FUN REINDEER GAMES
Remember our discussion about the island that had reindeer “seeded” on it? The island, being full of yummy lichen that had grown unencumbered, had six reindeer put on it in the 1940’s. Six. In nineteen years that number that exploded to several thousand. Then, in the mere space of three years the entire population crashed 98%. You can’t just dismiss that by saying reindeer have a brain the size of one of their little pebble turds ( do reindeer have small round turds-inquiring minds do indeed want to know ). Or that we are all that much smarter ( most of our higher brain function goes towards responding to bright and shiny stimuli such as SUV’s ). Because one or even two generations ( and, being an
exponential growth
after encountering unlimited food supplies, those last numbers are huge ) are already born before it is noticed by anyone, reindeer or people, that the food supply is no longer adequate. And then, simple as can possibly be, your population drops 90-99%. Being smart doesn’t help you at all if you don’t recognize the danger until after you start falling off the cliff. And resources ain’t economics. You can’t fix a material problem with new theories. Are we already
overshot
? No, go back to sleep. Of course the world can feed seven billion people without petroleum.
*
Sigh. I guess I have to spell it out. I was being sarcastic, just in case you were wondering. We can’t even feed one billion folks without petroleum, let alone seven billion of them. We will crash to far below solar farming maximum potential. If we follow the reindeer lead we kill off all but about 120 Million, M as in million, not B as in billion, people globally. However, reindeer don’t have
nuclear weapons
, motor vehicles still containing some petroleum, semi-automatic weapons and a really bad case of entitlement, nor are they capable of eating each other. I think a better guess is that under one hundred million will survive. Perhaps only a few ten’s of millions. Now, that is the good news. The bad news is that probably every one of us here will be included in the fatalities. We all live too close to each other. We all commute to the same area to work, and we all import our food from other areas. The problem with preventing yourself from being a casualty is that we are first going to go through a economic collapse before a die-off. All those of you safely billeted out on your
remote farms
will lose the homestead to the bank first. Gasoline will become too expensive to work out of the retreat. If your retreat is paid and you grow all your food and you can stay out of town, you will most likely survive IF, and only if, you have enough extra food and weapons to bribe your helpers to defend it. In this aspect, I agree that
Rawles
survival plan is the best. I just don’t think you have the time left to slowly acquire all the required supplies and the land as he did.
*
Most of us, even myself, I hate to admit, are mostly prepping just to survive an
economic collapse
. To survive a die-off, if you are poor, can only be achieved with remote property ( even junk land ) and becoming a recluse. Not five miles from town, either. Probably much further. And if you make regular trips into town for employment or supplies, enough that the nearest neighbors notice, your seclusion is seriously hindered even if you are a long ways from town. It only takes one of two people to kill you. Another option is some isolation, and enough food on hand to pay off everyone to help defend you. With the clear defensible space to make that happen. Even the suburbs aren’t out of the question. With enough of a security force, and if the houses aren’t close enough to be a fire hazard. It only costs $150 per person per year to store the bare minimum of wheat, but you are bribing all of your needed
security personnel
plus all the dependents they drag along with them. You might literally be shelling out thousands of dollars per years worth of food. And human nature being what it is, none of us will do this. We will rationalize away either investing thousands we can’t comfortably afford, or dismiss heading for the
boonies
due to the very real possibility of losing our freaking mind.
*
Yet, reindeer die-off of the human race is not a question of if but of when. It can’t NOT happen. The best guess of the latest is around 2030. Most likely much sooner, since even when
Peak Oil
denial is overcome, the severity of the downside is usually downplayed. I think we can all agree that usually I’m pretty paranoid ( as paranoid as you can be and still stay functional ). But even I rationalize away what really needs doing. I need to be much better hidden, and I need to cash out and disappear, only coming into town twice a month to post to the Internet and keep my supplies topped off. But I make excuses. As much as the idea appeals to me, I don’t know if I have what it takes to be that secluded and without contact. I know it needs doing, yet can’t force myself. I offend myself with my waffling. I know I should be smarter than anyone else. Perhaps I am but just lack willpower. Or perhaps going so long without testicles, their being under control of the ex-wife, made for a hormone imbalance and I’m acting all girly. Expect to hear more of my moaning and
self loathing
, I’m nothing if not over-analytical. But, seriously, can you think why our economic system could collapse, and our oil supplies shrink, and there NOT be a die-off?

There's no conceivable way to avoid die-off if things hit the fan, and yes, they appear to have hit the first (economic collapse) blade. We're back to castles and moats once the scenario gets serious, I guess. People need more than food, though. Our herding instinct is pretty strong. I think refugees will band together around the IDEA of growing food successfully together. Not like they tell you in the eco-villages - those are too expensive and hard to maintain since they consist primarily of current-system infrastructure. I think an advanced sort of survival training for preppers is to try to learn to be the kind of person who can organize, and maintain a decent grip on, that kind of group. In other words, leadership talent. You'll collect around you what you get. Committed field soldiers with battle cred who want to offer service may be our best resource.
Number Four
Well dang, aren't you playing Mr. Sunshine today, lol. Can't say as I see differently though, when we lose electricity, the whole house of cards goes kablooey. Hopefully, this event is a long time in the future.
Have a great Memorial Day people, thank you veterans for your service.
I completely agree... once electrical power is lost... the "die-off sequence" will be very similar to ones described in the book 'One Second After'......"The first takes place within a week (those in hospitals and assisted living). After about 15 days, salmonella induced Typhoid fever and Cholera set in from eating tainted food, drinking tainted water, and generally poor sanitation. Americans have lived in an environment of vaccinations, sterilization, and antibiotics making them prime targets for third-world diseases. The lack of bathing and poor diet will lead to rampant feminine hygiene infections; deep cuts, rusty nail punctures, and dog bites go untreated with antibiotics, tetanus shots, or rabies treatment as more die from common infections.
Critical medical supply and food thieves and others are executed in public as enforcement of martial law. In 30 days cardiac and other drug-dependent patients die-off. In 60 or so days, the pacemaker and Type I diabetics patients begin to die-off. Next, come the cold-turkey withdrawal for hard-core alcoholics and consumers of other addictive compounds such as Oxyconton, Codine, Prozac, and Xanax. The 5% of population having severe psychotic disorders that no longer have medication will re-create bedlam. Jury rigged wood-burning stoves lead to carbon monoxide deaths and fires that cannot be controlled for the lack of a fire department.
.... fighting over scarce resources leads to confrontation, home invasion, and more violence-related die-offs. The communities become an inviting target for free prisoners and organized gangs and more violence-related die-off. Ration cards are issued to conserve the little remaining food; regardless, the community slowly starves with the elderly the first to die-off. Next parents starve themselves to save their children. Throughout this period suicides are common. After a year, approximately 20% of the initial population has "survived."
This was the "average" die-off for the country. Food-rich Iowa had the highest survival rate with a 50% die-off while New York city and Florida had a 95% die-off from its fighting among the large populations, high elderly population, and, in Florida, the lack of air conditioning, rampant transmission of disease, and natural disasters such as hurricanes."..... Thats the cold reality of it.

Fun reindeer games? Damn strait it's going to be fun.
You made a previous post a while back called Suicide by Apocalypse and that's my plan. It's a super simple plan too, do whatever and the pieces will fall into place on their own.
I don't care about making it through the bottle neck or surviving until old age where I'd be tortured by my failing body and I don't want to pass on my crappy genes either.
Nah, I'll stock pile some supplies to see me through for a while, just long enough so that I can watch things really fall apart.
At some point someone or something will take me out and I'm ok with that as long as I get to live long enough to watch things unfold.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy life in the end times.
Lichen is a gritty wild edible.
All that "yummy lichen" takes a very long time to grow. And it's only yummy if you make reindeer soup with it.
It's not a great food. Mostly for alpine survival.
As for why you won't move... why bother? Make your (VC) Bison complex. Clay is very sturdy and requires no bracing if angled like ^. Call it your delta hole. Unfortunately it's like whack-a-mole in a featureless area.
Lichen, it's whats for dinner!
120 million is a hell of an undershoot (overshoot?). The planet can and has sustained at least a billion people without petroleum. In 1800, pre-petroleum, world population was about a billion and thriving. In 1700, before large-scale coal use, population was over 600 million.
Not to quibble though. Once the first 6 billion are gone, it probably doesn't matter much if the population is 100M, 600M, or a billion.
One bad thing about such a small population. People are going to be farther apart. I'm going to need a longer range rifle.
Hi Jim,
When using the reindeer example we need to keep in mind that the reindeer did not grow any of their food, whereas humans do.
Another point, you said:
"It only costs $150 per person per year to store the bare minimum of wheat, but you are bribing all of your needed security personnel [Image]plus all the dependents they drag along with them."
Some people would think those you save would be grateful for being saved from starvation with the wheat you stocked for them.
That won't be the case. When they see and smell the YUMMY stuff you have stocked for yourself, they'll make you share, or kill you and take it.
They'll all get together and take a vote. Democracy, that's the fair way right?
Any way, IT'S NOT FAIR! IT'S NOT FAIR THAT YOU HAVE SO MUCH AND THEY HAVE NOTHING.
You know what comes next.:)
OH! It's the children! They're doing for the children!
DW
Part of what is going on (in your head) is that you lost your head of security (#4) and are rightfully concerned. But don't forget why you live where you live - you hate people (with good reason).
Yeah, well, when the grid goes down we're all toast..... literally. Think Fukushima times 700.
Undershoot Sorry, Anon but you're not accounting for the fact that unlike in 1700 before large-scale coal use or almost anybody could grow some kind of food without petrochemical additives and pesticides or complex mechanical aids, nowadays even in third world hell holes even the most resilient farmer use some kind of modern "help" imagine your average Joe Sixpack (aka Couchpotato) putting up the work needed just to avoid starvation let alone prosper and become a wealthy landlord.
also on a final note, they neither have nukes, semi-autos, and any of those nasty and efficient ways of killing each other.
You may be too optomistic: here is my (somewhat lengthy) reasoning.
