RIMFIRE SNIPER
Oh
Lord Baby Jesus
have a little friggin mercy! It’s one of those weekends mated with one of those Mondays to produce a hybrid foul creature. We go to drive into work on Friday ( the wife is volunteering on Fridays to help file paperwork in the office, and etcetera, and then we do all our errands/chores after work- I get one less day peddling but use no more gas ), and it seems that our
permafrost
had thawed six inches down. The ground seemed solid, but when I went to drive away the truck sank down to its axle. Great. I peddled into work, no big deal there except I was a half hour late for my Internet time, as one of the biggest news stories of the
apocalypse
happens. Which actually put me in a pretty good mood despite the truck. One giant step closer to the stew pot, which, granted, I have mixed feelings about. Should I root for chaos and violence? Or should I root for business as usual? It’s a conundrum.
Business as usual
allows lots of good books to be delivered to my door, but a collapse means I can finally go medieval on all the asshats that so desperately deserve it. Anyway, I couldn’t help myself and had a big sloppy grin on my face at the prospect of financial meltdown ( I don’t honestly want any bad to happen to the average Joe, Japanese or otherwise, but I AM rooting for much pain and suffering to all politicians, lawyers, bankers and the ex-wife ). I wasn’t even too pissed about having to come home and futz for a few hours with the truck. But then, after six hours of exhausting work trying to extract the truck Saturday I was in a thoroughly nasty mood. I got the truck towed out Sunday, no charge other than a few hours babysitting in trade, but the day was shot. Behind on the writing ( now would be a good time to send in a guest article so I’m covered next weekend going to visit my daughter ), damn daylight savings time, my continuity screwed. And today on Monday everyone is either in a bad mood or expecting me to work. Damn them all. But at least I got a good article idea.

A loyal minion ( and, again, for the umpteenth time to placate the idiot comment writers, this is my
term of endearment
- if you don’t like it join the clueless at another site that won’t take the chance of offending anyone ) wrote about the
rimfire
. Basically, I was selling it “short” ( get it? Rimfire short or long rifle- sorry, I liked it ). As a wayward youth, said correspondent had used the shot placement on the water to learn how to get his hits out to five hundred yards. I honestly didn’t think a 22 could get out that far. Now, before you sputter and spew and act all butt hurt that I don’t advocate an
AR-15
that costs a grand and is so overly complicated that it makes a modern motor vehicle with two hundred computer chips in it look as simple as a stone hammer and will act all contrite and behave itself at the shooting range but as soon as you take it out into the field and don’t clean it every hour it stops working, we are all about simple and cheap here at the Bison Compound. Since most other firearms are neither, the rimfire rifle deserves another look ( I’ve talked about rimfire sniping in heavy woods before, not about extreme range firing- yeh, I’m reaching for material here ). Now, I can’t give you any advice on scopes. I’ve never used them so much for shot placement as for just being able to see the target. On each firearm I learn how high to hold the crosshairs over the target for a hit ( remember, we are talking about pie plate accuracy here, not fractions of an inch ). Which I’m sure is a terrible way to do it. I’m sure others have great advice on
MOA scopes
or whatever. I’m a novice shooter and don’t pretend otherwise. So we’ll just talk in generalities here.

Obviously, any shot that hits after medical care is available is an invitation to trouble. As the new audio tapes that was conveniently released last week shows, while appearing to be okay, had the
Secret Service
not taken
Reagan
to the hospital first thing the .22 in him could have killed him. Don’t sell the small hunk of lead short. Granted, at five hundred yards the energy left in one might not be much. But since you are so far away you should be pretty safe from most of the idiots firing back at you with their AR’s. Even a slight wound that doesn’t immediately incapacitate the enemy might eventually kill him. I’m not saying knock down power isn’t important. But if you can’t do much more than arm yourself with a rimfire rifle ( IF you can get a powerful pistol to guard against close threats where knock down is critical ) than not all is lost. If you got an old propane tank ( yes, jerk-off, an empty one ) and put it out at a hundred yards and practiced hitting that bad boy, then kept moving it out farther and practicing, I can’t imagine it would take that many dollars worth of ammo to get a feel for hitting at extreme ranges. You have a man torso size target, so the realism is there. And you can hear the hit, so there is no going to look at the
target
or buying special colored targets. You do need a way to gauge your hits. Out here in the desert I could go by the dust eruptions, and as mentioned before you could use a body of water ( such as trying to hit rocks sticking out of the water ). The great thing about the rimfire is the ability to keep the target acquired during the shot.

I know that you are all getting pumped to go out and get a
Rugar 10/22
and put a few hundred bucks into customizing it, but please slow down. A bolt action is much better for accuracy. It is also cheaper and there are plenty of old junkers out there for cheap that just need a bit of wood conditioner and blue touch up. The great thing about this idea is you only need a $75 rifle, $30 in a scope and mount and a few bucks in ammo. You can plink all day getting the hang of long range shooting. Why not learn sniping through experience rather than by spending a fortune on equipment( I’m not comparing the effectiveness of a “real” sniper with a home grown rimfire sharpshooter, just giving you a realistic option )?

A bolt-action, rimfire rifle would be my first choice if I had to start all over again with firearm purchases, followed closely by a potent handgun that can be kept on the hip at all times. In terms of defensive use, most people do not want to get shot with anything, period. Defending yourself against the drug addled hell-bent-for-destruction hulk that seems to dominate internet discussions seems to me to be pretty rare in real life. The rimfire rifle's ability to procure small game, if available, along with its low cost makes it #1 on my list of firearms.

The .17 is also an excellent rimfire option. $150 for a new bolt-action. Nearly three times the range of a .22 but still dirt cheap ammo.
Ol' Remus had high praise for you again in today's latest Woodpile Report. He didn't mention your hair though.
Look at the bullet drop:
http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htm
However, even at 200' your 22lr likely has more energy then most round fired from a pistol at 10'.
And since the recoil from firing the gun (energy at point blank range) did not knock over the shooter, I am confused by what you mean by knock down power.
Well said - no one will want to get shot with ANYTHING, especially after SHTF so rimfire will work okay. Just don't expect instant results, which with even centerfires, isn't always the case anyway.
One of my favorite 'free' targets is the ubiquitous gallon water or milk jug. Some water or dirt in bottom 1/3 keeps it anchored even in a stiff wind.
When it comes to long range shooting, doping the wind is important. Especially with the rimfire rounds. But it is something you can afford to practice with shooting a long time, and won't hurt your shoulder or ears much (still wear those plugs / muff though).
Irons work, but scopes make it easier. You can write a 'cheat sheet' and tape it on your rifle for quick reference, but even then, the direction of wind (especially crosswind) will always make you do some mental math before you shoot.
Fun though, lots of fun.
Great article Lord B - It is only overshadowed by your lustrous locks. I have a two drive drive pickup with non locking differential. In plain english, I can get the bitch stuck in a mud puddle. I carry a farm jack and some plywood. Jack up the rear wheels, put plywood over the ruts, and go. Harbor freight sells a cheap Chinese copy of a farm jack. It lifts up to 6000 pounds and is super useful. As far as rimfire sniping is concerned, think about an intentional gutshot! With no bones to stop it, that little .22 slug will punch a hole in the intestines, contaminating the abdominal cavity with fecal matter. Sounds like a recipe for a horribly pinful, lingering death from infection unless you have modern medicine. In the old West, the underpowered .41 rimfire Derringer round was feared as a horrible killer. The slug had just enough velocity to get into the chest cavity and not exit. Combined with the unsterile surgery techniques of the period, a gutshot was a guaranteed way to die screaming and begging for a headshot to end it.

Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed with a .22 and last time I checked he was still dead so it can do the job with proper bullet placement. And a bolt can shoot any .22 you find from shorts to mini-mags.

Mr. Dakin,
Just like the Lee-Enfield, those 22LR rifles are durable. I am using a single-shot .22 rifle to introduce shooting with a scope to friends and family. The rifle is over 60 years old, and still shoots like a charm.
The scope is a plain Jane 4X power with crosshairs that I picked up for less than $25.
Plus, it'll probably be around after I pass it on to someone else.
If your thinking about getting a Rugar 10/22, make sure you try out the trigger. They have the worst trigger ever made and a new after market one to fix it can cost more than you might want to spend. The factory trigger is very heavy, feels like sand paper and bad over travel. I would never have gotten one if I had known about them.
This is my term of endearment... ASSHOLE
trailer trash asshole thinking he's somebody.
"Minions" isn't a term of endearment any more than "nigger".
Got that....DICKHEAD... my "term of endearment" for you.
I don't get it. Is my term of endearment asshole or dickhead? Which one?
I have a Rossi .22 gallery gun.
(A copy of the Winchester 1890 gallery gun)The gun is lightweight and takes down via a bolt on the side of the receiver making it possible to fit in a pack. With CCI .22 CB mini's (A light loaded .22 short) the gun is virtually silent!
I used to have an old Remington bolt action single shot .22, best
.22 I ever had. Even after my father gave me his 10/22 with the stipulation that I give the Remington to my brother, that Remington was the first gun I would reach for.
Jim, as a loyal minion of long standing and one who understands where you are coming from, I would like to request that in the future you NOT publish the rantings of ASSHOLES like Anon 7:49. I know you want to be fair but really, you are just encouraging DICKHEADS like him (I assume but it reads like the work of some liberal bitch). So next time, either hit delete or arange some place we can meet this person.

Dang anon 7:49, slow your roll baby, your hearts gonna 'splode into teeny tiny pieces.
Minion - person who listens to and follows advice given by another. Just a label - you don't have to feel obligated to wear it.
As to terms of endearment above, I've been called both by my charming wife in the past so it must be a good thing :^)
I vote dickhead. You were in the Army after all. Now if you had been a MARINE you would qualify for asshole.
SemperFido
Anon 7:49 is a pussy. Jim is not an asshole, Jim is a dick and, "...Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes: assholes that just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is: they fuck too much or fuck when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. But sometimes, pussies can be so full of shit that they become assholes themselves... because pussies are an inch and half away from ass holes. I don't know much about this crazy, crazy world, but I do know this: If you don't let us fuck this asshole, we're going to have our dicks and pussies all covered in shit!"
Hey take that back! my son is a marine.
While I agree with you that a rimfire makes a great gun for most uses, I would still prefer an AR or AK if I was in an assault situation.
As an owner of both a Marlin 880 SQ .22 "sniper" rimfire and a AR15 (16" bull barrel and 3-9 scope - it's practical not TACTICOOL) there is no comparison between the two. the 880 is a nail driver out to about 200 yards, and the AR is good till about 500.
If you don't like the AR, then you won't like my next suggestion either; get an AR and invest in a CMMG .22 conversion. This way you get the best of both worlds, you train with one trigger, one scope, and one system.
