We’ll be just a smidge under normal length today. It looks like I ran over something or was sabotaged and had a blown out back tire on the Super Deluxe Bison Transportation Unit One. I can’t really complain since it has been five months in between ( my normal damage rate is every other month ) and it didn’t happen while commuting ( which would have necessitated pushing the darn thing in the heat ) and a kindly neighbor ( the same one who had a vicious dog but got rid of him ) picked me up at the half way mark. Also, today saw the arrival of my mostest favoritist anticipated book this month, The Gods Of Money ( Gods of Money: Wall Street and the Death of the American Century ). If it turns out it sucked I will be in a foul mood tomorrow, just to give you a heads up. Although that danger seems remote. Before I forget, again, a few heads up loyal minions passed on to me. In happy news, we now have drought conditions in Thailand which might add rice shortages to the projected 25% wheat decline from Canada ( not a done deal, just a heads up ). I don’t know about flooding in China and their food supply, but it is bound to produce Bad Things. But don’t listen to me and buy bulk grain at the feed store. What the hell do I know? In People Are Flamming Jerkwads And Idiots department, the Amazon Kindle ( Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G, 6" Display, White, 3G Works Globally - Latest Generation ) e-books are selling 1.4 units per 1 unit of paper books. Personally, I see this as a warning signal to stock up on paper reference books before they inevitably have a “carbon tax surcharge” or a “fuel delivery surcharge” added to them. But then, I always see the sky falling.

The book I promised to tell you about, Empires Of Food, ( Empires of Food: Feast, Famine, and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations ) turned out to be a pretty good book, but with reservations. The last fifty pages of the 250 page book were pretty much gay. The authors kind of lost focus and babbled and wasted ink. The first of the book I loved. Nothing not already covered here, but in better detail and I would wager in much better prose. For instance, I tell you the Romans depleted soil fertility which helped in their collapse. These guys give a lot more detail about those conditions. It was a good read ¾ of the way, I will read it again soon, but you should be leery if you need to spend too much on it. Best to check it at the library before buying. I recommend it, but it isn’t groundbreaking or a “must have”. Last night I started and finished Noah’s Castle ( Noah's Castle ). It was a darn good semi-collapse novel. I don’t know if it was intended as a Young Adult title, it didn’t seem to be targeted for the younguns. But, then again, this was from the mid-seventies and perhaps our attention spans were better back then. Or we had yet to lose a couple of grades in comprehension. This wasn’t really a doomer book, as the end strongly hinted at disaster relief being on the way and panic being averted. But it nicely explored the dynamic of hoarding and envy and mobs “nationalizing” your stocks. It took place in Britain, so the only firearm was an illegal revolver. If you can stand the ten dollar price tag I don’t think it will disappoint you. It did give me the idea for today’s article, traitors amongst family.

We all know the wife is going to kill most of you. If your relationship is stable and your wife onboard with preps ( great article from the Three Amigos on bribing the wife- my agreement once was one gun for me, one piece of jewelry for her- but it was all good since we only shopped the pawn shops ), no worries. But if your spouse is a typical American wife, wanting to wear the pants and keep your paycheck and not put out, you are pretty much screwed, blued and tattooed. She doesn’t respect you. How can she, you pussy ( not throwing stones in glass houses here, I was one of the biggest pussy’s )? You justifiably don’t want to lose your kids, so she runs roughshod over you. She would respect you more if you beat her ( I’m not advocating spousal abuse until after the collapse, I’m just making a point here ). She will sell you out and move in with the first Alpha Warrior. Taking all your stockpiles as compensation for mental cruelty. The wife as traitor is a given. But what about the rest of your family? If you think blood loyalty is a guarantee, just think on how evil family becomes when an inheritance is at stake. I think I could trust anybody that sprang from my seed, and nobody else. Sons and daughters, unless there was a previous rift, most likely although not always can be trusted. Some siblings, but only is the bond was strong previously. Your parents, obviously. But that would be about it. Okay, obviously if you are a dictator or Caesar ( Julius Caesar ) no one could be trusted. But other than that, don’t trust anybody but immediate blood relations.

I’m not trying to exclude lifetime buddies, or soul mates that stick with you through thick and thin. What I’m pointing out is that just because they are family, they can’t automatically be trusted. My sister disowned my father when he was forced through the treachery of an ex-wife to cease child support payments as she was going through college ( the divorce didn’t obligate him to but he was paying extra for years until it became impossible ). How do you sever all ties with your family over something like money, after you are an adult? I’m not trying to invalidate what I was saying above, just giving the example that disillusioned me to blood ties. Don’t become too paranoid, but expect the unexpected.
