MOSIN NAGANT GAS SAFETY/DIXIE SURVIVAL
And I quote:
“No provision is made to allow powder gases to escape harmlessly out of the bolt or action in the event of a pierced primer or ruptured case head. Gases escaping into the firing pin hole from a pierced primer would not likely get to the shooters face but would probably dissipate through the joint of the bolt head and bolt connecting sleeve. In the case of a ruptured case head, especially if the break were in the upper half of the head, the gases would escape through the ejector groove and through the upper locking lug raceway, which would aim the gas directly toward the shooters forehead. Late models, without the inside receiver collar to partly surround and enclose the bolt head, would afford even less protection. However, the occurrence of case head rupturing is extremely rare, and there is little chance of it happening with new ammunition.”

Now, before I comment on all that, I must profoundly apologize for previous erroneous claims. I thought this was an article from
American Rifleman
, probably in the 70’s. This doesn’t seem to be the case. Please keep in mind that this stapled stack of Xerox’ed papers was sent to me six years ago to me by a Minion First Class. Looking over it again I can’t find anything about American Rifleman other than a reference to one of their articles. And I honestly have no idea what made me think this was from the 1970’s. Funny how some things stick with you, true or not. What this looks like is from one of those 100-200 page “books” printed on magazine paper, the “annual list of best surplus rifles” type of deals. I would image probably from the 90’s, but I’m just guessing as the minion wrote “from my files”. One of those annoying guys that actually organizes things and knows where to find information ( my 80-90% effective filing system is “I think it’s in this stack right here” ). I wish I could attribute the above quote to its rightful owner, but I haven’t a clue. But I typed it in word for word.

As far as the above goes, here is all the information I had on the MN safety issue. That paragraph is what I based my leeriness on. Read it, savor it, make your own damn decision. I would guess 99% of you have more
mechanical knowledge
of firearms than I do. I would think that if the above frightened me, it would certainly worry you. But perhaps you just ain’t paranoid enough. I don’t trust
Soviet
/Russian quality myself. I would think their ammo, no matter how affordable, could be considered on par with NOT new ammunition. But that’s just me. Not that I’m saying American quality is much better, but at least with all our rabid attack lawyers there is a decent chance our ammo won’t blow up on the user. I don’t think the Russians care if we try to sue them or not. But again, make up your own mind. I’m just here to try to give you all the facts. I never liked the gas safety issue and have no reason to change my mind.

A minion asked about what I thought about
Dixie
as a survival retreat, especially Kentucky and Tennessee. Let me say that Thursday, tomorrow as I’m writing this, I’m going to order “
Strategic Relocation
” by Joel Skousen. This is a great leap of faith because it is almost $40 after shipping. But I’ve lusted after something like this ( thanks to Rawles for the shout out ) for some time. I will have to wait about a month after shipping to get it, I have a minion who trades/loans books with me and I’m sending it to him first ( once I get it I won’t want to be without it ). Once I have that I’ll be able to throw tons of facts at you. But I don’t really need facts and figures per se. Every area, even Lucifer’s Swine Sty,
Yankeeland
, has something good going for it, just as every area has drawbacks. If you stay out of large urban areas, stay far enough away from them that the population will less likely overwhelm you ( nuke fallout might be of some concern, but I’d be more worried about famine drawn crowds ), you can make almost any area work. That said, there is one important criteria you can’t overlook.

You must, no question, live amongst your tribe. Or be near the tribe you can assimilate into. There is no RIGHT tribe, other than the one you belong to. Race is a non-issue, unless it marks tribal lines. Remember the TV clip while Obammy was running? The crew was interviewing a Southern gentleman, who frankly admitted he wasn’t voting for the jug eared idiot just because he was black. The intent was of course to paint anyone in the South who didn’t vote for Obammy as a
racist
. Never mind that blacks nationally voted all out of proportion for him, just because he was black. Ah, the magic of turning hypocrisy into affirmative action. My point is, knowing it or not, this gentleman was smarter than most of us
white boys
in that he knows the wisdom of living within your tribe. I’ll be honest, I don’t get blacks. I’ve “dated” ( gentle euphemism for paying prostitutes ) Orientals and married Mexicans. But I wouldn’t have a relationship with a black female ( not like she’d want me ). Not because she’s black but because I have no idea of how they think, their cultural mores. I applaud their staying true to their culture, and I can understand the continued animosity, but they are frankly too weird to relate to. I couldn’t relate to Texans either. I lasted six months there. I only lasted a few hours in Louisiana, the vibe there was so weird. And that was from all races that lived there. Skin color is only an environmental adaptation. It doesn’t mean anything. But culturally differences can kill you. Why do you think different languages are so important? They mark an intruder.

I could relate to folks in Oklahoma. You might not call them southern, but I do. East
Okies
anyway. I would have stayed there and started a homestead ( dirt cheap then ) if the job situation wasn’t so bad. After four years of working a graveyard shift I was mentally melted down. I fled more to escape the job than the area. Florida was a bit more strange. All transplanted Yuppie Whores. On the coastal strip anyway. If I had gone inland I would have bought a trailer lot and settled down ( and probably been killed in a hurricane ). But again, fleeing the job. My limited exposure to the South left a favorable impression. I think if I could have gotten away from the urban asshats I would have been able to blend in and enjoy. Now, aside from culture and tribe, the South has a great history of rural guerrilla warfare to fight intruders. All them good old boys know every holler and hill. A
bushwhacker
can effectively use just a shotgun or rimfire. Local terrain favors the defender.
Sherman
triumphed largely because he left behind resupply by railroad and lived off the land. An invader living off a logistical trail usually will be defeated in asymmetrical warfare ( which is probably why we are nuking the Iraqi’s- within one generation they won’t be able to reproduce and the land depopulates ). Most Yankees, on the other hand, don’t have the kind of outlook that makes feuds fun. They won’t be as tenacious. I said most. Your tribe might be different, so don’t get your panties in a bunch.
*
I’ve said before that malaria and racial conflict will make Southern Survivalism dicey. But if you assimilate, there are far worse areas to hole up. As far as particular states, again, cultural preferences. I’m sure Appalachian hillbillies are different than swamp rats elsewhere. I’d be renting a trailer spot to see if an area worked for you before I bought land ( or, just Internet date and marry a fat ugly local gal ).

I've lived in the midwest (northern and southern), west coast, and southeast. I have not found it that hard to adapt to different local cultural norms and fit in. The question is whether you want to fit in or not. The west coast did not work for me. Listen before you speak. Think before you speak. Remember you are the alien who does not know the local lay of the land. But... showing up as a newby two days before TEOTWAWKI is not a good plan.
I still don't consider this a deal breaker for the Mosin. Use the tool that comes with the rifle to check the headspace. As much as possible wear safety glasses to protect your eyes (good idea regardless of what rifle you use). Inspect the ammo you are going to use. The ammo is so cheap, if you have any concerns don't use the round.
Bad hair day? where is the foam and froth old survivor one?.......J/K
I think you hit the nail square on the head about Tribe assimilation. Im a South Carolina Cherokee Native an most likely would not last a NY minute in NY.....same goes for Yankee Bob.
Culture cross-overs are problematic as well,..even though I live in a state with a huge black population and have worked side by side an even shared meals with these folks,..I wouldnt dream of moving over into their "tribal" areas.
For the gas problem on the MN,.. two 1/16 in. holes drilled perpendicular to each other on the receiver shroud just behind where the bolts locking lugs engage at the chamber throat solves the "gas escape" problem. But at any rate....most blow-by gasses normally escape into the mag-well. To each his own,...but over the years I and a few gun-friends have shot in excess of over 10k 7.62x54r. Ive owned 8 Mosins in all that time,..my choice is a hex-reciever not the round type,...the worst problems ive ever encountered or heard of was stuck shell casings. I normally shoot Milsurp ammo unless Im hunting....then I use 175 grain american brass cased lead points.
I guess what im saying Jim is that i dont trust the validity of the articles claiming case rupture or dangerous blow-by. Uncle Sam trained me as an armorer back in the 70's when we had the old A-1 and A-2 Mattel jam-a-matics hahahaa talk a bout a piece of shit!
Good post today
GARY IN BAMA Jim as a life long southern red neck thanks for the post. to me the biggest draw back of a retreat here is the heat and humidity.in a grid down event life here will be miserable and racial warfare would be a given in the city. Here in the rural areas it wont be so bad.I have never heard the n-word sound as vile from a white man as it sounds when used by a colored man directed at another colored. around here most the farm land has been fallow for 40+ years or at the most just hayed lots of old timers remember what a family farm took to run so knowledge is here to. when you do a plus and minus breakdown of life in any area the pluses should make up your mind.AND JUST FOR THE RECORD THE SOUTH HAS NEVER SURRENDERD WE HAVE JUST HAD A 150 YEAR CEACE FIRE!!!!!!
The quote appears to be from, "Bolt Action Rifles" by Frank De Haas and Wayne Van Zwoll, and has been printed that way in multiple editions of that book.
I think this is like not buying Ford vehicles b/c you heard one time a guy had a wheel come off while driving and that's scary. Borderline superstitious or OCD.
Thanks for posting the original source on the gas safety. I may be too loose, but I'm not seeing much to be too concerned about -- particularly if one feeds it a recently produced diet, which you should be doing anyway. And, for <$100, I don't see why a person wouldn't pick up a few of these no matter what. Use them for your primary option. Or, use them to hand out to others to play with. I think you should do a Monday Gunday or something, where you go A to Z on everything good and bad about specific choices. You can thank me for the idea by starting with the SKS and Dragunov. Your blog is still the best on the web.
I totally agree that caliber of weapon does not matter. Having been there done that, during a fire fight I not once gave a thought as to what kind of weapon was shooting at me. Still kept my head down !
In the woods, a rim fire is just as good as anything. Plus you can carry a ton of ammo.
Down here in Floriduh, I don't fear the Yuppie scum after SHTF. They are feared of the jungle ! Not so Bubba. Therefore I have made many redneck friends and spend a lot of time out hunting with the good ole boys.
