crap grinders

CRAP GRINDERS

I’m going to give you a link for a company that makes non-electric pellet stoves. Yes, I’m aware that pellets are only good for current frugal heat rather than post-apocalypse heat. I’m aware that pellets are only good in areas where you can’t find cheap wood. I’m aware that this unit might be a bit pricey compared to what you might be able to cobble together yourself. I am not trying to get into a debate on the merits or non-merits of pellet stoves in and of themselves. Like anything else they have both good and bad points. What I am doing is making you aware of a resource that you may or may not want to take advantage of. That is up to you to decide. I’ll post your comments if you go against all I said above, but beware I mock you now. I got this company name through the book “Do-It Yourself Emergency Preparedness”. Which was about all this book was useful for. Unless you are a total novice just starting out down the looking glass of survivalism, this book was far too elementary a resource. The companies product is sold here:

I’m getting a few snide comments implying that I only allow favorable comments to be posted. I only delete the following. If you drop the N-Bomb. Extreme sexual imagery ( I might be crude and barbaric but inexplicably I remain somewhat of a prude ). Or, libeling someone to the point I think the lawyers might attack. That’s it. I’ll post anything else. The only reason there aren’t more unfavorable comments is that 1) I’m perfect and 2) those that are blind to my perfection are too lazy to complete the comments section security requirements. Do you think this is the way I want to live? Perfection is a friggin curse. I have to put up with undisguised envy all day. Often I am compelled to act stupid just to blend in. Thank the gods you don’t carry this burden.

I didn’t confirm, but I heard that Libya pumps 2% of the global crude supply. If true, I had no idea they produced that much. I thought they were more of a marginal player. Remember, Saudi Arabia is 10%. Are we that far gone that the Saudi’s can’t cover another 2%, or for that matter 2% loss equals this much turmoil? Most likely, yes. Of course, I’m writing this on Wednesday. This was just posted by Greg.

I might be totally eclipsed by events once you read this paragraph.

A wise loyal minion commented that they wondered if the cheap Chinese grain mills were good enough to last the entire supply of four hundred pounds of wheat. This is a very good question. You might think that a cast iron grinder would be indestructible, but the Chinese have been known to make some atrociously bad products. It would be easy enough to just blame the greedy American corporate cretins who wanted to add another Swiss bank account to their portfolio, but perhaps the Chinese really are out to get us all and they plan on eliminating all the surviving Running Capitalist Dogs after the Apocalypse when their grain grinders poisoned them or blew up after three revolutions of the handle. A higher quality grinder is not too much more money, so perhaps we should be a bit more cautious before we buy a crap grinder. Here is a link for the corona brand corn grinder.

http://www.wisementrading.com/grainmills.htm

If I’m not mistaken they have come down quite a bit in price, previously going for $60+. I would not advise waiting too much longer before you order any heavy item through the mail. If oil keeps shooting up then shipping prices will quickly follow. Right now, let’s figure they go for about $45-50 after shipping. Perhaps it would be a wise move to initially spend the additional $20 to assure that your grinder has a history of good performance. Now, granted, I can’t guarantee that the mill currently isn’t a piece of crap. All I can tell you is that the Corona brand mill I used as a kid worked for years and many, many buckets of wheat without ever having a problem. Buy the better unit first and then use the Chinese copies as back-ups. Or trade goods. Right now you could probably buy those mills for the same cost that shipping alone will be in the not too far future. I’m just saying. Now, there are still valid reasons to just buy the crap mill. As I said, cheap back-ups. But also, if you aren’t storing that much wheat, why spend too much money on a mill? I don’t think there is a thing as too much wheat, but you might feel comfortable with just one or two hundred pounds. Perhaps you feel that the end of the world is impossible, but you also want more than just two weeks of food for a minor natural disaster ( if the Madrid fault goes, or Yellowstone, it will be total collapse. But I’m talking about recoverable disasters ). A mere hundred pounds of kernels will only cost sixty bucks, in buckets, and feed two people almost two months well if a few supplemental goods are also available. So why should that small amount call for an expensive grinder?

*

If you plan to stockpile multiple years of grain, of course you want a better mill right away. And a crap unit for back-up. You do not want to be without a grinder, wheat gruel will get disgusting really quick. There is a grinder that looks like it is made in Latin America. It could be just like a Corona. And it is only $25. But there is no information on it to determine much. Proceed at your own risk.

re corn mills in the bleak future
TEOTWAWKI means we can't place a telephone credit order, or drive to town for what we need. From then on it's root, hog - or die hungry. Use it up. Wear it out. Make it do or do without. I bought a Corona corn mill in 1968. My sons and their kids will use it in 2068 and 2168.
I have three steel burr mills: a Country Living Mill, a Universal corn mill, a Corona corn mill; and a Corona stone mill.
Here is Lehman hardware economical mill, allegedly equivalent to the Corona corn mill.

Please do read this review. http://tinyurl.com/49x4wdm
I think it is a case of unrealistic expectations due to inaccurate labelling. She is disappointed that Corona does not make fine wheat flour.

Of course, you are perfect Lord Bison. Don't listen to those who would blasphemy your name.

The reason most of your comments are positive is because of the curse which befalls on all who make negative comments.

Bewared all ye lesser mortals, the blessing or curse of Bison is fickle, it pays to compliment his hair in glowing terms to mitigate his wrath.

******

I have seen Corona Grain Mills at 2nd hand stores that were all wore out. So they don't last forever. However, you have to start somewhere.

If you can afford a $400 Country Living Grain Mill, by all means buy one.

But if you can't afford that, a Corona Mill will make you better prepared than anyone else on your block.

To be honest, Lord Bison has more patience than I. If you can't see that our 1st World status is going down, I don't know what will wake you up.

Get off your couch, tell the old lady to clean out the closet and buy 1200 pounds of wheat and a grain grinder.

.....Hail the silken haired lord...

ok, enough of the familiarities, boys and girls, time for business:

Jim has got it right.

Here's the scoop:

Now is the time to top things off!

Fill up the pantry
Fill the gas tanks
fill the propane
buy that box of 22 or whatever your poor ass can afford
buy toilet paper
have good sleeping bags
scrounge up and fill the firewood pile
get your teeth cleaned
get your fillings done
get some cash and hide it at home, a few hundred bucks is all you need
fill up some water cans
good warm jackets

..........and that's all you can do....forget paying off the credit cards, just pay the bills/rent/mortgage, don't sweat the debt too much.

if it's gonna go boom...then it won't be long...pick your disaster of choice...

it's leaning short odds on hyperinflation, jasmine revolution, broke governments and any gas gallon over 5$ is going to break the working classes neck. As for long odds...could be any mega event and then kissing your own ass goodbye will be all you can do.

if the short odds don't come true...well, you needed the stuff anyways...

Ordinarily in order to talk with someone like the bison you have to wait for visiting hours and sign in,so don't all of else feel so blessed.

When I saw the title "crap grinders" I thought o.k. Jim has finally gotten around to purging my pathetic contributions from his blog but no! he kept me! I am so sniff, sniff, gulp honored.

I am a beans and rice kind of guy so I don't get hard over grain grinders, I will say this: Buy two good ones. If wheat is how you have chosen to go then by all means have good grinders. It would be the ultimate irony to have your cheap ass grinder give up half way through your first bucket and there you sit with 25 more buckets to go.(Funnier than hell, but ironic).

If it is indeed the end as we know it then we will need to own two of everything if we are middle aged and one will probably due if your old.

There are three kinds of people. There are Chicken Littles, there are PollyAnnas and there are people like me,realists. We are called drunks. Well, this was fun, bye.

Buying cheap 'tools' usually wind up being costly, in one aspect or another. Never mind a tool that I may be depending on for food for my family. besides buying made in USA products helps keep Americans employed.

Jimbo! That link to Riley stoves, they sell portable LP stoves that cook better than most people's home stoves (and cost almost as much). Anyway the Camp Chef stuff might qualify as Yuppie Survivalist, but they're damn worth it.

Shame on the folks making snide comments! I don't always agree with you but:
-laziness
-politeness (it's your blog) and
-a healthy respect for "Artistic License" keeps me from making anything other than the mildest criticism.

As far as I'm concerned, you're the Place To Go for giggles AND to maybe learn something! Don't let the critics get you down, Jim. One reads lists of things to have, after an emergency...do ANY of these lists also have, "a sense of humor" on them?
