THE HUNS HAVE ARRIVED
Near the end of the
Roman empire
, the barbarians moved in. The Vandals conquered the African bread basket which in itself would have been the coup de grace, but proving that Fate has a wicked sense of humor
the Huns
moved in from the east and pushed other tribes into the north to make sure the Romans were smashed for good. Hey, building an empire omelet requires breaking a lot of eggs so when the end comes you have a lot of enemies. Some were out for revenge, some for loot and some had no choice but to attack. It was that or starve. So in a way, the Mongols did conquer Europe in those early years. Just not directly. The Mongol tribe the Huns pushed into eastern Europe and displaced the Goths who had to migrate into the Romans back yard. Fight or starve. Are you kind of getting an idea where this theme is going?
*
Empire ends, always. The
American empire
is already collapsing but doesn’t know it yet. And our legions of enemies might hate and fear us, but at the center of it all, they simply want us to lose control of the remaining oil so that we will starve rather than them. Fortunately for them we have made ourselves vulnerable from overexpansion and they don’t even have to fight us for the oil. Not until we are much weaker. And then it will most likely be by proxy. As soon as the country starts breaking up, other powers will prop up sides to keep us divided and they will gain the resources. If there are enough left to bother over. Perhaps there aren’t other than in isolated cases. The east Texas/Louisiana/Californian petrocarbons ( being close to the coast is critical ). Nevadan gold, if they have a secure corridor. Although I imagine they only need to secure transportation to a coal area and transport that in to process the gold. It won’t take many air flights to take the metal out ( troop and/or proxy fighters resupply being another matter ). But, I digress. The main thing is we lose control of global oil so that the diminishing supply can be used much more efficiently by others ( in their estimation ).
*
This is when you have to worry about the Huns arriving. Not necessarily the foreigners. They must feel that there are enough resources available to justify using some of the last dwindling oil to invade us and that is up for debate. Our own population is who you must fear. Let’s just take a very small example. Elko, Nevada. Population for the county is around fifty thousand. Which,
post petroleum
, is at least forty-nine thousand too many for the area to support. My guess is that only a few hundred can survive here. Herding, and to a very small degree farming. Due to the cold ( no, not butt cold like Michigan, but cold enough for at least six months out of the year ) and lack of water not much will successfully grow here consistently except potatoes. Even herding is going to take some adaptation over time to breed in the ability to survive without supplemental feed. It isn’t going to be easy here. That is for those few that want to stay. The rest, the first winter, will leave. There aren’t enough wood sources for even those few hundreds to live unless they have underground and passive solar shelters. Back in the day, the Indians migrated up to
Ruby mountain
just to have enough wood to burn to stay warm in the winter. And there weren’t too many of them. Here, you almost never smell wood smoke. Firewood comes from hundreds of miles away and is costly. Everyone is burning natural gas or wood pellets and both are subject to scarcity. In the Fall ‘08 there was a huge demand for pellets and
the stoves
after the oil price had briefly touched $150 a barrel. Prices went through the roof, as there are a limited number of sources for the units and its fuel. In the days pellets were first introduced there were something like under a half dozen sources nationally for the fuel. That might have expanded, but the output has been limited by a niche market demand until 2008. Demand rocketed, but supply inched up. Higher prices even today. But the main thing is, petroleum transportation brings pellets. And of course natural gas is in decline, with shale gas having a limited time to run after it poisons the area from its processing. A temporary halt to decline only. And regional only. Here, one winter of supply shortages and the place empties out. I don’t think a
gas shortage
would see any energy replacements. An increase in electric demand would overload the system. Pellet demand can’t solve the limited supply issue. Natural gas is the main heat source here and without it the area depopulates. And that doesn’t even touch on the supply of food and other material needing to be shipped in. Let’s face it, 90% of the population here are parasites feeding off the success of the mines. They aren’t needed to keep the mines open. In Power Down, no one will supply the excess eaters.
*
So, suddenly you have over forty thousand people immigrating. Where are they going to go? Remember, this is ONE very sparsely populated area out of thousands that is displaced by the shortage of one resource. And it isn’t even a full blown
collapse
yet. Now, add in California. Millions of non productive eaters descend on surrounding areas. This is in the opening stages of collapse, when petroleum supplies are first starting to dwindle ( okay, we are already there- so, I’m talking about the first stages of overt denial of supplies to certain areas in a triage event ). This is not the time where you are allowed to shoot refugees since some semblance of order is still being upheld. Crime will skyrocket as the thirty or forty percent unemployed face real starvation ( Food Stamps will indeed cover far more than the current 30%, but will be ratcheted to a fairy tale inflation rate and you will see the inability to buy enough calories ). This is the collapse warm up. And how many tens of millions of people will be displaced? How many areas can’t feed themselves? The few that can will be overrun. Law and order will collapse, but after the refugees have arrived. You can hope that there will be some states that ignore the feds and roadblock refugees ( a repeat of California and the Oklahoma arrivals-how ironic that the same place will disgorge refugees now ), but you had better not bet on it happening.
*
Do you see why I’m counting on my area being depopulated, and not attracting refugees? They will be attracted to any area promising food. None of that here. I’m not claiming the perfect plan. I have a small window of opportunity to transition from stored food to
herding
, banditry or
mercenary
work. If it doesn’t happen, it is game over. But your chances in an agriculture area are little better. Millions of Goths will seek you out. They have little choice. Fight or starve. Millions will die on the trek from urban areas, drought areas, perhaps even flood areas, but millions more will make it, and take it. Yes, it is anyone’s guess how the numbers will pan out. Will there be a migration during the collapse, when governments will have no choice but to accept the arrivals? After, where the locals can defend themselves against the threat ( don’t want to kill children or women or old people as they flood in to eat your food? Then you might as well just turn the gun on yourself )? The details are unanswerable. But the general outlook spells refugees to your area. There are no Huns to push the migration, but there is Oil Down. Same difference. Enjoy history in the making.

You should get some bills printed up ahead of time that say: FREE FOOD AND LODGING IN RENO. Then staple them up on all the street-corners when the time comes. That should help speed up the Elko exodus.
I read an interesting story in the Minneapolis paper this week about how guinea pigs could help solve Africas famine problem. Post TEOTWAWKI, small, quiet and fast breeding livestock might be just the ticket. Can't just eat wheat all the time you know.
I really wonder how many people well just stay home and lock the doors.Just the thought of wandering around looking for food?getting shot?Your property in texas has much better weather than where you live, you should move there, ive been in that area before, really green nice place.mabe a fresh start for you.RW
Truly scary!
And the answer is:
"SOYLENT GREEN"
Yummy
Nice discussion here...real food for thought. We got to think of these issues if not find solutions.
Nightshift says...great post, Jimbo. I think you nailed that one. Makes me wonder if bing in the south is such a good idea...
very good post. it will be like locust over the land for a while all food striped then the die off.live off the stored food till the masses starve then break out the seed and garden. and all us horney bastards need to remember concubines = work they have to be fed.clothing may be optional but to many cuties will be hard to feed so keep it to a dozen or less
RW-my lot in Texas would be great for slow collapse. Gardening, fishing and Food Stamps after #2 is paid off in two years. Little to no cold in winter. Redneck neighbors ( here it is asshat ex-California neighbors ). But for total collapse, you have literally millions of people in a two hundred mile radius. In N. NV you have only thousands in that radius. Big collapse=stay out of big cities.
I just can't believe how well screwed on your head it, Lord Bison.
Fight or starve, indeed.
One way to deal with the horde is to put up lots of flyers etc out here in Cali that the Southeast is the place to be, which I actually believe, if you don't mine possum, crawdads, and various forms of pone. Get 'em streaming in there, it can act as a population sink because along with the pone, you get all kinds of neat diseases. The South was a white population sink back in the day, too.
But mainly I'm posting today to talk about our first MZP. Mutant Zombie Pilot. Joe Stack. His Manifesto is being expunged online but people are saving it, so it won't go away. It's a long tale of trying to attain and maintain an upper middle class lifestyle in a declining world. Stack eats up his retirement fund "reset to 0" as he puts it, repeatedly. He spends $5000 on an anti-IRS campaign. Finally, he begins to realize his coveted yuppie lifetyle is like, rilly-rilly in danger, and so he takes his yuppie toy, a small plane, and loads it up with gas and flies it into the IRS building.
Now, any good Bison reader knows Joe Stack was an idiot. He used up his life futilely trying for a high income and all the trappings his parents had. When things went bad, instead of changing, he threw the ultimate temper tantrum. He threw away enough money to buy rather decent land, provide for his future Alpha Strategy style, and if he was such a hot-shit engineer, be useful and liked post Collapse.
And that's what makes these yuppie fuckers so dangerous. They won't last, but they can live off of their lard and their indignation long enough to kill a lot of people, and in that lot, a few good ones we'd like to have around post Collapse will get lost. Stack's aim was to kill those working in the IRS building. He failed, but it wasn't for lack of trying. These yuppie lardballs will kill you, to take your tractor, to siphon its gas, to keep their damn SUV going. They'll blow up a whole building because they don't have the brains to live and save on what they have left over after rendering unto Caesar. Or, if you really hate rendering unto Caesar, make too little to tax, that works too. A typical small biz owner pays far less tax than a Subway sandwich maker, I know. Stack's problems sound self-created. And when things get a little sideways, these yuppie types will take it out on YOU.
PS for some reason I have the internet again. I don't expect it to last.
Great post Jim.
What's the wild game situation like where you're at? With fewer people around would be hunting feasible long term strategy?
There are too many people and not enough woods left in Western Washington (where I'm at) for hunting to be much of a going proposition. But, when gas gets spendy those of us that know how to row and sail and don't mind being out in the weather might be able to get some protein and make some scratch off of fishing.
Like WOW Lord Bison. You keep hitting the nail on the head day after day.
When the 90% leave Elko we can get the wood from their houses and stay warm. Use the medal beams from the trailers to cover our under ground homes. Housing tracks can be turned back into fields and some of the houses can shelter the animals. Cars can make a security fence. Animal poop can give us cooking gas. My brain is going into overload.
Did Bret Ebey say if his Chinese corn mill still leaves iron filings in the corn meal?
Industrial hemp cannabis sativa provides food, fiber, makes ethanol, etc but won't give you a high if you smoke it as does cannabis indica aka marijuana. http://tinyurl.com/2nqtue
It is illegal to grow any sort of cannabis, though I have heard that you may buy cannabis indica aka pot aka marijuana at any schoolyard, pool hall or street corner.
If you are dumb enough to plant hemp (cannabis sativa)
to make food, clothing, ethanol etc you may come to a bad end suddenly. You may die in a hail of machinegun bullets and have your house burned down on you ala Waco. The SWAT team made an honest mistake. They said, " Oops. Thought it was pot, but it's not. Sorry about that," and swaggered away snickering and guffawing. Well, hey. They said they were sorry.
(Part two follows)
Re: Joe S. I'll acknowledge that Canative has got one take on it but other folks got others.
He [Ca Nat] does remind me of the tale from the depression era [I'm told] 'bout how the black janitor of a New york building remarked while watching rich guys splat after they jumped. "Dumb old white folks jes' can't live without their money"....
I think the money for him was a measure of self worth for a high achiever. He couldn't get past the rage of betrayal by the [PTB] and the system. Engineeers tend to be out of sych with "normals" anyway [IMHO]. There is/was a big problem for those guys after the Berlin wall fell. I had a BIL that got burned bad and he t'aint been right since... wasn't "right" before that; but while he could be himself and do his thing he got by. Lotsa under/un-employed guys from his classes and age group.
I think that there will be more of such stuff and not just from those engineers.
Ya can't keep pounding down the producers that have always tried to do the right thing and their best without backlash.
Some people you just don't fuck with.

Sounds like a cross between "World made by Hand"and "One Second After." I agree with your overall premise. Agriculture is dependent on cheap petroleum based products. Take those away, latifundia type agriculture fails. When that happens, starvation reigns. People do not generally sit down and politely starve.
Hey Man, I think you touched on this briefly at some point. You should probably think about getting a couple of goats and some chickens now. Chickens are easy and cheap and a few goats could likely be found for little to nothing.
