offensive imperative

OFFENSIVE IMPERATIVE

A combination of 80% laziness, 5% vacation and 15% intermittent rain postponed my trench digging for three weeks. If you’ll reach back into the dusty unused cavern of your memory you will remember that I got my truck bogged down because the ground thawed out the week between trips into town. The truck looked secure resting on a false layer of topsoil over quicksand, but as soon as forward motion was attempted all was lost in a spasm of remorse and fear. But even as I kept putting off digging “just one more day” I knew that April Fools Day was absolutely the last possible day I could start digging if I wanted to get done before summer started. Well, this fool got digging and I finally made the breakthrough of digging my starting hole down to four feet over the weekend. Now, instead of having to laboriously dig straight down ( the top foot is easy, the second foot difficult but not impossible, the third foot is harder than concrete and the forth almost sandy and loose ) I can go from above and dig into the side, undercutting that third foot. This is much easier. And even though I know in my heart I am a overoptimistic fool, I’m going to try to achieve three feet a day. We’ll see- expect far too many updates and overly long and winded complaints to follow.

*

A minion graciously wrote some time back ( I started digging on Halloween, went about a month, then pretty much stopped until now- so it was sometime in the last five months ) and described his attempts at earth tubes. He made a huge circle of his pipe, in effect taking cold indoor air and sending it down about three hundred feet of tubes back indoors. Why take butt ass cold air from the outdoors and try to heat it when you can take already heated air from inside, right? Well, you do need a fan to circulate the air. And you must capture the condensation ( which is actually a benefit ). So, while superior in results, might expose you to mechanical failure down the road. A lot of parts, pumps, electrical generation and batteries. Once the batteries die, you can’t pump the air come night or clouds. And, most importantly, it would require a HECK of a lot more hand digging on my part. I’m opting for the butt simple option. If I notice a marked difference in temperature I’ll expand the length and double the pipe. In his book, “The Earth Sheltered Solar Greenhouse BookMike Oehler mentions a greenhouse at 8,000 feet that had a base temperature of 52 degrees from a twelve inch pipe buried eight foot deep running for two hundred feet. Obviously my four foot deep four inch pipe running one hundred feet is both much cheaper and surely won’t deliver as good of performance. But if I do two pipes and double the length it might come close ( especially factoring in the less severe winters ). All from a straight pipe with no fans ( I might have to switch to summer cooling by extending the intake above the indoor outflow level, I’ll need to research that ).

*

I’m sure I’ve talked about this before but odds are it was a long time ago and nobody paid any attention. The imperative to be offensive after the collapse. The large failure in genteel gardening lifestyles, your basic “grow your own food and all will be well” so reminiscent of articles from Greer, Backwoods Home Magazine and even the newest and much admired book “Surviving Off Off Grid” is that it all starts and ends with food production. But all these publications are guilty of ignoring survivalism in their quest for agrarian bliss. Their food production operates in a vacuum, ignoring human nature, government, warfare and desperation. In their attainment of food security they ignore basic security. Nobody will simply leave you alone to grow your crops in peace. Even your own governments troops might steal your food to protect you. And, I hate to break this to you, my apologies in advance for taking a big squishy stinky on your militia masturbation fantasies, having a semi-automatic plastic carbine will also not magically save you from attackers.

*

Semi-automatics aside, I do have to give credit where due, and commend Rawles on this basic realization ( despite our differences in tactics, or even recognition that females will make adequate warriors to defend the homestead-their historical effectiveness is closely tied to modern arms in limited circumstances ). I don’t think modern military tactics translate over to the survivalist, not even the survivalist military, but at least the basic realization exists that military force must be projected to defend the farm.

*

The difference being, a heavy religious organization that allows scripture to interfere with strategy is going to set itself up for failure. Just the charitable giving clause itself is sheer madness from a military perspective. If the apostles Grand Army Of The Lord realize soon enough that charity is tied into subjugation then they are going to be okay. But if they go by the hungry needing rather than the security need of the core group they fail without a shot being fired. My rather cynical thoughts are that the church fathers, be they in Utah with affiliations with the LDS or in Idaho with some more craphouse rat crazy sect, will quickly receive divine guidance that only the just are actually needy, and are given sufficient leeway to determine themselves who the just are. My guess would be that most of those fed are also quick converters and skilled at a needed profession. Anyway, I bring up the limitations of divine strategy to illustrate not that I think most Holy Roller Survivalists are weird but to point out that going offensive isn’t as easy as taking the fight to the enemy. Rather, you must be determined to do some pretty nasty things to achieve your defense. If you can’t make up your mind to act in an unpleasant manner, just go Amish and forsake violence, ready to become a serf.

*

This is why I preach the importance of tribes. You must grasp the fact that your tribe is the only worthy organization, and all others are sub-human. This is the only way you are going to survive in the brave new world. It doesn’t matter if the enemy tribe has old people, children or women. They are still the enemy. I’m not getting into the whole level/escalation of force or the conduct of war. Obviously, the worse you act the worse you will be treated if captured ( then we get into the whole non- proportional response to unacceptable conduct in war ). I’m saying that a time wasting discussion about the humane treatment of non-combatants, or the failure of individuals to adhere to a no-mercy attack, or whatever weakens your military ability ( usually by some damn religious nut ) cannot be tolerated. If your objective can only be achieved by brutal slaughter of innocents, you must do what is necessary. Actually, I might be too hard on the church run State. Rather than merciful and confused by scripture, they might indeed be ruthless to the unbelievers.

*

It just boils down to the fact that to survive, you must go offensive. And on the offensive you might have to be utterly ruthless. There are many grey areas in that black and white statement. War widows might actually find it merciful to be forcibly married to an enemy attacker. It is that or die of starvation after the village is burned down. War orphans assimilated into the attacking tribe will at least be spared the same fate ( and sometimes all that isn’t even about resources as about keeping the genetic lines fresh ). No one is going to sit around talking about humane or just or right or merciful. The talk will center on how to keep the tribe alive. By whatever means. Not that acting unfeeling or harsh will be easy ( at least the first time around ), but if you can steel yourself ahead of time for its necessity at least it ( or the lack of it ) won’t kill you.

*

You read stories of soldiers impaling babies, turn slightly pale and thank Baby Jesus that you live in a safe and sane world made possible by the never ending magically replenishing petroleum supply. But remember, this most likely wasn’t demons riding from Hell that did that. Rather, fathers themselves that would rather harden their hearts and do what was needed to feed their own. You have a lot of unlearning of propaganda to do in order to survive the end of this blessed age.

This atrocity happened to the unprepared and unaware in a time of peace and plenty. Unless you band together and are armed, alert, and very lucky you can expect to be robbed, raped and murdered after SHTF.

Strange that you, as an unbeliever, think the Church too soft. Most unbelievers attack the Church because of its perceived ruthless and bloodthirsty history. They argue and that if we were all atheists, we would embrace scientific rationalism and live in a Star-Trek like peace with advanced technology and no war, religion, etc.

I assure you that religion is more adaptable and evolutionary than most evolutionists, and that scriptural interpretation is sufficiently plastic to allow killing of other tribes. Hell, that's what the entire OT is about--no mercy for those who are not your "neighbors" (neighbor being a synonym for your tribe).

The NT is more universal in terms of who your "neighbor" is, but of course, that hasn't stopped various groups claiming to adhere to the NT from killing the heck out of other tribes (e.g. the Crusades). While there were economic and political factors involved in Crusading and Conquistador-ing, the fact remains that the NT can be interpreted to permit and even encourage such activities.

If history is any guide, religion will do just fine during the coming Dark Ages, as it survived the fall of the Roman empire, the Black Death, World Wars, and so on.

It would be a cruel irony indeed for those who live near LDS or Amish people to be turned upon by them when TSHTF. And I believe it's a very real possibility. I bet a Lee Enfield would keep 'em at bay though.

for the ground tubes.. during summer you need a point at the apex of your dwelling for hot air to escape - that causes a draft that draws in the cooler air from the ground tubes... it has to be the only egress for air as well...opening doors does not aid in air flow.

During winter you will sacrifice some of your warm indoor air to cause that draft.. but the overall stabilizing effect on air temperature should be noticeable.

A solar panel directly driving a fan will work well for cooling, if the sun isn't shing, you probably don't need cooling. This also helps heat the ground, so that later in the winter, it will raise the incoming temperature more. I ran 100' of 4" couragated non-perferated hose on the outside edge of my fondation hole (about 4' away from the footing) about 8' down. The incoming air at -40F ooutside was +7F into the house.
As for the treatment of those outside the tribe, that is why they were not considerd fully human, with various reasons being attached.

I saw a forum last night (I was looking for something else) where pot-growers were talking about there experiences growing mary jane in the wilderness. They had any number of strategies, but most of the experienced ones (we are talking self-use fit in a 5 gallon bucket type planting here) seemed to want to avoid the obvioulsy fertile and self watering places, because they were too obvious and either the police or theives would get them. THe theives sound like they were as much a nusance as the police.

Can you imagine how difficult it will be to keep the theives away when food (required by 100% of the populatio) is involved. I know people who do communal gardening and they have constant issues with people stealing their produce: and you know these people cannot be starving.

The placid urban garden- homesteading setups in a partial collapse stressed economy situation, but not likely in anything much worse.

The situation you describe with women and children (probably not accidentally) was what happened with the Indians. But the indians had suffered enormous losses to desease, and were fighting in a new animal fur fueled arms race, so they badly needed to keep there numbers up.

Glad to hear the big dig is continuing. Keep me posted.

The post-apocalyptic advice is interesting to read. I don't have much confidence any single prediction of what such a life would be like... but the range of possibilities does stimulate the imagination.

TMM- it sounds like you know what you are doing with earth tubes. But please translate into English. Apex? Come on, make it a "tubes for dummies" explnation.

Apex is a fancy way of saying 'highest point'.

Dat wood B duh highest most spot in ur house ex cracker boy.

This would create the thermo-siphon that you are looking for.

Best is small diameter pipe over a long distance, at least 4 or 5 ft. down, with air being circulated in a loop by a low speed high volume fan.

lol- 'apex' = highest point.
About your truck... not fully cognizant ofthe situation, can I ask why you're digging out from under it rather than useing a jack and flat meterial?
We (some of us here, anyway) are always getting stuck or hung up on something, and the common tactic is to jack each wheel to a suitable height, build up a bed of flat material beneath the tire, repeat with others, then drive off. I've even had the wondrous opportunity to make a temporary roadbed from boards and plywood. (Your driveway sounds like mine when the springs decide to flow north.)
Anyway- just a thought I had. Really, kind'a wish I was there to help.

TMM- ok, I could have looked in the dictionary but I did want it dumbed down. Thank you. So, if I am hearing this correctly, it doesn't matter how high or low the far away intake pipe is in the ground ( ground slopes down from the trailer, I'm worried about how high the pipe sticks up from the trench down the hill) but whether you create an opening in a vent at the highest point inside the trailer. I've seen illustrations that showed the far away intake pipe had to be higher than the inside opening. So, that is incorrect? Just open an iside roof vent? As far as the stuck truck, I only had a floor jack and couldn't get under the two front tires, so the back ones just spun on my raised sheet of plywood. I try to fess up to ignorance when it applies, as you can see from the pipe questions. Thanks for being patient. Be cool, Jim

This may be a longer version of what others have said, but...

The air intake for your earth cooled pipe (ECP) should be at a lower point than the place in your home where the pipe meets the house. Preferably, this is at a gentle, relatively constant angle. This allows any condensation in the pipe (e.g., imagine warm moist air going into the pipe and getting cooled- you will get condensation) to naturally flow out of the pipe onto the ground. If condensation collects in the pipe you will have a mold growing petri dish in your air intake. If you live in a humid climate, you must clean out the pipes regularly with disinfectant (e.g., leave a rope in the pipe to pull a bleach-soaked rag through with another equal length of rope tied to the other end).

During the winter, the slight upward tilt in the system will allow passive rising of warmer air in the pipe into your home.

In the summer, the system will draw cooler air into your home, but works best if you have a relatively tight seal in the home and open a vent in the roof of your home (e.g., "apex") about the same size as the dimensions of your pipe. Some people use another piece of pipe for the vent and paint the top part that is sticking out of the house black. The summer sun heats the top of the vent pipe and helps prime the air flow of warm air out of the ceiling area, drawing in coller air through the ECP.

I've studied this type of system, but have not implemented it yet.

jim if you have the pipe at the end of the trench higher than your trailer end it will suck the air out of your trailer if you have it lower air will be drawn in to your trailer depends on what you want it to do and lowes has a solar vent fan for 200$ including solar panel.a little pricey the old way to create a draw is use a black pipe it heats up making it draw air up the insidean oldcomputer fan could ne got at a thirft store cheap may help they only draw 1 amp at 12 volts.gl gary in bama

Just think temperature differential. The high point being the hottest.

Do you have a farm jack or also called a high lift jack. Really good for those type situations.

Thanks to one and all for the help on the earth tubes. The winter heat is far more important than the cool air ( 9 months vs. 3 ). BTW, the erronious info was from the book "How to live without electricity and like it". But at least she introduced me to the whole concept, so it was still money well spent.
