Well, Brother Creekmore is back (http://www.thesurvivalistblog.net/ ). He is a good egg and it is nice his site issues were resolved. Now, his readers, that is another matter entirely. What would you call wanna-be survivalists that just want to read up on the hobby, buy one case of MRE’s and spend more on their Fed Ninja Jack Booted Thug Mighty Assault Weapon Of Doom Mattel Toy than I did on wheat, Enfields and precious metals combined? A Poser? Well, let’s just be kind and call them misinformed. Peak Oil? I don’t need no stinking Peak Oil. Newsflash. It’s already here. We can debate about the start date, the longevity of the plateau, and the economic impact of import declines all we want. But who can proclaim with a straight face that the end of cheap and abundant oil hasn’t already started? We use 42% of our corn crop for ethanol and there is no problem with our oil supply? Really? I’m reminded of the debate between natural and man made warming. If the planet is warming up, what does it matter? We can argue over the definition of Peak Oil without ignoring that our country has a lot less of it and it is being felt economically. But to claim there is absolutely no problem is just silly. And, not unexpectedly I got no increased traffic from my guest article. I guess I scared away his survivalist-lights ( The Urban Survivalist Handbook

Yesterday I accidentally tripped over a new-to-me feature in Google Blogs with the statistics for your blog site. I have readers in Italy? My number one referral site is Brother Mayberry
(http://mayberry-keepitsimplestupid.blogspot.com/ ). Let’s give up a round of applause. Thanks, Bro. I had kind of forgot about Mayberry so it was nice to get back in touch with his site, even if he does take the politics a bit too seriously. Obammy or Bush, either one. Republican, Democrat, Tea Party Dude, all will screw you over in a heart beat on orders from the bankers. Which brings me to Glen Beck ( Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government
*
Were was I? Mayberry. I happened to read a bit on his fiction entries ( I believe it was “One” ) and ran across a tidbit that was a direct poke in my eye. I don’t know if he was trying to agitate me personally. I think it should all be about me and nobody else, but I realize others disagree. Our character is out wandering around after the Apocalypse ( Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse

So, blame it on Mayberry if you didn’t want to read once again on survival arsenals. I couldn’t think of anything else after reading this. It was like a cancer eating at my brain. Assume you are wandering around after the collapse. For whatever reason. Lack of food. You already ate the wife and need a new post-apocalypse bride with bigger knockers ( Bigger Knocker Beer

A rimfire is for a long approach at arming yourself. Long into the future when all ammunition has been used and all reloading supplies are used up, a rimfire is far better than a black powder gun or a crossbow/bow. Far better to lack knock-down power than to take a minute to reload or give away your position firing. Or have no firearm at all. A pistol is for being armed at all times, hands free. It is also nice to have in close quarters combat, when a foe can be closer than the length of a rifle. A revolver is better than a semi if you are on a frugal budget. And there is little need to reload quickly. At that close of combat, you are dead if you don’t dispatch the problem on the first load. Even changing a magazine takes too long at a distance of ten yards. With a revolver you have six quick shots. It’s enough. Semi pistols envision two opponents firing away at each other without moving.

A shotgun ( Allen Company Shotgun Shell Belt
*
The friggin Collapse just happened. There are no resupplies. Your ammo supply must last you forever. Semi-auto firing burns through your limited supply too quick. And, since you are NOT trained how to control your rate of fire in the stress of combat, bolt actions force you to make every shot count, even without training ( which is the status most of us “enjoy” ). The revolver is your bolt back-up, and its six shots are not too much worse than the ten of a SKS. And can be used at shorter ranges. Semi rifles or carbines are cool and fun, but absolutely the wrong choice for a de-industrialized post oil world.

My dear Lord Bison - Even though you possess Blago grade hair and a pair of stainless steel clangers, you are not always right! A shotgun can be incredibly useful for nighttime retreat defense. Many predators will attack at night, especially after they have lost members in daylight attacks. A cylinder bore 12 gauge will put between 27 and 41 number 4 buckshot in a 50 inch circle at 50 yards. You may not kill the target but you have a good chance of wounding him. Compare that to the single round from your rifle. Night happens, be prepared to defend yourself when it does.
Hail Darwin
Good to great Post; Your hair is extra lustorous today.
Ok; I'm an overedumacted idjit and this SHOULD be my field but; How come prepper "experts" like the cert-fema M.D. that was on the radio last night recommend changing out water supplies on a 6 month schedule; even bottled water?? If it wasn't contaminated when you put it in the pit of doom it may get funky but what's the problem with keeping it for use?? I must be/am missing some of my brain cells that I just don't "follow" the logic.

If you shoot at a packs of dogs, they run away. My experience is just a dog hunter video from Australia, but apparently that's what will be happening. So, SKS, Bolt Action, rimfire etc, doesn't matter that much.
Now this works at a distance. if they're surrounding you, then nothing short of the BFG 9000 (http://www.amazon.com/Doom-Collectors-PC/dp/B000WB60RY/ref=sr_1_4?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1285254905&sr=1-4) can save you.
Howabout us left handers? Lever actions?
Topic idea:
Keeping a dog for security purposes.
If you have so many stressful situations that you fire off all your ammo for your semi-auto, you are not likely to be alive very long anyway.
You would be better off learning to run and hide, before you go blazing away.
You forgot to mention battle armor. Don't we all want to be post-apocolyptic AFVs?
Jim, I think you are being hard on Mayberry. He may have written that fiction post, but check out his Sept. 14th post on THE MUSLIMS ARE COMING, THE MUSLIMS ARE COMING! His pictured choices are shown, two of them M/N bolt carbines (Glowing Halo Light Shines Bright!)
I'm one of those guys who comes to your blog spot via Mayberry, his rants are interesting. I don't always agree, but I always go away a little more edjumicated. :^)
Ya know, you can always train yourself to limit your fire by single-loading your semi when hunting, practicing, etc.
James,
Actually, the reason you did not see much traffic from your guest post on The Survivalist Blog was that all the articles posted since Aug were wiped out by the hacker attack on my blog and server.
I will be re-posting all of those article including yours in a few days.
As for my readers being wanna-be survivalists, I assume you are referring to several who disagreed with your assessment of peak oil.
I learned long ago that if you want to be agreed with all the time blogging is the wrong forum.
My readers even disagree with me often enough. And that is great because it gets everyone thinking and sharing thoughts.
LOL
Funny stuff.
Mayberry sends me a number of hits, too.
Creekmore- the one who got me hot and bothered was the one that said, in effect, "I saw 'Peak Oil' and discounted everything else you said". It isn't the disagreeing part but the closed mind part that irks. My minions are nice enough to pretend to agree with me, or praise my hair before disagreeing, but deep down they just think I'm an entertaining nutjob. I'm almost used to it. I'll be happy to eat crow if I overreacted or the opinion expressed was in the minority ( although to be fair, I did state it was a reaction just from the first responces ). Thanks Brother, peace.
This hair praise is getting a little out of hand, this site is mostly a sausagefest to begin with--its bordering on homoerotic now with the endless line's of hair-praise. Remember, hair can be gripped in combat--potential liability.
Shotuguns are the ultimately multi-purpose weapon for hunting, and #1 intimidator, and for most REAL self defense scenario's--meaning 10-20'yards at most or its probably illegal in most states--it works well under pressure, spray and pray with a shotgun actually can be quite effective.

HEMP FACTS
1. Until 1883, more than three quarters of the world's paper was made from Hemp fibre.
2. In Elizabethan times, farmers were fined for not growing Hemp.
3. 80% of English wood pulp is imported, destroying the forests and their delicate eco-systems in Canada and Scandinavia.
4. A Hemp crop produces nearly 4 ( four) times as much raw fibre as an equivalent-sized tree plantation.
5. Trees take approximately 20 years to mature. Hemp takes 4 months.
6. Hemp needs no pesticides because it is unpalatable to insects.
7. Hemp needs no herbicides because it grows too quickly for any weed to compete.
8. Hemp paper does not need chlorine bleach, which heavily pollutes rivers near wood-pulp paper mills.
9. Environmentally-sound Hemp paper is stronger, finer and longer-lasting than wood-based papers.
10. Hemp paper is used for bank notes and archives.
11. "You would have to smoke at least a field of this stuff to even get a smile" said Mr. Scott.
12. "The earliest-known woven fabric was apparently of Hemp, which began to be worked in the eighth millennium (8,000-7,000 BC)", says Columbia History of the World 1981.

HEMP FACTS continued
13. For more than a thousand years before the time of Christ until 1883 AD, Cannabis/Hemp was our planet's largest agricultural crop and most important industry for thousands upon thousands of products and enterprises, producing the overall majority of the earth's fibre, fabric, lighting oil, paper, incense and medicines, as well as being a primary source of protein for humans and animals alike.
14. The war between America and Great Britain in 1812 was mainly about access to Russian Hemp.
15. Napoleon's principle reason for tragically invading Russia in 1812 was also due to Russian Hemp supplies!
16. Hemp uses the sun more efficiently than virtually any other plant on the planet.
17. Hemp can grow in virtually any climate and soil condition, and is excellent for reclaiming otherwise-unusable land.
18. The word 'linen', until the early 1800s meant any coarse fabrics made from Hemp or flax.
19. Cannabis oil was mentioned by name in the Bible. Apparently, etymologists at Hebrew University, Jerusalem confirmed that 'kineboisin' (also spelled 'kannabosm") referred to cannabis used in a holy ointment. See Exodus 30:23. N.B. King James mistranslated the word as 'calamus' in his version.
20. Hempseed oil is said to burn the brightest of all lamp oils, and has been used since the days of Abraham. Scythians used to purify and cleanse themselves with Hemp oil, which made their skin "shining and clean".
21. Much of the world's paper was made from Hemp until about 1850. Since the 1900s, all newspapers and most books and magazines were printed on wood-pulp paper. Cheap throwaway paper, fitting in with a disposable economy.
22. Our forests, what is left of them, are being cut down 3 times as fast as they can grow.
23. Hemp offers a valuable and sustainable fuel of the future, "growing oil wells". Hemp has an output equivalent to around 1000 gallons of methanol per acre year (10 tons Biomass/acre, each yielding 100 gal. methanol/ton). Methanol used today is mainly made from natural gas, a fossil fuel. Methanol is currently being studied as a primary fuel for automobiles, hopefully reducing CO2 levels.
24. Henry Ford dreamed that someday automobiles would be grown from the soil. The Ford motor company, after years of research produced an automobile with a plastic body. Its tough body used a mixture of 70% cellulose fibres from Hemp. The plastic withstood blows 10 times as great as steel could without denting! Its weight was also 2/3 that of a regular car, producing better economy. Henry Ford was forced to use petroleum due to Hemp prohibition. His plans to fuel his fleet of vehicles with plant-power also failed due to Alcohol prohibition at the time.

Uh... nice hair! Is that hemp oil on it?
Suave...
Ok, I must bow to your semi-wisdom. I agree, it is way too easy to get carried away with a semi. It took me YEARS before I was calm (& confident) enough to place my shots! I finally did it by only using just the one clip in the gun. However, now that I count bullets, I make them count! Of course, needing them to count, aids placement!
Wild dogs & 'yotes...
The way to deal with them is to shoot the LEADER first, (the closest) then the second. Usually, the rest of the pack will scatter - giving you time to escape (and reload) or hide, and pick them off as they return to eat their leaders.. Be sure to take some home for dinner! Using a overnight salt-soak and a pressure cooker (and lots of spices!) makes a big difference...
It's hard to shoot a fast moving animal. Here is where a (long barreled/legal4hunting) .22 semi-pistol, and being calm, and counting your shots really help. Hmm... (I hear) attacking dogs... draw... aim... one, two, three... It's possible to shoot a dog in it's running-away-ass (as they scatter) and kill it.
On a bicycle, it's a chore to shoot anything. (Transport laws...) So I use a 4' fiberglass "stick" (in a plumbing-tube bike-holster) and quietly WHACK any snarling, near-enough-to-bite me dogs. (I'm done with rocks and yelling!) If the owner watches (and does nothing) that's fine with me! A few quiet whacks and the dog quickly learns. And, you gain a point with the neighbors by not killing their meatsheald/buddy. With non-domestics it's best to really whack them hard! (Aim for the eyes!)
Counting your shots is an aid to being calm. Plinking and Varminting gives you the skill level (muscle memory) to place your shots. It's also handy to know Where Exactly, the heart/lung areas are, of anything, that you may need to shoot.
A wild dog/yote ain't worth more than a cheap bullet! Save your big (=$) bullets for big things.

It has been my experience that a man, or men, will hesitate before attacking or continuing an attack towards a woman with a shotgun.
YMMV. Glad I had the shotgun. And there is no other sound in the dark like a shotgun being racked.
Bison Bro, you should start a second blog - just about your hair.
It is a true shame that so much ethanol is being burned for fuel when it could be honest booze instead. BTW, I've heard another use of the right kind of hemp is a pleasant smoke.
Have it all; bolt actions, carbines, revolvers, semi-autos, shotguns. Whatever ammo you do come across you'll have a better chance of having a firearm that'll shoot it.
I listened to a guy unload his bolt action .308 at a running deer so fast that I swore it was a semi auto. He got the jaw, leg, and in the butt, another guy in our party had to finish it off.
A bolt action can be fired very quickly - with the same accuracy as a quickly fired semi.
Oh, Lefty, My dad is a southpaw too, and he has a pump action .243. He likes it as it has the same action, feel, safety location as his 870. He's only ever had the M1 30 carbine catch him in the face once with a spent shell.
Lord Bison: Although your hair exceeds Warren Zevon Werewolf of London standards, and your choice of bolt-action in firearms is beyond reproach, there are some problems that are best dealt with by a good 12 gauge.
