MORE SEMI SLOP
Let’s all give a big wet sloppy kiss to Herr Ure over at
http://www.urbansurvival.com/ for alerting us to the
Petkau Effect
. If you want more info you can of course Wiki it, but the short version is that small doses of radiation over a long period of time, even very small amounts, are just as harmful as a huge dose over a short period of time. This is especially pertinent as the media is awash with feel good douche bag asshat monkey sodimizers trying to sell the crap that Japan poses no threat to you since nature is full of radiation. Isn’t arsenic natural? Listen, I’m sticking to my story that the Jap
nuke disaster
is nothing more than a repeat of the 1950’s above ground tests. It won’t kill us outright, there isn’t a whole lot we can do about it, and in the end we all get more cancers and die earlier. No big deal. By the time I’m sixty, if I die from cancer it will be better than ending up in the stewpot. What irritates me is the evil whores that sell their souls to keep the public in ignorance. And speaking of Ure’s site, do you ever wonder about the name? It has nothing to do with surviving in an urban environment, per se. The author advocates rural property and big gardens. But his last name, Ure, and UReBAN Survival. Get it? That’s got to be the reason behind the name, although I’ve never asked. And, unless my memory is going, I swear I can’t ever remember one damn person ever, EVER, never, asking me why I named my periodical Bison. Best Internet Survivalist Online Newsletter. I came up with that all by myself and no one has hastily prostrated themselves before me in worship and feelings of unworthiness. Damn ingrates.

I know, I know. You get tired of the same old crap here. But sometimes I just can’t stop berating you on the same topics. For instance, I feel the urgent need to yell at you for not living on junk land. Again. I can’t promise a forthcoming article, but be prepared for it all the same. You have been warned. When I feel like I’m being ignored I tend to get louder and louder and repeat myself. Kind of like yelling louder at foreigners when they don’t understand English. Surely the increased volume will break down those
communication barriers
. People are constantly telling with me that, yes, my hair is great, but I’m an ignorant slut for not recognizing how superior semi auto guns are to bolt actions. So, once again we step into the breech ( pun intended ) and discus logistics. Ever since firearms became practical on a widespread scale, man has been surrounded by a sea of plentiful recourses. When you live on a lush tropical island, do you worry about water? Of course not, you are surrounded by it ( for our purposes here I’m assuming low
population
, almost daily rain- as apposed to monsoon seasons- and no pollution ). When you live in the desert, you don’t worry too much about wasting ground cover. There’s much more where that came from. When a resource is never ending, you simply do not conserve it. That is just human nature. Kind of like new apps always being one step behind bandwidth. With few exceptions, the victorious military powers of their day never conserved firepower. They might have strained themselves logistically to supply a never ending amount of powder, but doctrine ALWAYS dictated mass firepower.
*
For that we can most likely thank Gustovus Adolfus ( spelling? ). A brilliant Swedish leader, ol’ GA was responsible for a great many strategic breakthroughs of his day. That Sweden expanded at all was the result of this one man. One innovation was to lighten the bullet and make reloading much quicker of shoulder arms ( in essence totally redesigning the rifle to conform to his vision ) with the result of mass infantry volley. There have been few true geniuses in military thinking. True breakthroughs that were so innovative they were the new standard forever more. I don’t study much militarily pre-gunpowder, but I would say
Genghis
was one. Mobility and mass firepower afterward never matched his practice, even with the Oil Age. Not that his standard hasn’t been ignored. It just can’t be matched since he had no logistic train to speak of compared to the norm. And the other genius was Gustovus. We still worship his example. But the sad fact is that the ability to supply that kind of strategy is fast coming to an end. The
bell curve
always has a historical maximum before the decline. Just because we are at the pinnacle of munitions usage doesn’t mean it is sustainable. Energy and ore depletion are directly tied to munitions availability. You have already seen the heyday of cheap, accurate, readily available modern ammunition. One day none will be available at all. Oh, there will still be very expensive ammo. Or ammo wildly swinging in accuracy. Or sporadically supplied. But not the kind of ammunition needed to practice modern warfare.

Semi-automatic
weapons are not at all the marvels we portray them to be. They use simply mechanisms developed one hundred years ago. The miracle was our modern logistical magic powered almost exclusively by surplus cheap petroleum. That is over and done with. Stick a friggin fork in it. If we are lucky, the near future will have firearms available for warfare. But they won’t be the spray and pray semi’s that were 100% reliant on cheap power and a fully developed infrastructure to feed them their ammunition. It isn’t necessary to expend much brainpower on the end of cheap oil, the logical consequences. All that is needed is your ability to recognize the barrier of discomfort avoidance you yourself erect. Even if you stockpile ten thousand rounds, by practicing suppressive fire tactics you will run out quick enough. The trick will of course be to avoid the run down of their ammunition. But after that
bolt actions
, owned by those truly recognizing the limitless value of every single round, will rule the battlefield. All that is needed is the tactics to go with it. And tactics are cheaper than ammunition. Although I wonder how available that mental ability is.

I urge you to store wheelweights (Throw out the shiny zinc weights. They ruin the mix.), invest in bullet moulds, and bottom pour pot and dipper; and study
these TB2K posts re shooting cast bullet loads.

There are generalizations, which are a good way to pass along rules-of-thumb. Then, there are over-generalizations.
I still don't understand why you equate the firearm mechanism (semi-auto vs. bolt action) with the tactic used by the person (spray and pray suppressive fire vs. controlled, aimed fire at what you can hit). This seems like an over-generalization.
Yes, I see people at the rifle range with semi-autos shooting them off like a string of firecrackers and rarely hitting their target. I also see plenty of people there with semi-autos practicing controlled, aimed fire. You can cycle a semi-auto much like a bolt gun with a little tweak, which I know you are aware of. Why not have the option of a faster follow-up shot if your life depended on it? When the ammo gets to be crappy re-loads with suspect specs, just tweak the gas system and go to manual cycling. You can have the best of both worlds.
The cartridge that made the semi-automatic possible comes from canning technology. Once canning became possible they almost immediately turned it to making cartridges.
Coal-steam power was around but it pre-dates oil.
It is so low tech that I suspect it will be one of the technologies we can hold onto.
Bison as acronym? You crafty fellow! I thought it had something to do with stubbornness...keep up the good work!
Just saw the new price list for the LDS cannery--effective April 4th. HUGE price increases across the board. And this is a non-profit, run mostly by volunteers outfit.
Wheat 25# was $7.65 now $11.45
Apple Slices 15# was $60.45 now $72.55
Dried Milk 25# was $41.65 now $47.20
Sugar 25# was $17.35 now $21.15
Macaroni 20# was $16.50 now $20.25
Flour 25# was $10.30 now $13.30
Rice 25# was $10.00 now $13.85
Oatmeal 25# was $9.85 now $15.95
Pintos 25# was $17.45 now $18.55
Black beans 25# was $12.55 now $16.00
I could go on but the price increase seem to be averaging 20% +/- on all of their items.
I've been going to the cannery for almost 20 years and this is the largest across the board price increase that I can remember.
Use to be that some prices would go up and some would actually go down. But EVERY food item went up this time.
Just think of what's coming to the for-profit stores like WalMart.
I've also heard that in some places the LDS canneries are limiting access to non members.
Hope all your minions have listened to you and have their food storage.

I thought Bison stood for Big I spewing off Nonsense or the size of testicles...........never mind.
I went over to urban survival and discovered I lacked the vocabulary to comprehend the subtle nuances of superior brains trying to out dazzle each other.
Apparently, the majority of humanity are reptile stemmed monkey brains(see Buddhism).
They are overpopulating the earth as a result of animal lust and using up ever decreasing resources grasping and clinging with their little monkey paws.
But don't worry, we are experiencing a shifting paradigm. I will now light my pipe and strike a pose.
If the fall of civilization accomplishes nothing else at least the intellectuals will get a chance to stroke each others(READERS CHOICE).
It is a lot "Harder"(repressed giggles in the background)to judge intellect compared to whipping it out and getting a yardstick. Notice I didn't say ruler.
One intelligent person can contribute a lot(Bison).
A room full of smart people is a circle jerk of brain cells.
Bison, please quit playing with your bolt action on the internet, your embarrassing yourself.
the rat
BISON?
I thought is was from the hairy hump on your back! (everyone enjoys your magnificent hair...)
Perhaps it's from the fact that you started writing in the BISONtenial years?
Big tough fella like you couldn't have been the BI SON of the family!
But really...
It's probabely cause Bisons are so rare and taste so good!
...And the only safe way to shoot one, is from a fast train! Chasing them off cliffs is hard and dangerous work!
Ok, since "we" (as if I speak for any others than myself) look to you for guidence as - one of your many of your faceless chelas, I would figure you woulda told us if you wanted us to know! Like on your "about" page?

Leave your semis at home boys and grab your swords! Riders! Riders!
The logistics of Ghengis was pillage of the conquored (also known as robbing the dead). They slashed they way into history. Bloody gore.No semis there!
No "If I though enough rocks at them maybe they'll die!" They ran up to folks and slashed them!
But I guess that's what bayonets are for...
I don't give a shit if you post this are not! I think it's funny!
I got my wheat! And bayonet!
The ideal situation is to always come back with all ammunition intact.
Else have one kill per round expended.
Supplies in general are never endless, this would be the ideal matra of a true conservative.
Liberals would be spray and pray...
Spud – all I will say is bullets can and do go through more than one person. :)
Anon 8:40 – yes, a combat veteran can be expected to conserve ammo; if this is your first time being shot at you will be amazed how quickly that bolt locks back on empty. If you train you can cycle a bolt reasonably quickly. Men who will blindly charge a machine gun nest will cower in fear if a comrade falls for every gunshot heard. Think about it. Practice.
Vlad, every place I’ve been hoping to get wheel weights there is already someone buying them.
Jim, I know I've whined before about this and I know how you feel but if the guys who criticize you can not be intelligent or funny please delete them as I am sensitive. ;)
