dumbass is as

DUMBASS IS AS

Dumbass is as dumbass does. Herein lies a tale for your amusement, titillation, amazement and enlightenment. Today, as I was expounding on a tirade of blarney, it was remarked that I took quite a leap tying together two statements. I was a bit wounded, as I like to think that my intellectual nuggets are as tightly woven as a pearl necklace and just as valuable. However, just in case there might have been a smidge of truth to it, and you aren’t used to my style of delivery, rest assured that everything I tell you has a point. At least at the end. But before I get to my continuing dumbassness, allow me to introduce a tale that will take the sting out of my own weakness.

*

A co-worker has distant relatives ( by the way, I would swear this is not embellished as the narrator is not prone to BS or sensationalism ). One aunt is a lesbian. Despite, or because of, being married to men five times. Her daughter was a stripper. She was in the process of getting divorced when she became pregnant at age 42 by her new boyfriend. She begged her estranged husband to stay married to her so she would have insurance. This angers the boyfriend who hits her. She leaves boyfriend and moves in with her stepfather, who had molested her when she was younger. You can’t make this kind of stuff up. I was nearly rolling on the ground, tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks. And what made this even funnier was that just the night before I had agreed to take back wife #4. Again. Yet, compared to the above dysfunctional relationships, I wasn’t so much of a dumbass. Thank goodness other people do stuff that makes you look smart.

*

Why am I trying to repeat the mistakes of the past? Well, hope does spring eternal. And in theory we could actually make a go of it this time. We finally got around to talking about our problems rather than just scream about them. On the surface, things look promising. There are still feelings. Well, obviously or I wouldn’t waste my time. But I came to my final decision really based on one thing. We will be in a world of hurt very soon and I want someone with me. Not to discount the emotional aspect ( I do better living with someone, even if it is dysfunctional ), but there are important practical considerations. I sincerely do not believe we will see out the year without major disruptions ( see my first of the year forecast ). I think it is down hatches and last minute preps time. I think it is time to trim down the cash reserves to the lowest sensible level and buy more food. The Hobbit Hovel will be completed in a month or two. I Will buy more bucketed wheat to place in it. The solar projects will be done. If I have the cash and time I’m going to buy some inserts for my Enfields ( converts 303 to 7.62x39 ) and buy a few sardine cans of ammo ( much cheaper than buying SKS’s, even though the trade off is you can’t fill the mag but rather must load one round at a time ).

*

The relationship with #4 was going downhill for years. On the surface it seems silly to think a change will occur. But if we are both sincere and both try harder than we were ( both just coasting and taking the other for granted ) I’m hoping things will be different. Honestly, I was a kind of silly not seeing the good part of the relationship. Here is a women that not only doesn’t care if she has to crap in a bucket, she doesn’t care too much about living in a trailer or that I’m working minimum wage. How could I not see how rare and precious that was? Why did I think I could find all that, with a nice rack? Looking at the gift horse and all that. The collapse has already started. I can’t believe I momentarily turned in a Yuppie Scum and thought I had the leisure time to prepare before the end. Okay, sure, it was companionship rather than food or arms, but I still can’t believe I was that weak. That I failed to see time was short and once again, compromises were in order. So, I’m not a dumbass because I keep having screwed up relationships. That is the ONLY kind I have. I was a dumbass thinking I had more time.

*

Now, while patting yourself on the back for being so much better than I, ask yourself if you have several years worth of food per person. If you don’t, stop feeling so superior. Throughout history, there have been overpopulations and famines and disease and die-offs. But never before have there been so many so dependent on a dwindling supply of energy to feed them. Before, the population grew too much and the soil was overused. But it was still an agrarian economy. All the skills and infrastructure remained. This time, there is no infrastructure in place. And the skills are not widely disbursed. This time IS different. Put in food stocks immediately because it only takes a small disruption to stop the supply of basic foodstuffs ( remember my talks on the low inventories of grain in large population cities, something like a thousand people per sack of wheat or something similar? ). Look, I can’t point to any one thing which sends a chill up my spine. I only know that I was really worried enough to move to Elko right before unemployment shot up before, and I have a similar feeling now. I don’t know what is going to happen, only that it feels bad and imminent. Take it for what it is worth. And start making compromises. A lot of grain is better than almost no freeze dried or MRE’s. A few bolt actions are better than half a semi-auto. And etcetera. To include the more intangible aspects of your preps. In my case, better to take yet another chance on a relationship than have none when it starts to matter. Two of you have a lot more than double the odds of survival. And, to be fair, if nothing happens, a chance to be happier in life. You’ll thank me when I’m in a better mood ( or curse me if it fails again and I get in a worse mood ).

First thought . . . dumb ass.
Second thought . . . stewpot.
Third thought . . . Okay, things are going downhill pretty damn fast. No one wants to be alone when TSHTF. Yeah, I feel something bad coming down the pike.

Good luck!

Good for you Jim! I hope it works out this time.

You might want to consider getting a couple 100 pound propane tanks to run an RV furnace before going into next winter. For 200 bucks worth of fuel you could be warm all winter and that makes all the difference.

Does the extractor work when using the 7.62x39 insert in the Enfield?

A single shot with slow extraction is way better than no gun at all but it would be nice if it extracted the empty.

Even though you didn't ask I'm going to convey a couple of recommendations for working with #4. Keep in mind I've been married to a great woman for almost 20 years that has crapped in a bucket, lived without running water and agreed to step away from a nice suburban home years ago to live in a cheap mobile home in the country with our kids.

#1) When she is talking with you ask if she is wanting you to fix things or is she just wanting you to listen.

#2) Agree to clearly defined rules of engagement that must be kept. Examples: no yelling; no walking away in the middle of a discussion; no bringing up old, resolved matters and the list goes on.

Good day to you and your dense fleece.

bitmap-I believe the ad states that after setting the glue overnight to seat the unit, you then extract the spent case you had inserted prior. So it must extract the case if my poor understanding is correct ( but of course, extracting from the bore and throwing out the case are differant so I guess I still don't know ). Vlad-please do advise, and thank you. I can't imagine it would be impossible to make your own, the Enfield mag spring is basically a piece of bent sheet metal so you just shorten the interior and put in your own spring if not just modify the existing, but not all of us would be up to that. My thoughts on the conversion- one third the price ammo, and the heavy weight of the rifle acts to absorb recoil, plus two round flexibility ( although you can damage the insert taking it out if not careful, so I would keep one gun 303, another 7.62x39 ).

Good for you. It is not good for man to be alone. Besides she sounds like a sturdy hand to help. If she was a sickly, whiney, yuppie, bitch I would consider keeping her until protein value was needed. I have been married to she who can kick your butt and mine together for over 31 years. (she was a state kickboxing champion in the 70's) Are we to be blessed with a picture of the happy couple?

DON"T get the stupid insert, you'll regret it. Just get an SKS if you HAVE to have the 7.62X39. Prices of guns will fall when people get hungry. Get more food!!! and water, ammo, etc. Make friends with a reloader. Teach the wife to reload.
DON"T lose your temper with the wife anymore, she can cut your throat while you sleep and give all your gear to the new guy.

Good luck, sir. I have only been married 5 years, but I highly recommend sitting down with your significant other and you both filling out an "emotional needs questionaire."

Dude...

Seriously

When it all goes down as a well prepared, armed, skilled male you will have your pick of desperate and hungry sluts.

Go re-read that passage where the chick was hitting on the hero in "One second after" or something.

Besides once these american femi-nasties get a taste of reality they will be much easier to live with and much more appreciative. If you take one in and protect her as it goes down she won't be near as easy to live with especially one you have a history with.

Don't do EEEEEET!

oldfurt-any specific reason to avoid insert? SKS cost, $200. Insert cost, $35. And I wonder if the Enfield will be more accurate than SKS.

Glad to hear #4 is back. Maybe with the break a better understanding of each other and the lifestyle will finally settle in and all will be good.

Now, we'd like to see #4 write a few pieces so we can see a woman's point of view of a preppers lifestyle. Trust me I could use that info here at my cave!

With the Enfield being .312 and the SK being .308, how's the bullet going to act going down the barrel? and upon exit? Seriously, Dude- get the SK and a couple'a spare mags. Might save your eyesight and a few fingers.

anon507-it was my understanding that the Brit, Jap and Russian were all the same diameter bullet. I could be wrong. And why would a product be offered ( for quite some time now ) that was as dangerous as you claim, and with no uproar from the gun fags? And why would I need extra mags for an SKS if it uses strippers. I smell BS.

The inserts mostly work okay (accuracy will vary from rifle to rifle), but might be more trouble than they are worth. The long jump of free bore to rifling doesn't help matters either.

The MCA insert is extracted from chamber from shot to shot, but then you have to remove the cartridge case from insert. So you need a rod to accomplish this. Then you load a new cartridge, insert back into rifle and shoot again. Repeat. So rapid fire it ain't. One useful feature - the .32acp in .308 bore rifles are very VERY quiet in the woods. I'm talking nearly legal silencer here, a 100 yards away registers a faint pop.

A lot of hassle, but way better than using the rifle as a club. I have several of those inserts and have found the ones that work particularly well are the ones which insert cartridge closely fits bore of rifle. Those .22 / 12 gauge inserts for example - waste of time past 20 yards or so.

Where those inserts make sense is where the ammunition is hopelessly expensive to buy in bulk. I have one of the permanent chamber inserts (glued in bore) for a beater 7.7 Jap bolt rifle I have. 7.62x39 insert. Those sleeves DO REMOVE completely from insert when case is extracted - its like those old Navy 7.62 sleeves used for .30.06 M1s way back when.

Hope it works out for you and her. 8:05's advice to heat the damn trailer (it isn't really that expensive) is probably sound.
