GUEST ARTICLE ONE OF TWO TODAY
My regular article posted at 7am.

We have been reading about Jims earth tube and his desire for a temp stable
underground room. Not his pit but a real living space
that he can call home during extreme tempatures. First thing we have to establish in any
part of the country is what is the grounds temp in winter and summer. Many county
extition service may have it,but if not get you a small thermometer and dig a hole with
posthole diggers
Go as deep as you can 4 to 5 feet should do it { JIM dig you a hole in the bottom of your
pit a foot or more and you will get a true reading} around here at a floor depth of 8
foot i get 65 to 75 in summer and in winter its 50 to 55. MY room varys a lot because its
off my basement but very livable. If an underground selter is in any ones future think
long and hard about what you need/want in this shelter it will be a major investment.Air
flow is a must and they have to be screened { bugs love storm cellars } then you will
need some kinda lighting .I use leds and recharge the batteried with a solar panel and 12
volt charger. I took Jims advice and use AA for most and got adaptors for C and D
aplications.A small solar panel setup of 60 watts even alows for a small dvd player and
cd player to be used.Heat in this room is not a problem { long johns and a blanket } but
cooking is a bit tricky. ID advise alcohol fuel only as it has no vapors{ sterno/ can
heet or a homemade alcohol stove } food cooking smells have to be vented so place near
the air exhaust . MY long term food storage is kept in the storm shelter because its
climate stable and if its needed thats where im going to be.SO think study plan before
you start, it is doable but it will cost you a lot of time money and lost NU NU from the
wife so weigh everything before you deside. disclamer i did not build mine it came with
the house the old man that had the house built it in the 1950s cold war . its a nice
thing to have but where i live its not a must have unless we do get nuked, EMPed ,famine
revolution earthqauke astoriod or yellow stone erupts, I give up the list is endless To
me the best thing about a hiddy hole like this is it saves ammo!! HOW well in a SHTF
situation hide for a year 7 out of 10 die in under a year I just have to avoid or kill
the remaining 3 see saves ammo.

I would vent even an alcohol stove as it is not the smell that kills you.
seconded.
Anything that needs Oxygen/air of any sort should get its OWN air intake and output pipes.
These pipes can be as close or far as you like from the structure but should end in the structure as near as you can to where you device (ie stove) is going to be.
You can close them off easily enough inside the structure, unless or untill you need them.
I also recomend screening them at both ends with a thin fine screen and a heavier gauge screen to keep out all sizes of pests, and have them sloping away from your structure. (you can use one as a drain if it can go out to daylight or a drywell).
