COP TALK

Before we begin today, two different subjects of vast and unparallel importance. First off, a word from a happy loyal minion ( I don’t think he will mind my reprinting the letter as it retains his anonymity ): Hi Jim,

Last week I purchased your book The Frugal Survivalist. It arrived today and just wanted to say it was well done. I read it tonight and will lend it to my neighbor to read tomorrow. The book covers well the main reasons why, it's not overly wordy and a good guide for the new people looking at preparing. I've been following your blog for about five years and this book should be required reading before people read your blog because it clearly lays the foundation for your thoughts. Again, great job!

My note: the blog has been going on for about three and half years. He either was referring to my previous publication Bison Newsletter ( available now in a limited edition e-book ), or time has flown since he was having so much fun. I include the note as I thought he brought up a good point. Next up, we have Lady Gaga. I don’t make it a point to listen to her although I did catch her on SNL one time and while not thrilled at least I wasn’t offended. I was reading a business magazine and they had a piece on her mentioning that she names her loyal fans “little monsters”. You thought you had it bad with Loyal Minions. I like to think she got the idea from me ( on first blush appearing to be derogatory but in fact a term of endearment ), but at around a thousand regular readers my impact on the general culture is even less than a fart in a sewage pond.

*

Here is a reader idea for an article. I swear these are actually from other people I don’t know and haven’t bribed.

Mr Dakin,

First off, let me thank you for the post each day. Yours is the first that I read.

My suggestion for an article is concerning law enforcement and military presence in a SHTF scenario. I have a few friends in law enforcement and we have had some discussions concerning weather or not they are going to follow orders or stay home and protect their families. Here are a few questions that I would like every LEO to think about.

1. Will you follow the constitution or do whatever the government tells you during the collapse?

2. Will you comply if your superiors tell you to come into my house and confiscate my guns or beans?

3. Will you be willing to arrest/shoot citizens who are unwilling to comply with unlawful orders of the government?

I think that it would be interesting to get some responses these types of questions. ( I am sure that your vastly superior mind can come up with better questions than these)

I love these e-mails, where I can be just like all the other publications and fluff up my content with free reader writings. As a very quick aside, am I the only one that thinks Backwoodsman magazine has really had a streak of crappy issues? Okay, I’m a bit embarrassed to admit I can’t top those questions, at least not now nor in the last week since I got the mail. And more than likely not in the next month. So let’s just go with what we have. Remember, my father was a LEO, my best friend growing up was Captain of the Explorer post who went on to a career in the Sheriffs office, and I was an MP in the Army. I am not an enemy of law enforcement. It is a noble profession which has to contend with the age old problem of trying to protect and serve but at the same time being at the mercy of politicians. I have no idea how they could be without any corrupting dictates since the government signs their paycheck. It is a necessary evil and I don’t think more than 10% of officers are asshats. That said, neither the officers nor the public can fight the system itself. When I’m cynical and critical it is at the system rather than the individuals.

*

1. Since the Constitution is whatever the government says it is nowadays, I see few LEO’s quitting in protest even at the most blatant government shenanigans. We have lived outside the true intent of the document for many generations. Let’s put it this way. The War On Drugs, not even to mention the far less ambiguous War On Terror, is clearly not in the Constitution. And the means to battle it are clearly illegal. But every single individual in law enforcement is and has served under this war and no one protests to the point of quitting. I see no reason any other war against liberties will suddenly have the thin blue line in an uproar.

2. Same as the above. It is not as hard to believe the charge of hoarding and black market activity as to fool yourself into thinking a hippie smoking a doob is going to be the cause of the collapse of western civilization. If anything, more of the troops will support crushing those that are selfish and dangerous with weapons of semi destruction than they would have busting drug users.

3. Despite feelings of unease or unwillingness, most LEO’s will believe that in order to keep the peace they must make the hard decisions and break those bad eggs in order to make that anti-anarchy omelet. They may not like it, but it is for the greater good, in their minds.

*

I’m not presuming to speak personally for those in the profession, I am just taking recent history as a guide. Now, let’s set aside philosophy posturing and look at things practically. We assume that all officers joined the ranks to help their fellow man. But even then, they are practical. They have families and a mortgage to pay. It would not be prudent to quit when they don’t agree with a new law. If they are like most people their attitude is “we can vote them out of office next election” ( not stopping to think elections are as honest as Bill Clintons description of what he and Monica were doing with that moist cigar ). Unless they were told to shoot an innocent an in the back of the head in an execution, almost none would quit. Even if they broached the subject of unease over the laws they were enforcing to the spouse, she would quickly hit him aside the head, send him to the couch for a week, threaten to divorce him and move the kids three states over and take 70% of his paycheck and pension. As there are few or no jobs around, he would meekly comply. His family has to eat. I completely understand. Hopefully when the time comes, at least most LEO’s will do whatever they can to keep their job while at the same time trying to minimize the damage they are told to be doing. As for the other 10%, the jack booted thugs that happily kick in doors at 3 am like the KGB goons of old and then delight in killing kittens, they will look a bit startled when a permanently unemployed middle age malcontent ( the young think time is on their side, the old are too feeble, but the middle age know they are screwed yet can still lash back ) decides to strike back. Newsflash, dumbasses. We have the guns and the numbers.

Great point about the LEO's wanting to keep their jobs. I suggest they try this phrase out. "I was just following orders", and see if it works better this time.

The Supreme court has ruled Many Times that the LEO's have NO duty to protect. Therefore they can Not be held responsible for your protection or damage done. There is no liability for them at all.

Check out www.marcstevens.net and his No State Project. Changed my views on the court system and LEO's in general. He has a great way to cross examine that really gets the job done quickly. His gig is dealing with tyrants and thugs.

3) The Bad People will have lots of help from your neighbors: The most disturbing moment for me in the KGB museum was not in the execution or interrogation/torture cells. It was realizing, while moving through the excellent exhibits on the mass deportations of Lithuanians after "liberation" by the Soviets in 1944, that most of the deportees (many of whom were subsequently executed or starved or died of exposure and disease) had been betrayed to the NKVD/KGB by their neighbors.

Okay, now you've gone too far Dakin-san. Bad mouth the book EARTH ABIDES, okay, but dissing my fa-vore-ite magazine BACKWOODSMAN - you bad, you bad man! May a nest of pissed off fire ants find a home in your colon . . . :^)

Okay, I've calmed down a bit - anon again. About some of the remainder of your post . . .

The LEO in bad times will be a hard place, because I'm thinking there will be some folks that need attending to without the civilized claptrap that protects criminals more than the law abiding. I'm thinking the sexual perverts, spouse and children abusers and their ilk. They had better lay low is all I'm saying.

Another example, what if a man buys a girl from a family who willingly part with her for whatever - is that wrong for that man to claim he has done nothing wrong (Bought and paid for, bought and paid for)? There are going to be some gray areas, and the LEO will have to do some hard and fast thinking.

Hi Jim,

I heard about this and just had to watch! It is also right up your alley too, so I'm sending a link to it. The guy is good, but doesn't have as nice of hair. Here's a link to their youtube channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/LastEscapeProd

First:

When I miracle happens and you wake up and look like Lady GaGa you can call me anything you want and I won't care. I know she is nasty
but I've had nasty and it ain't half bad!

Second:

All the LEO'S I know live by one simple credo: There are two kinds of people-Cops and Assholes. I've known two really great cops in my life. Two. I'll keep my opinion about the others I have known to myself but you get the idea.

Just think, if you had stayed a MP for TWENTY YEARS you would have qualified for a GOVERNMENT WELFARE CHECK! But COPS get a PENSION! Sounds a lot like a double standard Bison. Cops get PENSIONS and assholes(everybody else)get a handout. See what I mean. Your attitude goes back along way don't it?

I don't mind you reprinting my letter and I was refering to the early days of "The Bison Newsletter". I'm one of the tens of thousands who bought the "Bison First 100 Issues" on CD. :-) In fact I purchsed two of them to give one CD away. I still enjoy cruising through them especially the first story "Survival Cannibalism". We'll never run out of food following that advice!

Wow Mr. Jim! You have been on fire for the last 4 weeks. I thinks it might be because your getting some now since she returned. LOL
I have not posted here in many a month but I think it is time.
I am a retired LEO out of So. Cal. and am still working as a reserve in FAR Nor. California.
Down here in So.Cal I can tell you the kids they have been hiring for the last 15 years have barely passed high school and I would not let them wax my car let alone hope they will do right during SHTF times.
Most of my fellow officers were to say the least, less than trustworthy. They might or will arrest you or kill you for your gun and food during times where there will be little oversight!
But go up to my reserve Dept. in Nor.Cal and these Guy's and Gal's will protect you to the fullest
O.K., A wave to the proud officers of the Siskiyou County Sheriffs Dept. and Local town Yreka.
By the way Mr. Jim, many of these Nor. Cal officers read your blog. Most from So Cal think you are trouble maker. Need I say more to back up my outlook?

To correct "panhandletex": Martial law does NOT suspend the Constitution. Nothing can suspend the Constitution; it is the Supreme Law of the Land. Once it was ratified, it could not be undone unless the government was overthrown and a new Constitution substituted for it. Government derives its power and its very *existence* from the grace of the Constitution; if it attempts in any way to suspend it, it is no longer a legitimate government and any and all participants in it are nothing more than dictators, oppressors, thugs and their minions. You may do with them as you please depending on how much or how little of your own personal freedom and sovereignty you wish to hand over to them. Without the Constitution in place, they have no legitimate power over you or anything else- they become usurpers.

That being said, the only legitimate use for "martial law" is if and when local government and/or the court system is PHYSICALLY unable to function, due to a natural disaster, domestic war, etc. Then, the military assumes the role of the courts and/or local government, but is still bound by civil law, procedure, etc. Martial law does not EVER supersede the Constitution and its safeguards. If any LEO or member of the military tells you it does, then you can rest assured they're poorly educated or ignorant, deliberately or unintentionally. Many will get crash courses in constitutionality if this situation ever transpires. Anyone who wishes to "just follow orders" is well advised to ask themselves if doing so is worth their lives.

But then we have the scenario that if TSHTF, will the LEOS stay or run? How many cops split from NOPD during Katrina with their weapons and gear? Will they be like the SS during the Battle of Berlin, or will they be like the Wehrmacht and head to the American lines rather that be captured by the Soviets? No answer, just some more food for thought.

Having spent many years in the LE field (I'll refrain from calling it a profession) I tell my still active friends to "monkey wrench the works when the time comes. iI.e. Pretend to do your job while jamming up the works from within.

Why prepare at all?- You may be on your own.
I believe that each individual should be responsible for Protecting and Providing for their OWN Family. It would be nice to rely on outside agencies and groups who are tasked with doing so and are paid for with Our TAX Dollars. One thing that has never, ever been discussed by the Media and in BLOGS is that Human Beings are born with the instinct to SURVIVE. Most also protect their Own. With this being said, I had a few thoughts about this in the 1980's when I was deciding on which Armed Service to Serve in.
- If I am tasked with helping someone else in the course of MY SERVICE- Police or Military, who will be watching and caring for my LOVED ONES?!?

- What would I do if I were ordered to HELP others in need after finding out MY OWN FAMILY was in Danger and needed me?!? Would I just Follow Orders and help others, or would I accept future repercussuions and go help my Family?!?
- Since all of the "help" Agencies are staffed by Human Beings who most likely have Families or other Loved ones, can you blaim them for not helping you IF,THEY have their own personal EMERGENCY or CRISIS??!?
- What if it were IMPOSSIBLE for me to get to my Family in time, if at all?!?
- My own, personal conclusion was this- I will always have the means available for my FAMILY. With me or without me, they will have FOOD, WATER, MEDICAL and FIRST AID GEAR of some type, HEAT, LIGHT of some type and "something" for thieir own Protection- along with misc supplies.
