I agree with most of what you say, including this piece. OTOH, "Northern California is going to be a very nice place to live once everyone dies off" overlooks at least one thing. After the die-off, there is going to be a massive toxic waste problem. Everywhere you turn, there are toxic chemicals. Factories, railroad trains, household cleaners. What happens when TSHTF? Some of the poision obediently stays in it's containers. Some of the containers are ruptured (target practice on a tank car anyone? Some houses burn down. Lots of cars burn and give off oil, burnt tire oil, sulfuric acid, lead, etc.
There will be a massive contamination of the ground and groundwater, everywhere except way the hell upstream (The Rockies above 12,000 feet?) and way the hell out in the desert (good thinking Jim). And if it's chemicals, your handy Berkey microbe filter may just let those PCB's and xylene right through. Boiling would at least get rid of some of the volatiles, but any toxics with a higher boiling point you'd have to distill your water.

My cool, considered unprejudiced opinion is that creekmore sucks.
My retreat is in far Northern California. This state is BIG. The first poster seems to think all of CA is like LA, San Fran, and the Central Valley. They're about as appealing as NYC for a retreat.
Look at a map of NW California that shows how much is National Forest, Wilderness areas, BLM land and such. There's many parts where one can walk 50 miles without hitting a paved road. The forests are full of game, the coasts (except near the cities) are loaded with fish and shellfish. When the early explorers traveled across what was to become the US, the only natives they met that were FAT were in California and the Pac Northwest from the abundance of food.
The local farming and ranching community by the retreat raises a wide variety of foods. Climate is nice and we have an abundance of water year-round.
Outside the cities, people haven't given up their assault weapons. Even San Francisco has gun shows, and there's no ammo shortage. Last show, Miwall sold two 18-wheeler loads of ammo. Let me repeat. In San Francisco.
Oh, and marijuana is legal here too. A med mj card takes about 15 minutes to qualify for. Got itchy fingernails or some vague anxiety? You qualify.

Have you read "The Population Bomb" by Paul Ehrlich? He wrote about all the same things you complain about. "Dwindling resources. No food. 1/3 of the population is going to die by 1984." He's just another misguided Malthusian. His economic principles are wrong. His understanding of human history (and the purpose of our future!) was wrong. I suggest you read the book "The Ultimate Resource" (1 and 2) by Julian Simon. It will likely allay some of your vague, misplaced fears.

Some good points. I often get looked down upon by my (Baby Boomer) 'progressive' relatives because I have 5 kids. I live on an old, run down, 10 acre hobby farm and grow lots of my own food. It is a rare occasion that I travel far. They have no kids, spend their vacations flying to Europe so they can bicycle through the south of France, and indulge themselves in whatever is in vogue amongst the 'cutting edge' crowd.
Who is using up the resources? Not me. Yet they fancy themselves a critic.

OK so, since I am training to be am EMT, on the infected cut. Cut could be little to big, so..... I'll assume it's smallish since that's what most people think of as a "cut".
a wash with soap and water, honestly, can do a ton of good. "Wound Pasteurisation" which is putting hot water, not hot enough to cook ya but as hot as you can stand, on your infected cut - patient has to control the application of the hot water himself as it involves getting it as hot as you can w/o damage. Povidone-iodine surgical prep is good, the scrub is good too but it has soap in it so you must rinse. Silver solutions may work, you may end up with some dandy dark tattoing where the cut was but if it kills the bad stuff you get better. Sometimes just simple squeezing, squeezing the pus out, does wonders.
Care of little wounds and cuts is an art almost, and as far as I can tell there's not all that much in EMT training on this, other than just bandaging 'em. Heck in First Responder we were taught not to even get too excited about washing wounds, just ABC Airway Breathing Circulation, control bleeding, the idea is to get 'em to the ER as quickly, in the best shape, possible.
I look forward to my EMT and then medic training, but it's gonna take a lot more training also, to be a goof half-assed Apocodoctor.
Don't forget to keep the patient warm. your body can battle infection best when energy is not lost keeping warm.

I've lived in Colorado and in Arizona, the conservative, Northern part. In CO I was in Colorado Springs.
Almost all Republican, almost all on Welfare. A crime rate that would make an Inglewood resident cringe. I know, I lived in Inglewood for a bit, it was nice by comparison. Cops blown away by the teenage kid they stopped, blown away by a nice, white, wholesome looking, kid is still blown away.
Taxes are higher in Arizona and Colorado, from sales tax on up. Electricity is higher. Everything' s higher (including the people, a good number seem to sniff glue.)
The only difference that can be quantified is, in CO and AZ the residents tend to LOOK different - all nice and pasty white. They don't ACT different, they ACT worse. From teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, petty crime, major crime, on down the line.
Now, having been a "token" white at time in my life especially childhood, I love seeing such white solidarity, but it's utter bullshit to say these nice almost all white towns are some kind of bastions of law-abiding-ness.
It's all appearance, the actual facts are UGLY.

The population rate appears to have grown exponentially in the past 100 years. It hasn't. The rate is below replacement level in Europe, and barely over, here. Fine. Why are you seeing such a "dramatic rise" in the number of people on earth? (Not a rise in the population growth rate.) I don't believe in the peak oil or overpopulation BS. Just do a little critical thinking for yourself and try to disprove your own theory. While your at it do a lot of investigation on mind control. The global population growth rate is declining. It has been for years.
This population decline is the result of a decadent, materialistic culture. People become materially well-off, and they stop having kids. Happens in every culture. Then people grow up, and realize that their lives are not fulfilled by material goods. They realize their mortality. Then they are desperate to have children. Unfortunately, these still-selfish folks often see children as just another "thing" to possess, and thus drop tens of thousands of dollars at IVF clinics when they're in their 60's. They bring into being 6 or so embryos, and kill off 5 of them, all so she can have her child.
Booming metropolises turn into ghost towns. Consider Ancient Babylon, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome. Respectively, they were the epicenters of culture and technology. For a time. It wasn't "overpopulation" that destroyed them. It was moral decay. Externalities did not do them in. They were done in from within.
Nobody's given me the scientifically-achieved, scientifically-proven objective maximum acceptable number of human beings on the earth, yet. But I do see a few subjective, anti-human feelings and sentiments. Feelings are fine. But from a practical standpoint, what do you propose as a solution to your personal angst about the number of human beings on earth?
Geoff--PARA 1: Pop growth curve looks the same to me as it has since 68; very steep; typical of those due for a die off crash. But ya might be right: the RATE of increase [of the increase in pop--do you "get that"??] could be lower; depends on which liar's figures you believe.
