ENFIELD MINIONS

God bless all Lee-Enfield users, and curse all you bastards using any other type of unworthy firearm. And curse all those who don’t curse those who don’t use a Smelly. Rawles has yet again earned a reprieve, as I have temporarily suspended my death squad sent to eliminate him, since he published a pro Enfield article. That said, it was not without fault. First off, I have never come across a problem buying 303 British, so I see no need to get the .308 Ishapore Enfield. The price for both rounds are about the same, there is no surplus available for either. The Indian gun uses the No.1 which has crappy sites ( although a better bayonet ). The No.4 ( the WWII type ) has much better iron sites. Leaf and post compared to peep. 303 Brit might be a bit underpowered compared to the 308, but I don’t think it is enough to get ones panties in a bunch. Plus, as everyone is desperately scrambling for 308 fodder, the boxes of Her Majesties ammo will be untouched.

*

And another thing! What was that about the problem with mounting a scope? The Enfield is the easiest surplus rifle to scope. The Russian and Mauser require replacing the bolt and getting a gunsmith to install or getting a pistol scope installed half way down the stock at the rear site which sits ahead of the bolt. The Enfield mount by B-Square simply replaces the rear site which is behind the bolt. At least on the No.4. I can’t remember about the No.1. Another reason to not use the Ishapore. Although it is better than no Enfield at all. A very good article, with the above reservations. Long live the Queens Own Rifle! God bless her, and curse those Czarist bastards and the Kaiser.

Some day I will probably own one. I like the MK III and IV models better also.

There was no SMLE Mark IV. There was a Mark No. 1 Mark VI, which became the No. 4 Mark 1.

Not to be particular, but when it comes to the venerable Lee-Enfield series, I'm particular.

Having the No. 4 Mk. 1 called the Mark IV drives me nuts.

And of course, the Lithgow No. 1 Mk. III is the queen of the SMLEs, while the Long Branch (in birch) is the queen of the No. 4s.

As for bayonets, sure, the No. 1 Mk. III bayonet is head and shoulders above the No. 4 bayonet. That's why you need to pick up the No. 9 bayonet for your No. 4. I got one from Sportsman's Guide (I ordered the No. 4 bayonet, and they sent the No. 9. No problem.) Its design helps balance it out.

What do you think of bolt-action 22s?

When you just have to go you'll
need these. (Very easy to install tire chains).

Mr. Dakin,

Thank you very much for the unanticipated pleasure of a weekend installment. You are among the ranks of the mighty, right up there with nova and Creekmore.

However, you do have much nicer hair, and that counts for a lot. I think we should set up a dedicated fund for your hair. I have made the first installment.

Sincerely, Zap

I love bolt 22LR rifles.
My Marlin 25 has 1:16 twist barrel. At 50 yards I shoot 3/4" group with Remington subsonic. They are very little louder than a CCI 22CB Long.

Mel Tappan "Survival Guns" p 177
quote At a distance of 8 feet from the muzzle of my 24" Anschutz, the sound level from firing was only 9 db, and at 15 feet it is was totally inaudible. Not only does this lack of noise make the CCI Long CB caps desireable for indoor or backyard practice, it makes them virtually a necessity for survival use should you ever need to so some shooting without attracting attention or alarming game in the neighborhood. unquote

A 22 is probably the most versatile, for survival. You can get rifles and handguns cheap. The inexpensive ammo makes it easy to stock-up.

I think 22 handguns and rifles would be indispensable in a survival situation.

I love my Ruger 10/22. cheap and accurate.

A well placed 22 shot will kill most things, people and animals.

For that mater a couple of good pellet rifles could be handy.

By the way, Mell Tappan, Had the best survival strategy: Marry a Rich woman.

His wife was heiress to Mack trucks.
Now Freightliner owns Mack. But what could that have to do with survival?

Funny quote.

(on a small plane, one engine is failing)

Passenger says to Ron: if the engine fails, how far will the other one take us?

Ron answers: all the way to the scene of the CRASH!

Lord Bison,
The last few weeks of posts have been great. Injoy some rest. Sat. & Sun posts are a big +.

I see an Enfield or two in my life.

Say what you will but I still think Social Security is owed me as I paid in all my life. If the 545 criminals in power take it away before taking welfare away I will be one pissed off armed old man.

Alex, there is absolutely nothing wrong with bolt action .22s. Nothing wrong with any of them, really. Some are better than others, but that's the same regardless the format/caliber.
The .22 isn't optimal for self defense, fighting off Zombie attacks or killing an attacking grizzly, yet the Israeli, and others, have used .22s as close-range sniper weapons (within comunity limits).
So what it really boils down to is: what do you see as your need, how much you have to spend and how many weapons do you want laying around for others to grab when you have to boogie and can't carry them all?
