fact is this will likely costs every common working folk, near half there take home pay, every year.

Currently Medicare charges tax payers 100.00 for every 25.00 spent on medical services. In other words 75% goes to gov. administration costs, Leaving 25% for the patient medical care.

I do not support insurance companies. This is not the way to correct that problem.

Gov. Health Care is about control not health.
