GUEST ARTICLE
A couple of ideas
I am not very smart so listen to what I say and use discretion! This is not false modesty on my part I really am not very smart. It took me a long time to admit it but here it is.
I have written a couple of guest articles . I could say it was because I was concerned with Jim being stressed and overworked. I did feel genuine sympathy for his dental problems but mostly I wanted to see what it felt like to see something I typed at the kitchen table on a real honest to goodness blog for all the world to see.For the most part the responses were fair to good.
This little article is so Jim can take a break when he needs too.
I have a bug out kit! I don't know where to bug too? But I have a kit. I realized that my 27 pocket fishing vest has almost all the recommended items that comprise a good 72 hr kit. Plus it is easy to carry/wear.
Plus++ you can fish if you have a body of water near by.
add a canteen and a couple of payday bars and you're all set.
Since I am no longer young or healthy my survival plan consists mostly of being a parasite and world class scrounger. Ego has no place in a survival strategy. I think urban settings offer more to a scrounge than the boonies. By the way, I'm the guy that never has carried a gun. (I own several,I just don't carry them around.) I see packs of two legged vermin all the time. I just don't feel like discussing my constitutionally guaranteed freedoms with a angry group of young cannibals.
. I have tools that I use now that are important to urban survival. A water bandit is essential for getting water out of a hose bib with stripped or no threads.
Available lots of places for under 5 bucks.
A four in one emergency tool, non sparking for turning gas and water on and off is great. You can even dig a poop hole with it if need be.
Biggest bolt cutters you can handle. (Use your imagination for uses).
Dumpster diving stick with crook on end.
As long as you are careful, plugging a power meter back in straight is not hard

There! got that out of the way.
A special key for commercial hose bibs allow you to turn them on.Available at really good hardware stores and plumbing supplies.
While we are at it a wrench big enough to unscrew a 4" plug on a clean out provides a good place to dump holding tank or Porto potty.
A electrical tester to test live outlets comes in handy if you find a hot outlet accessible somewhere.
A wagon ( that's right I said wagon) doesn't generate the same reaction as a shopping cart. You get the idea.
I am also very fond of space blankets. I am told the survival dude on TV recently showed how much heat reflects off one of those babies. I agree. I also utilize tarps, bungee cords, Sterno stove or hobo stove to good use.
A DANGER sign,or CLOSED FOR REPAIRS sign or OUT OF ORDER sign will minimize knocking and kicking when you lock yourself in somewhere.Of course, I live in a motor home and have for a long time.
When I make scrounging runs into the urban jungle I still use many of the techniques I learned years ago. they might help you out someday, who knows?
P.S. just because a area is pitch black dark doesn't mean the cameras aren't working.

I like the ideas, some I've thought of, others no. Just a thought, expand on them a bit. A little more on the background of how you came across the idea, you know, a story. Makes it much more interesting, and helps hammer home the point. Two thumbs up, carry on.
A set of bump keys would be great for an urban survivor. There is a lot of info on the net about how to make bump keys and use them to pick locks. One Kwikset bump key would probably open 80% of all locks you will find. Imagine being able to get into a vacant building with no sign of forcible entry. You could replace one door lock in a building with your own deadbolt and have 24/7 access. Do not get caught with a bump key as it is considered a burglar tool.
Hey Rat,
Thanks for the post. Sometimes the most common sense suggestions are the ones we forget.
First off--what is a water bandit? I've never heard of one before.
The dumpter diving stick is a great idea. When we first moved here the dumpsters where not manned or gated off. Got some great treasures out of them. A hooked stick saved you from having to go in and possibly get hurt.
When we first moved to our property, we lived in a pole building shop. We attached a space blanket to the wall behind the wood stove--kept the wall cold (for fire danger) and reflected back a lot of heat. For as cheap as they are, they have lots of practical use.

Those are some good ideas. Another tip was read in some book (cannot remember title) which mentioned a way to remove manhole covers. Extremely heavy, but two bolts connected by a foot of heavy gauge wired can be used to do this. Tip one bolt perpendicular to surface of cover, insert into hole and allow bolt time to rotate back to horizontal. Then pull up.
Never know when an alternative route is required.
Another item very useful in warm climes - hammocks. In hot humid buggy areas, invaluable space to sleep or rest. Very compact - extremely useful item, and pretty inexpensive.
