COLLAPSE LEADERSHIP
Let's try again and see if it sticks ( i.e. I have the Web time to keep it up ). The junk land listings. Go to

If you are feeling all bummed out and depressed and really need more laughs than you can get from reading my drivel, listen to Glen Beck (
Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government
). Today he was comparing the Bolshevik Revolution (
Wall Street and the Bolshevik Revolution
) to the Earth Hugger extremists that posted that four minute video about killing eco non-believers. I haven’t seen the video myself, so of course I’ll comment on it anyway. The people putting it out claimed it was supposed to be funny. Glen thought that it was the second coming of Nazism. I mean, seriously. Come on, Beck. The Birkenstockers have been braiding their armpit hair and screaming for the extermination of humanity ( one presumes with the exception of Sierra Club members ) for decades now. Making serious money, he employs researchers ( my research consists of trying to remember what I read from a book three years ago ) so you would think he knows this. So he is just enflaming the masses. Yes, I try to enflame the masses too. But my minion readership is far smaller than his so I’m doing less damage ( and I doubt any of you actually believe me, so I claim zero damage ).

To the commenter asking how junk land trailer living (
Trailer Park Feng Shei - 6x6 Iron On Heat Transfer For White Material
) translated out to a family, I have covered that before. But because you’re new I’ll quickly go over it again. You set up in a trailer, if you are smart in a zoning liberal area, and immediately start to expand. Don’t move there the beginning of winter and expect to live crammed together for three months. Cabin fever (
Cabin Fever [dvd/limited Sell-thru Edition/special Outer Shellnla
) will short circuit the experiment ( wife- get those damn kids out of my hair or you get no nookie. Husband- kids, we’re moving back to town ). You can live together for the short period it takes to build a 8x8 adjoining cabin ( in my neck of the woods any stand alone structure under 100 square feet needs no building permit ), or better yet immediately move each kid into their own cheap tent as you quickly build. Or, if you have the money and no time, each kid gets their own junk van or trailer as their room ( and each must sacrifice a portion for the storage food ). The whole idea is to pay as you go and do it cheaply. As for the grey and black water problem, I would haul the waste at first if you need to wait on a septic ( myself, I would always build over capacity with septic for a margin or error ). You can place the waste tank in the pickup bed and use one of those uphill RV pumps to pump from the RV tank. Then go into town and find a RV waste dump. You go into town for groceries anyway. Of course, for long term you need an alternative. But here we are talking about a quick off grid set up to save on rent. Let me know if that doesn’t cover your questions. Leave another comment or just e-mail me. [ tomorrows post will be on family sewer solutions ]

Societies leaders have almost never been capable of collapse management. It is like asking a frog to manage a flying school. But that frog can swim like no one else. I know some of you have a hard time envisioning society as anything other than a loving group hug. And I know you scoff at social Darwinists (
Social Darwinism in American Thought
). But if you look at man as any other animal pressured to survive from solar energy alone, you must acknowledge violence. Oh, look at the cute baby lions! Holy Friggin Crap!!!! Daddy lion just ate the cute little bastard. Welcome to the harsh reality of living within resource boundaries. It might be considered less cruel to eat surplus eaters than letting the whole tribe starve ( I know there is more involved in lion cannibalism, I believe the offspring must be biologically related or something [ sorry, my memory is sketchy here ] but the engrained behavior of population management is what I’m getting at ). Man procreates. More bodies ensure family strength and farm hands and warriors. Primitive hunter/gatherers (
The Hadza: Hunter-Gatherers of Tanzania (Origins of Human Behavior and Culture)
) ably managed their births, but their environment was less forgiving of surplus population. Once we went to agriculture we always have had the opposite problem which is not enough people. You needed muscle labor to dig irrigation systems. And you needed more farmers to feed the workers and a surplus to feed the warriors to protect the irrigation system. Leadership is focused on growth.
*
Growth is a bad word right now. Growth has destroyed the planet, impoverished our middle class, etcetera. But growth has been normal for ten thousand years. While you have functioning farmland it is beneficial. When you run out of farmland (
Villeroy & Boch Design Naif mug # 5 Farmland
) it becomes a problem. But only if you didn’t use your growth to build an army that now goes forth to steal your neighbors farmland. We are that exact stage ourselves as we steal the oil needed to grow our crops. Wasteful SUV driving and pollution and whatever else we are doing to live in decadent luxury is besides the point. Food is the point and energy is needed to grow that food. Politics, economics, it is all window dressing. Focus on food and you know how things work and what we will do in the future. Growth is the answer, and always has been. Government that stays conservative to live within the energy and soil fertility is always overthrown by the neighboring government that mines their resources for the surplus needed to take what they don’t have.
*
A successful government is based on growth to survive. So when a collapse comes along, say, the corn yield is off as the jungle sees a multi-year drought, you don’t have a leadership that can do anything other than grow ( say, by increasing irrigation or centralized retention ponds ). Only after collapse can a new government come along that thrives on sustainable leadership (
Sustainable Leadership (Jossey-Bass Leadership Library in Education)
). And that will be limited until the time growth becomes possible again. Which is why today you see “business as usual”. The power structure in charge ( and it doesn’t matter the make up, be they central bankers or corporate powers ) was reared on growth. It isn’t just that growth enriches them, it does, but that lack of growth endangers them. If you stop growing, another tribe invades and conquers you ( small village tribes, city states or vast nations, it is all the same ). Growth is survival. You can hate the wealth that goes along with power, but the reason most of us don’t care is because the payment for that wealth is to protect our lives ( and, yes, that is pretty much just protecting your slaves, but it ain’t like we have much choice ).
*
When growth is survival, don’t expect the “sustainability” movement to ever catch on. They poo-pa the Oil Age, but that surplus energy (
Energy--From Surplus to Scarcity?
) allowed them to live their ideals without being killed since the state protected them. I guess that is what I hate most about the Hippies ( although I’m not saying they don’t have some good ideas )- their total lack of realism when it comes to survival. Warfare is a natural part of man, it allows his survival. And living as a pacifist is denying you need to fight to survive. We can afford it now, with such an energy surplus, but it ain’t the natural order of the universe. Gandhi only could have lived in the Oil Age. Any other time he would have been killed before he made a name for himself.

James,
Definately watch the 10-10 video. It's the funniest thing I've seen in a long time (esp. if you're a Monty Python-esque fan.)
It's funny because this guy really pulled one over on the holier than thou greenies. It was a perfect guerilla warfare move of infiltrate, use the enemies resources, do your damage and leave.
Or you could view it another way. The guy is a total greenie and the TV station is in on it and the big fake fuss it to cause this clip to go viral so more people will see it in the end.
Either way, the film maker has pissed off both sides which I find extremely funny because most people take themselves way to serious.
Remember "always look on the bright side of life".

I have seen the video: http://brokenpatriot.blogspot.com/2010/10/they-are-tree-huggers-no-more.html
While I usually find gore and humor a good mix, there is something very creepy about this one. After I watched it I ran to Costco and picked up another 100# of rice and some more ammo.
Thanks for the information on the family setup - that was helpful.
For those who haven't seen this video, I'll clue you in. Picture a classroom full of kids and a teacher asking them to lower their carbon numbers. All but two hands raise as they agree to comply. The teacher singles the non-conformists out and then says she needs to find a button, which she pushes and the two kids are blown to bits. The camera then zooms on the faces of the other kids that are sitting there with blood splatters all over their faces.
Good stuff, Bison. You're the only one that knows what the hell he's doing.
Keep writin' the good stuff.
Mountain rifleman
I don't always agree with Glenn Beck, but this time he got it right. There's nothing funny about two kids being blown up in front of their classmates and then the camera showing the survivors with blood splatters on their faces. This is a little too reality oriented for me. You can see this carnage on the news.
Ghandi also could only have pulled it off with the Brits by using their own laws and guilt of Empire against them. Had he tried it with the Soviets, who are not famous for their sense of humor, he would have disappeared in the middle of the night to never be seen again.

10-10 is World Homeless Day. The greenies (yuppies to their core, and all in favor of hunting "the homeless" for sport, are intentionally using that day to push their cause.
Ever notice how you've never seen a poor hippie? Sure, I grew up in the 70s too and you'd see hippies playing poor. But they always had parents in the Midwest somewhere who'd jump to send 'em plane tickets to get home in a wink, and besides that, money for food, and soap.
An awful lot of homeless folks now are ex-middle-class. Guys and gals who believed in hard work and exercised their belief. Who did the right things, went to college or at least all the college they could afford, etc. Working-class and lower middle class. Some mid-middle class. Not a lot of hippies/liberals/greenies there. Most still believe in hard work and can't figure out where they went wrong, and why they got so badly fucked.
First: glen beck is a religious idiot. Anyone who listens to any of his anti-government propaganda should be denied the right to vote. what he needs is a stiff drink. He was probably a ok person when he still drank before he became a sanctimonious asshole. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot wrong with the government but undermining the only government we got has serious consequences for OUR COUNTRY! The same country Bison and I both swore to defend against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC.For real belly laughs I prefer bill O'reilly.
second: yes, the whole world is swirling down the crapper but that doesn't mean we should be helping it along.
Third: I totally agree with the anon who spoke about hippies. I wanted to be a
hippie but my parents couldn't afford to send me to Berkley.
right a nasty response if you want but I don't argue with idiots either.
the rat
Smart Hippies put down the weed for awhile and went into the power structure to destroy it from within so they could build their Utopia, no matter what it cost to you and me. Dumb Hippies smoked their brains out, and (if still alive), are roaming the streets and sleeping in Shelters. However, Jim is right that for both to survive, they need an Energy+ world. When we shift into Energy-, most of them will die off (unless they become the new Baron/Baroness), along with most of the Yuppies, the last of the Working Class ("Shutting the Plant down folks, nobody's buying, so you're on your own!") and the Burger Flipping/Groundskeeping Underclass when the Golden Arches and the Country Club closes. Also the 2-3 Billion members of the 3rd World who need their Daily Ration from the U.N. to stay alive.
Suddenly, junkland, a veggie garden and a trailer would seem like the Emerald City to about Half the Planet when TSHTF hits the fan, doesn't it? Prep Now!
Rat,
I have always said that a religious
zealot or fanatic is someone who is more religious than you.
The same thing goes for being a "fanatic" about anything, 2nd amendent, Freedom of Speech, abortion, animal rights, what have you.
Panhandle Tex
Friends, let me be perfectly clear. I have nothing against religion. I respect their right to believe what they want, even though they seldom show me the same courtesy.
I do object to people who use religion as a tool to sway others. Just because a person quotes a verse or waves the flag doesn't make them honest or right.(glen beck)
Personally, I have about given up on television. I pay for HBO because I like graphic violence and nudity. I like reality. The way things are,not the fantasy everyone (almost everyone) desires .
Anybody been following silver and gold prices lately. Bison and I are making a killing, how about you?

Interesting Thing I picked up about this post, Oh, Immaculate of Folical, is the role GLOBALISM might play int the plans of TPTB.
Think about it. If there is one world governance, and it can be held together (very tough in an age of diminished/ing resources i know - but possible if TPTB are willing to sacrifice enought) then you are looking at a possible Static/sustainable world. There will obviously have to be some controlled population die off from where we are now, but that might be obtainable just by letting the poor old farts like us pass on (obama care anyone?) and controlling/limiting births (chinas 1 child policy anyone?)
With a single global government with sufficent military strength no local or regional power would have to fear their neighbor, they only have to fear the global government. Of course the global government would have to be a tyranny of some sort to keep the whole thing together. Mass genocide of revolutionaries would be used. Resource control, Military power including a few nukes (they wouldnt have as many as they claimed to have just enough to make a couple of clear examples) chemical weapons.
Sure it would be expensive in a low resource world, but labor would be cheap and the entire world would be able to be taxed for the resources necessary. And if not global, what about continental?
