depression by design

DEPRESSION BY DESIGN

Matthew Simmons is well known to Peak Oilers. He’d been hootin and hollerin for quite some time about the immanent Big Flush at the end of the age of cheap and abundant petroleum. Not only did Matt ( I feel familiar enough with him to be on an informal first name basis, mainly because he is dead and can’t object- and his death had no sinister implications as far as I’m concerned despite several stage whispers to the contrary as that boy was obviously a boozer as anyone watching video interviews could tell- but also because he seemed a righteous doomer dude ) write the book that made him famous, Twilight In The Desert, but he was also an advisor to both Bush and Cheney far before that. You can say a lot of bad things about Bush- moron, simpleton, Jesus Freak, dumber than a box of rocks, put into office by behind the scenes folks, a friggin idiot, dumbass walking- but at least he was controlled by folks who knew the value of geopolitical control of oil as the basis for American power. And Cheney, as evil as they come, more evil, manipulative and sinister with connections directly into the Dark One’s dominion than even ex-wife number two ( which pains me to admit that anyone at all was worse than she ), at least had the good graces to shoot a lawyer in the ass. And both had the smarts ( okay, Cheney was smart enough to tell Bush to shut up and listen ) to seek the counsel of Matt Simmons, a foremost energy expert.

*

As you are pondering whether or not it is a good idea to buy the basic premise of his book-Saudi Arabia has vastly overstated its reserve figures for oil and already four or five years ago it was showing signs of imminent field decline ( and remember, older fields can lose as much as 90% of its production in as little as four or five years after peaking )- go ahead and think about this. In 2003 Matt gave a talk in which he stated the world as a whole has no way to conduct business outside of cheap and abundant oil. There was no Plan B. It was simple. There was no where near enough infrastructure for other energy sources. The only alternative was shrinking the economy. An economic depression was the only way to stretch out the time of survival. Remember, this was in 2003. Right now it sounds pretty obvious, but back then it was a pretty revolutionary thing to say. And as the housing bubble unfolded with its illusion of wealth it must have seemed like ol’ Matt was as stupid as Bush. But Matt was spot on, wasn’t he? It is almost as if this current depression was by design.

It is pretty tempting to say that all this financial manipulation finally got out of control. That you can only play that game for so long. But financial manipulation has been going on since the Federal Reserve bank was founded ( it obviously went back further, the North Industrialists instigating the War Of Northern Aggression to create a source of colonial cheap raw material and captive consumers, but that was children’s marbles compared to this very adult game ). Do you honest Injun really think we entered WWI just out of a sense of decency and democratic ideals? You are so cute when you’re innocent and trusting. WWII was about saving the economy from itself ( the 29 crash was caused if not desired by the Fed ) and global control. As far back as the recession of 57 the bankers, who controlled the government by this time if not long ago, decided to stop investing in the US and go abroad for better profits and cheaper labor. The 70’s oil shocks just stuck a fork in that cooked pig. Granted, despite the fifty year long decline in American standards of living, the general population has benefited to some degree. We might be paupers with a few rich controllers pulling the strings, but at least we have the basics to survive on ( which is more than a lot of our colonized brethren in other countries can claim ). But it does need to be acknowledged that we, the general population, are only INCIDENTALLY enriched to whatever small degree by the elite banker manipulations.

*

We could hope and pray that this time around it is just another planned reduction in our wealth. Such as when the bankers manipulated a taxpayer bailout from foreign defaults and the bankers later profited without payback. Such as the bailout two years ago. Such as the savings and loan fiasco. And etcetera. But, even giving credit where credit is due, the manipulators doing a wonderful job ruining economy after economy ( Russia, Thailand, etc. ) for the sake of themselves, the end of oil, cheap and abundant oil, is the end of that racket. Not that the bankers won’t survive until the end- they are the cockroaches of the human race, able to survive dinosaur killing asteroid strikes and extra lethal doses of radiation- because they still control events to a large degree. But stones only hold so much blood. You can’t disregard the laws of physics no matter how good you are. Even living in grinding poverty is preferable to living through civilization collapse.

*

My point is that this time around, it isn’t just a planned reduction in wealth to enrich our masters. This time around it is a planned reduction in ALL our wealth to enable our masters to survive as long as possible. Yes, the ‘07/‘08 crash was planned, or at least encouraged ( it’s hard to argue otherwise unless a deliberate credit bubble in the housing market was just a slightly embarrassing mistake ), but there is no recovery this time around. As pathetic or timid as any recovery might have been, it is still better than this free fall. Don’t let the fact that we aren’t shooting each other amidst the radioactive rubble fool you. All wealth is being destroyed, from civil servant pensions to house equity ( even paid for houses will be lost among the local government desperate attempts at survival as they jack up illusionary values ). Just because we aren’t finished off doesn’t mean it isn’t around the corner.

*

Listen to the energy expert. The only way to postpone the collapse caused by declining energy supplies is an economic depression. He warned us of this almost eight years ago. Six years ago he warned us about Saudi Arabian oil production. His economic depression is already here. How close is the 90% reduction in oil from the middle east‘s premier producer? That wouldn’t just be a depression, that would be the Dark Ages.

When Oh When are you going to change over to WordPress? Blogger is the most unfunctional, evil, stupid-ass, blogging software there is. 13-year-old little assholes who get around by skateboard use Blogger.

OK that over, and I really need to insert it into each post ...... I've been watching the real estate bubble since 03, maybe since 02. There a few sites devoted to it, and the big question was, When will it burst? The saying at the time was that bubbles tend to go on just a bit longer than you think possible then, POP!

Indeed, the dot-com crash was considered just a blip, just a misallocation of investment.

The idea of Peak oil was real fringe material. I actually discovered it because I got into the anti-car movement, now that's really fringe! By that time it was 2005 and the price of gas was going up. Simmons' book was one of the very few out there. A Depression to spread out the crash sounded logical.

In my own life, I thought I had time. Time to pay off debt I'd foolishly incurred, time to streamline the running of my small business (treadmill), time.... somehow..... I had no vacations at all. I didn't have time to sit down and think and realize I needed to turn full on Doomer survivalist nutbag like, Now.

Because when my own world crashed, when our economy first got a sniffle in 2007, it was like Fly, meet Swatter. No gentle ramp-down, I was effectively homeless in two months.

The decline in easy-to-get oil could cause a lot of Fly, meet Swatter for a lot of us. Prepare.

Yes, Lord Bison, things ain't quite lookin' up these days 'round the globe, 'twould be known as "ye truthe, you cain't handle ye truthe!"

Pretty much, you're spot on, minus a few posts here and there of blathering and wandering, but you do manage to go back on the reservation and continue the literary progression that rounds off my really good cups of coffee.

As the collapse-apocalypse slowly grinds on, mix in a few black swans, fiat dollars, shrinking harvests, and inflation-that-you-can't-hide, this thing is turning out to be a fun way to spend adulthood.

At this point, if you haven't gotten serious about putting anything in ye 'olde closet besides porn and lube, then you have little time to squirrel shit away for the future with your declining, shrinking, worthless dollars.

As you acquire the new necessities in the correct order, a little forethought should be given:

1st, food. Long term, doesn't go bad, full of calories and fat, shit to fill your belly with. Cheap, large quantities. Forget the healthy, good for you stuff. You need the calories. Next, better add water in sufficient quantities, or you are dead. If you can't get this category in full here, then quit now. You won't make it.

2nd, shelter. Paid for car, tent, tarp, and some decent sleeping bags. No use eating high-calorie food without hunkering in your new, home-sweet-home to keep the freezin cold or sunburn out. You will die if your soft white puffy ass is in the elements too long.

3rd step. Still here? Well, no survivalist is without a weapon of some sort. Pick something to defend your calorie and tent pile with. Be it a battle-axe, crossbow, pellet rifle, slingshot, baseball bat, and oh yes, my nipples gettin' tingly here, something that is made of metal and goes "boom" loudly. Whatever the case, better have whatever makes your wood woody, in sufficient quantities 'cause you won't be able to get more. Forget tradin' for this kinda stuff with your declining calorie pile (#1 above) since no one will trade for neither come said doomsee-day.

4th...this is in the event you understand 1,2,3 that will keep your sorry butt alive and stinky, 'but we aren't talking fit and healthy. Category 4 is medicine, toilet paper, quality tools, medkit, dogfood, extra clothing, shoes, and all that extra shitpile that will make living in oildown standable until the so-called "new economy" takes off...yeah right.

Notice...as a well learned minion pining and prostrating myself before the silken-haired lord of the great basin...I never mentioned gold, silver, or hoopla of that nature. It may hold value...but at least i can wipe my putrid ass with a fiat dollar. Put it this way...you're finally entering the great lord's compound, having made it across a thousand mile "lines of drift", and at the gate, you scrounge up your shiny metal to the guard.

Let's see...he's got a big decision to make. He's got #1, #2, and #3 taken care of. You don't. That's why you are at his compound. Most likely, you will hand over your PM's to him and be promptly shot after being raped. If you are pretty...well, there are considerations afterall.

Since I'm an ugly mofo, and this comment is approaching a respectable length, I'll just have to blather further later.

Spud makes a good point,

"In my mind there is little difference between a crackhead welfare case and a right wing capitalist."

I rather like that. A small biz person is really not a capitalist.
But think of big agrabiz, the food store and food stamps, the big landlord and section 8, the home builder and toxic taxpayer mortgages, on an on.

The two sides of the coin sure hate those on the outside of thier games,
