MAIL ORDER MADNESS
You are going to see several days of half length articles. It was a choice between that or days with no articles. As I already blathered to you, last Saturday saw no writing and I have a three day
vacation
coming up where I won’t write. I usually do that once a year, to visit family. I might try for another visit this July, if gas prices aren’t insane. I doubt it will be affordable if even available. Thank goodness I bought that plane ticket when I did. I’m also going to be giving you a day or more of guest articles only. Yes, I could be writing after work, and I did, but once I got behind there was no catching up. This is the best you are going to get. Also, remember that most of my articles are published three days after I write them. A lot of times it looks like I’m playing catch up when I’m actually leading the pack. I wrote the article on yes-men in the media on Sunday, posted it Wednesday or Thursday, and Ure had an article similar to it on Tuesday ( granted, his is much better ).

The middle east continues to bubble over on to the fire. I can’t believe the Saudi’s sent troops into a neighboring country. The Shiites and the Sunnis are now settling up long suppressed differences ( speaking of which, I’m writing this on Tuesday lunch. No telling what is going to happen before it is posted ).

had an article on the huge surge of mail order
prep food
going out the door. Since last November he has been working non-stop to fill orders, hired help, increased minimums for an order. People are evidently big time panicking. I can’t imagine the surge just in the last few days. Let me put my official policy on mail order foods out there. After you have stockpiled your grains and legumes ( from the feed store and the grocery ) ammo and LED’s,
water filters
and other basics then and only then should you cautiously think about buying mail order food. It is for luxuries, not for basics. Granted, if that is the only source for you for wheat ( if nothing else, for sprouting ) then you have little choice. But my question is, why are all these fools rushing out to spend lots of money, for overly processed foods? Even worse, why are they WAITING for it? If your supplier can’t ship it out soonest, you are waiting for a shipment that could get disrupted. Or never arrive ( such as if the
Ring Of Fire
let loose, or a nuclear war was started ). I understand that the only advice given by Yuppie Survivalists is to buy number ten cans of storage food. But isn’t the most novice prepper, panicker, stockpiler or survivalist aware that every town and neighborhood already has their own food store? One where you can go and cash and carry, no waiting required. If you are panicking about food storage, why aren’t you just going to the grocery store? To be clear, I’m not talking about the long term prepper that wants to spend the extra money for a buy-once-and-forget-it. Some things such as
instant milk
are expensive enough that spending extra for the long term packaging makes sense. It is cheaper to buy it once a decade than to replace the cardboard packaged type every other year. Where else can you get dried eggs?

Grains first for calories. Legumes second for protein. Then, better foods as both luxury items, taste fatigue items and increased nutrition. But they aren’t a necessity that should be bought first. If I couldn’t buy any wheat, I sure wouldn’t spend a thousand bucks on freeze dried dinners, I would go to the grocery store and buy white flour, white rice and dry beans ( with perhaps some instant potatoes ). If I couldn’t find canned dried milk through the mail for immediate delivery, I would either buy the short term grocery unit or be content with beans for protein. You can buy all you need for a basic food stockpile at the grocery. Don’t panic that the mail order houses are out.

Anyone can submit a guest article. No minimum word length, no writing skill necessary ( just get the idea across ). You retain copyright ( this must be your original writing ) and I’ll just use the once. I’ve yet to turn down an article, just don’t use the N Bomb or libel another that can sue me. Send by e-mail ( please, label as “guest article” so I can find it easily later ). Payment will be your removal from my enemies list.

Please support Bison by buying through the Amazon links in each article. You can purchase anything, not just the linked item. Enter Amazon through my item link and then go to whatever other item you desire. As long as you don’t leave Amazon until after the order is placed, I get credit for your purchase. Thank you.

Hey Jim, enjoy your vacation. Say hi to the Testicle Squeezing Assholes for me since I have quit flying.
purchase a twenty gallon metal trash can with matching lid; double line with heavy plastic trash bags.
fill it with dried beans, rice, bags of oatmeal, packets of dry milk, beef jerky, ectra..
add some bay leaves, twist seal the bags; with plastic food wrap and duct tape seal the lid and can.
done this twice so far, soon be a third time..

Agreed. The issue is not thinking of options. "I need long-term storage food... I heard I can order #10 cans from place X. That is my only strategy."
I've packed my own food from the grocery store, from bulk grain sources, ordered some things on-line, etc. It wasn't genius on my part, it was just that I was spending X dollars per month on food storage and looking for the best bargains. If one source didn't have what I was looking for, I would find another source with something I could afford and made for good storage. A modest amount of flexibility goes a long way.
Or you can just try to spend your way out of the situation by going to the places with huge mark-ups. They always seem to have stuff in stock.
Enjoy your break and recharge your batteries! I don't want you to burn out on us...I want to read your gloating when your "crazy" ideas come to pass.
Went to Sams Club the other day, for $100, got 50lbs pinto beans,50lbs rice, 50lbs flour, 50lbs sugar and a jar of bay leaves. 200 lbs of food for a hundred bucks. Try doing that with mail order anything !
Yuppie scum deserve what they get !
I just bought 800 pounds of wheat in #10 cans at a Mormon Cannery. Total cost was $400.00 Fifty cents a pound is just slightly more than feed wheat in a paper sack and it is already packaged for long term storage. I think I understand how Lord Bison feels as I scream " Get thee to a Mormon Cannery and save a shitload of money" If you act now, you can get some cheap food before the Cannery is overwhelmed and limits sales to card carrying Mormons only ( HINT, HINT )

HEY DAKIN-great post today, enjoyed your blog(I can't just tell you when it sucks ass!)Enjoy your weekend with your family! take it easy brother!
You just don't get it.
#10 cans of freeze dried meat & TVP are a protein source and the main ingredient of a meal to be supplemented by the far more common, more easily procured rice/pasta/beans/grains. The last four will be available far longer than the ultra long lasting,(10 to 20 years)less bulky/condensed, dried meats & tvp.
As an example, I bought some freeze dried meat and TVP online from Costco last week, and going back to their website yesterday I noted that ...IT WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.
Rice and beans are readily available and in the scheme of things... not even that expensive.
However, eaten by themselves they are quite bland.
Doesn't the mail order food have a shelf life of only 36 months.
Thought this was going to be about finding a wife after I saw the headline.
What a let down, oh well ~ story of my life. Maybe I can find my ball and chain while at the grocer stocking up on flour, beans, & rice.
For the prepper, it's hard to beat 4lb foil covered boxes of dry milk. The stuff will last a long time and in my opinion, as long as canned dry milk. Just keep in a cool basement or such. The advantage of cans is protection from rodents and ruggedness of container. I am not sure about longevity of waxed boxes of milk but I bet they are pretty good. There is about 640 grams of protein per 4lb box of milk. I get "Friendly Farms" from a nearby grocers for 11.99 a box. Far cheaper than the canned stuff on the web.
Peanut butter also keeps well (at least 4 years in my experience) and one jar is about as good as 2lbs of wheat and has more protein. You get your fats, protein, and carbohydrates all in one shot.
What ever the food choice, some is better than none, from the store or from the net. You are right, though, the local grocery store is a good bet and mostly cheaper.
An option some of you may or may not know,....Farm supply stores...ie; Feed and seed!
There you can purchase sacks (100lb) of wheat,..oats,...corn,..most any type of grain in season and some not in season,.....its the same crap the food giants use to make their stuff with. Yes its animal feed,....same shit you eat but in a different bag. Yes,..it may have some harvesting trash in it,...but you gonna clean it anyway right??
Dont have a higer and holier than thou attitude when it comes to food sources.
Animal feed and Human consumption grains come from the same grainery,...tractor or combine,..same burlap sack,..and the same field!!! Best dollar for dollar buy around!!!!
Got that grinder yet?
