FATALISM
I wanted to throw out a “best of luck” to
Mohave Rat
. I thought his previous comment about me going insane was amusing, amusing in a “close to the mark” kind of way rather than a “amusing, with sarcasm” kind of way. Thinking about other comments reminds me I’m not clear which one I mean when I throw out snide retorts. I understand what he is saying, at least as far as going from middle of the road
survivalism
to full blown panic you usually see now. I’m a bit more cynical and less than compassionate towards others, also. But, hey, at least it gets your attention, because the last thing anyone needs is a rational, calm voice of preparedness. If there was ever a time to shriek from the rooftops that we are all going to die, this is it. The Rat’s remarks, after I called him an old wise bastard ( hey, it might be backhanded, but it’s still a compliment ), was a bit fatalistic. Life throws enough stress your way and after awhile you could give a crap about pretty much nothing. Another comment inspired today’s musings, basically saying, stop worrying so much we all die sometime.

After you’ve seen your kids become adults, and your life goals are pretty much done, if life hands you one rotted lemon after another, not a chance in hell of making
lemonade
, at some point you just don’t care if you last all that much longer. I’m not talking about a weak ass pansy
Nancy Boy
cop out of suicide. In some instances, suicide is cool. For instance, if the jack booted thugs are surrounding your home over an unpaid property tax bill, and you know they will throw you in jail where you will be sodomized ( where the official rate of AIDS is 30%, so you know in reality it is much higher so getting it up the ass usually means you WILL get AIDS if you live long enough ) and receive a death sentence. I couldn’t fault anyone in that situation from going Suicide By Cop ( if you are a LEO, put yourself in this guys shoes instead of being a thoughtless robot parroting the official line that all criminals are scumbags. A lot of crimes are victimless ). I’m talking about the suicide by folks that are just stressed. No one loves me, boo hoo. Actually, in your case suicide is cool because that puts you out of the gene pool, but I still reserve the right to mock you rather than feel sorry for you.
Fatalism
isn’t about killing yourself because life sucks, fatalism is just not given a Shitte if you are killed or die naturally.
*
Now, being fatalistic is NOT an excuse not to prep. Suicide is “life will be too terrible, I won’t try to survive afterwards by prepping”. Fatalism is “I’ve got guns and ammo and food, but I’ll still probably get wasted soon after the collapse. Oh well, what the hell do I care, I’m old and tired”. And remember, the Gods love to toy with us. If you don’t prepare, they will spare you a death by the hands of others and let you starve slowly. You have to prep just in case you end up surviving despite the best efforts of those around you. Perhaps, and I’m not that great at analyzing myself, but just perhaps, I’m getting more fatalistic. I DON’T panic over all these new and topical threats. I have all my basics squared away. I find it all fascinating and amusing. I just don’t care all that much if I make it long enough to eat all my stores. And, hey, that’s just fatalism from yet one more
failed marriage
, one more gerbil wheel job getting harder as I age, and a long stretch without sex. All that is minor. I can’t imagine how strung out people with real problems feel. Insane life altering crap like major illnesses, death in the family, prolonged unemployment, losing the house, etc. At what point, after a certain age, do you really care anymore?
*
Now, fatalism might actually be, up to a certain point, a survival trait. Perhaps not, I’m just spitballing here. But, thinking on it, perhaps the “don’t care” attitude helps you deal with life. You stop stressing as much. It helps you go quietly into that dark night. And, in a collapse situation, you have a slight edge. You won’t fear death to as high a degree and perhaps you won’t freeze up. The very young have no concept of death, so they are immune at first. The old embrace it as the chance to escape. Perhaps the middle age need to be fatalistic to get over what would normally be paralyzing. As I said, just pondering here, not trying to get deep or too philosophical.

Rawles
, a week or two ago, or hell, I don’t know it could have been a month, brought up all the cool uses for paracord. For instance, a makeshift
rifle sling
. This is of course gay, capital G gay. And retarded. A thin cord will cut into your skin with weight pulling on it. I’ve told you before, trash pick gym bag shoulder straps. Free rifle slings. They already have the attachments to go right on the rifle, and the broad fabric allows a more comfortable wear. I’m not saying the cord won’t work, hell, a few lengths of duct tape would work for awhile. No, I’m saying that an alternate substitute is available, free, and works much better. As any of you idiots that were in the military knows, a rifle sling, with a light plastic carbine, is uncomfortable enough. A real gun, such as a military surplus bolt, will weigh much more and be more irritating with a real sling. If you go paracord you will be sorry. Gym bag straps are free, or, worst case very cheap just buying the whole bag at the
thrift store
.

First: Let me say I consider "wise old bastard" to be a compliment of the highest order. Thank You.
Second: I didn't bring up my loss to garner any sympathy. Just expressing what I felt at the time, like most of my remarks. I haven't cared much for a long time so recent events just put it over the top.
Third: I realize that I have been reduced to evolutionary waste and the polite thing would be to die and get out of all the productive peoples way BUT!
On a cool crisp night when the moon is so bright it causes shadows in the darkness I still want to Howl!
Fourth: You reach a point in life when you realize you survive one day at a time. You don't prepare for the future, you prepare for tomorrow and then the next day and the next.
Never take anything I say to seriously. I really don't care that much.

Good article, His Royal Hairness. Much appreciated.
My sympathies for Mr Mojave Rat. I'm sorry for your loss.
And finally, King McBison, as much as I love it when you take a shot at the Rawles readership (and Rawles writers, and even Rawles himself), I think he was referring to the Paracord braided sling on the instructables.com site, and not just a string of paracord as a rifle sling.
Here is the link to making a rifle sling out of braided paracord:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Paracord-Rifle-Sling/
Now, personally, I much prefer the idea of garbage-picking a gym bag strap for a sling, rather than braiding 80 feet of paracord, but for those with the patience of Job, have at it!
There may still time to learn about
available desert foods.

Fatalism is a good subject to talk about. Many people are excited about TEOTWAWKI. Let's face it--most people work at jobs they hate, their marriages suck and their kids are brats. Who wouldn't fantasize about being Rambo.
The reality is--if you don't like your life now, you're going to hate it when SHTF. The stress, the heat, the lack of "normal" food, the wife bitching and the kids fighting are going to drive you over the edge.
You have to think WHY you want to survive. To be honest, most people won't want to survive what I see coming. It's going to be hard and unfortunately we are pretty soft anymore.
The WHY could be as simple as you wanting to be the last one in the stew pot. But you need to have some goal to work toward.
I love the following saying--you can live 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without heat, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food and 3 MONTHS WITHOUT HOPE.

What?????????
Mr "I BUY ONLY THE BEST!" says to use 550 cord for a sling?
Has your insanity spread to him?
When you have only a bicycle, a sidehack might be useful.

When I mentioned using paracord for rifle slings it was in the context of braiding it into a strap that is wider than most standard 1-inch slings. They are actually very comfortable. - ~Jim Rawles~
And that is what you get when you think you know what you just read. My apologies. If it wasn't normal, I'd feel bad about being such an idiot.
