terrorists bugging out

TERRORISTS BUGGING OUT

Eons ago I got the book “No Such Thing As Doomsday”. It was a bit on the pricey side and would have made Rawles proud, being another bible of Yuppie Survivalism ( Rawles isn’t evil incarnate I always seem to be making him out to be, he is just the latest practitioner of the “don’t even think about bothering to survive along with the Beautiful People if you are poor scum” school of survivalism. He might protest at being labeled a Yuppie, but it isn’t about income as much as having the attitude that you are so special you deserve only the best. Most Yuppie Survivalists have more money in one weapon than I think you need for protection, food, water and land combined ). It wasn’t so much that it was a bad book, just that it was mostly a plan so out of reach financially for the average person that is was a waste of $30 for most of us ( forgive me if I’ve got the price wrong, I’m writing this on the weekend without Internet access- I’m going by the large obsolete Wang Supercomputer in my head for memory ).

The book mainly preached to get away from urban centers and set up a safe room with an air filter so that when Habeeb the camel riding terrorist set off a nuclear weapon you would be safe and sound. Ignored were the fact that regardless of the reason for quarantine, the efforts to contain mass flight would be bound to fail. Your small town paradise could be a nice target. Also ignored were the fact that our own government is far more dangerous to us than a terrorist could ever be. Let’s assume the government was smart enough to blockade egress roads at the start and not even count on their official decrees being obeyed. That would be the smart thing to do. That still wouldn’t work since enough folks would actually get their pimping SUV four wheel drives to actually get them around those obstacles. Yes, enough would remain trapped to make a living hell. Yes, a lot of escaping drivers would run out of gas. But enough folks could flee that they would become a danger to you. Even if only a tenth of a percent of L.A. drivers escaped and got two hundred miles down the road, you are still looking at seven thousand hungry, scared, pissed off drivers that are not prepared. If 1/7th of those forced all their fellow drivers off the road into a ditch or into a power pole, shot them and killed them for their gasoline, you still have a thousand cars driven by psychopaths headed down just a few roads, funneled towards the towns on those asphalt arteries. And with that gas they can get a lot farther than the initial gas tank contents would have allowed. Of course, you might think that you can just get all your militia buddies together and blaze away with a combined total of a rate of fire of three thousand rounds a second. You’ll be out of ammo for any other contingency, but you did stop the first wave of invaders quite admirably with your death dealing semi-auto. Congratulations.

I’m a firm believer in FDR goading Japan into attacking us, and I certainly don’t believe the fable of box cutters and planes as missiles conveniently buying us time from an economic collapse being from middle east terrorists. I’m not saying FDR knew exactly when or how Japan would attack us, but he certainly backed them into a corner where they had little choice. The bankers needed a war to save our country from themselves, and FDR gave it to them in exchange for Dictator For Life. And while the “hijacked” planes might not have been remote controlled, they certainly weren’t piloted by inept fanatics with next to zero training. The details aren’t as important as knowing that those that gain the most are most likely to be behind controlling events. 9/11 was a godsend, saving us from the Tech Wreck meltdown, ushering in vast centralization and giving the bankers cart blanch. We occupied the second or third largest oil reserves left globally and the one country that could be used to stage a defense against all potential enemies. Enemies being defined as anyone that wanted “our” oil. Our enemy is not a few terrorists. It is our own government. Not to mention our enemies that were created by our own government to keep us distracted and docile. We’ve already started fighting over the shrinking pie and it is only going to get much worse. Yes, I hate the government as only an anarchist can, but I also view it pragmatically. One small police force can do you much more harm under the direction of DC than an army of terrorists can ( the police have the home field advantage and are target-that’s you-specific ).

Recently, I just bought the other book by those same authors that brought you “Doomsday”. This time it is “Do-It-Yourself Emergency Preparedness”. I haven’t read it, so I’m not passing judgment, but from the chapter I did read it looks like a rehash. I’ll let you know at a later date but it does seem they just made it cheaper by radically shortening it and replaced the threat of nuclear war with that of biological terrorism. Kind of like Bruce Clayton did with his two books ( subject wise, I‘m not sure about length wise ). But at least, whatever its other faults, these books don’t advocate bugging out. They might erroneously lead you to believe your home is a safe castle, ignoring the big bad world out there as Yuppies are wont to do ( their only perceived threats are to their money, and their only solution to protect it is that same money ) but at least they don’t pretend that your SUV will make you just as safe. More on that tomorrow.

Your disaster book is out of print and lists for $200 new at Amazon now! I'll bet you didn't know you were a connoisseur of rare collectables! LOL.

You can even get scenarios (happened in Soviet Union) where the government strips food from the countries to feed cities.

I agree with you that the locals are far more likely to be an immediate problem. They are around permanently and likely to be more persistent.

Oh Bison, the Lord with the luxurious hair.

Given all the news lately, have you started to get your "last minute" items yet?

What news bits would trigger Your Bison-ness to make a last shopping trip?

remember, we were all supposed to be blown to hell 50 years ago. Look around, we are still here.

Sometimes I think we will survive all the various threats we are facing and die from fear.

Come On Everybody! this is the USA. The home of the Brave. We are Amer I CANS. When we are united,we win. When we are divided,we lose.

I am not going to stampede with the fucking herd. Prepare but remain calm. You might die of old age before you get to survive.

Before I forget, no survival writer has actually survived an apocalypse.

They all may be full of shit.

Any chance you can get another guest post from whoever wrote this one:

I would like to see more of this.

Love you dearly, err...maybe "I support you" is more accurate...no, not sent you any thing...how about, "I have warm and fuzzy"....no that's not right....

You're interesting. There we go.

The doomer/dog-eat-dog stuff might be accurate in the short run, but long term, people WILL form communities. Some by force and some by preference (force has a short reach, in both space and time under the conditions you describe). The most effective societies have been formed of folks who work together in a common self interest--that means the "baron" better make damn sure he generally stays on the good side of the people, else he will be eaten...

Anyhoo, as I said, you are interesting. That is high praise in the internut age...
