don't worry, be happy?

DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY?

I see the Jerk-Off Police are back at the comments section. “Nothing to say about Bin Laden? TSHTF and you don’t tell us?” Again with repeating myself. These articles are posted three days ahead of time, usually. I can bump up an article and post it sooner, but not on the weekend. I don’t have home Internet, just work or library. So, Monday lunch is the soonest I can write about this particular episode of Happy Bullcrap. And it is a load of horse crap. Am I the only one remembering a few years back when they claimed to have killed him the first time? All we get to see is digitally altered photo’s, right? I don’t trust them myself. My barometer for bull crap is as follows. The more it is covered, the less true it most likely is. Or it is serving as some kind of distraction. When the networks endlessly spout about unproven propaganda, hours and hours, all saying nothing, I don’t buy it. Something else, something big is going down. Count on it.

*

I know that in the past I might, or might not have ( sometimes its hard to remember ), made comments that stated in one form or another that you should buy your basics, then step back and relax. A minion certainly brought it up recently. To a degree this is true. You can’t go about your life worried all the time. I do so, but it isn’t a type of fear that eats at my stomach lining. Rather, it is an awe inspiring fear, an opportunity for education and enlightenment. I actually have fun thinking up all the ways we can die a horrible and elongated death. In a few instances it prompts me to add to my preps, but most of the time I’m just in awe of my newest and brightest idea. Since I’m not like all those Yuppie Scum out there that need to keep buying more and more semi-autos, or another can of freeze dried monkey testicles, not to mention paying off the mortgage on the retreat, I don’t sit up startled in the middle of the night, sleepless, worried, stressed. I’m content with my wheat and bolt gun. They will keep me alive and that’s all I’ve ever been worried about. Not continuing an artificial middle class existence. However, I’m also paid to worry about this stuff and you are not. So the question remains- should you do more worrying?

*

Should you procure your basic preps, your better than nothings, and get on with your life? Or should you force yourself to do more? Well, doesn’t it depend on what you are worried about? Unless you are all for a relatively rapid collapse of civilization brought on by the end of oil ( and if you don’t believe in Peak Oil, I won’t change your mind no matter what I say ) having one year of food, a rifle and filter, and five hundred rounds of ammo more than likely should be all you worry about. You’ve bought insurance and now you can back to impressing your wife with your paycheck and the size of your SUV. Until a guy with a bigger one of both comes along ( why do I only dig on fems and never point out the many and varied flaws of men? Not because I think we are perfect but because we are so easily controlled. All a guy needs, most guys not the minority of “players” who give the rest of us a bad name, is to have regular half way decent sex and he is easily herded about. What pisses me off about modern females is that she won’t use the carrot but only the stick. You need both, ladies. You will have much better control by giving it up all the time and then threatening withdrawal rather than withholding it as a matter of course and promising it only if we behave, or if you feel like it- did I mention I’m usually only involved in dysfunctional relationships? ). Alas, that was the old, easy way. Buy and forget. I’m beginning to think, as we are daily bombarded with the unfolding crisis, that I might have been a little too optimistic about the collapse timetable.

*

Or, to put it another way, the slow collapse part is taking an awful long time and the fast collapse part is taking way too long. We’ve been discussing this in one form or another all week and I imagine you are tired of it. But I threw you a bone with the semi-auto article so shut up. I know this will make me the most popular guy around, giving you more bad news, but I think these basic preps are only the beginning. You need to be prepping for the ongoing economic collapse. I’m not just talking about junk land or a trailer. We’ve covered all the alternate strategies besides that ( and will again, oh yes, we will ). I’m beginning to give more merit to the farming/gardening strategy most of you dream about only because the collapse is in fact taking so long. Even the most space constricted can stack up discarded tires and grow potatoes. But you also need to be worried about your debt. No, the odds are you most likely won’t see them forgiven as the bankers are sent up in a mushroom cloud. As I’ve said, the bankers are the cockroaches of the human race. They will be the last to die. Basically, putting aside all the blather and details, your primary concern should be the money economy failing YOU. You can’t count on the “work hard and be rewarded” paradigm. Despite any noise to the contrary, most of us are still doing this. In our case it might be, “work hard and buy preps until the last minute”, but you are still counting on your hard work to be paid for and for the marketplace to have the goods available to sell you. That model will break down before our civilization collapses. And then you are stuck with few options.

*

I know I’m just repeating myself. But it is time to start making hard choices, while options are available. For instance, what if wheat ( I know wheat is part of your basics, but sorry, I’m short on other examples for slow collapse right now ) suddenly became as scarce as rice did three years ago? What are your options for food then? The freeze dried crap is back ordered. The shelves full of rice and beans are only one or two hoarders away from depletion, and the back stock is JIT. Which proved untrustworthy in Japan. Populations are exploding and resources are being depleted. Your window is narrowing. Options are shrinking daily. There, I guess that is the article theme. So perhaps you should be worrying more. Your house loses value yearly, as your property taxes go up. Your car is underwater, your job is hanging by a thread, prices are all going up. What more do you need to convince yourself the recovery is a myth?

Myself, I am cramming into my little brain as much info on the gathering aspect as I possibly can. Here in Floriduh much grows wild that can be consumed, in fact more than a person could need. Preps only will make life even easier. Now where you are James, the local flora is a bit more sparse, yet even there much grows wild that can be eaten if one has the knowledge.
Food is the least of my worries, now Zombie cannibals are entirely another matter ! Thas wut I got's ma 45 ACP fer he he . She got's one too. Yuppie scum Beware...

So I finally took your advice and bought a Corona grain mill off ebay instead of waiting until I could grow the stones to piss off the wife and buy a Country Living model. It arrived with a $60-plus-shipping unused stone wheel conversion kit (the owner didn't seem to know what they had)for making fine flour. Suddently the $40 I paid for the practically new unit didn't seem so bad! Your wisdom is almost as great as your hair.

This is a classic Bison article--full of piss and vinegar.

Love it and keep up the good writing. IMHO you are probably the most spot-on survival writer out there.

You are 100% correct that this collapse is taking its own sweet time. Who would of thought that the powers that be could keep the wheels on this ol' Jalopy for this long?

Doesn't hurt to grow a few items to supplement your food storage. It really doesn't take that much space to grow a sizable amount of food for 1 person.

Concentrate on the tried and true items--potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic--all these are easy to grow and can last for several months if stored properly.

Add a little summer salad garden--lettuce, spinach, radishes and a tomato plant or two and you're all set.

Hey, I've got an idea for an article. Tell us what you'd do different if you could start again at some certain point. Interestingly, I think were about the same age, and I was in the military too. I read your blog frequently because, you say so many things that I think. I read other stuff too, so I don't get caught in a bubble or feedback loop. I think TSHF within a year, two at most.

I am curious if you would do things different though. Maybe walk away from survival, and live "day to day" or something.

Were in a similar boat, I'm getting a divorce, and have a daughter. It's killing me. But, I really wonder, what's the point to surviving, if I can't save her? If I can't pass along the "empire" or at least the bulk of my accumulations - I'll lose most everything in the divorce, and I'm currently out of work, and honestly at my age - 44 doubt, I'll make as much as I did in the past, so it's definitely a life changer. Do you have any advice?

I guess I question, because I don't have family near by, and we're not particularly close anyways... You mention the importance of blood relations, and I like the idea, but I don't have that. How does a "single" man survive the coming feudal system without family - I guess I'll just be cannon fodder, but doesn
t that beg the question of why have prepared to begin with? What do you think? Is it your nature, verse a real plan to survive. Age is a cruel mistress, but I digress, from what's the point? Especially without a clan?

Ken said...

Sorry, one more point; I understand the point is to survive, but what is the rational, if we know that it would only be the meagerest of existance as individuals, verses groups. And, if you/we wait till after to find/found groups - won't that lead right back to system we have to day - The smart, attractive, young will take from all of the rest? Anyway, just some thoughts. Thanks, Ken

Has anyone checked the possibility's of using private camp grounds for a retreat. I have been looking at a local one with that in mind.
Prices run from $1500 OBO (for 1 lot) to $39000 for (8 lots, campers, buildings, everything needed to enjoy camping in one deal) These are private sale prices.
The campground has lots of there own for sale.
I need to check farther but it looks like you can put a 400 sq.ft. camper & a 256 sq.ft. building on each lot. Lot size varies but must be about 40x200. Lots are deeded separate & taxed directly from county. Camp dues are less than$375/yr. per lot with additional lots charged lesser amounts.
The beauty of this is that it is gated & would afford protection to bug out supply's & possible like minded people after TSHTF. I will develop this farther. Larry

Make sure that there is no time limit on your stay. I know that you would own the lot, but even in that situation, there may be a time limit on how long you can stay at a time on your own land?

I was informed by the building dept
(I'm in the peoples republic of CA)
that I could legally camp on my own land for a period of 2 weeks?
Beyond that you needed to go the fully permited, several thousand dollar, legal residence route.

An inexpensive remote lot might be a better choice?

"freeze-dried monkey testicles"

ha ha!

Unfortunately, my more juvenile side dominates and that was good for a chuckle, thank you.

Beyond that little gem, great article.
