unemployed II

UMEMPLOYED II

Yesterday I didn’t really say a whole heck of a lot other than stay out of debt, have your shelter paid off and unemployment isn’t any harder than food and minimal energy. This used to be a lot easier, when food was half the price and energy was one third, but then what do we expect since lack of cheap and gushing oil is what is causing the Greater Depression ( which will never ever never end but just get worse since abso-humping-lutly there is no substitute for oil, energy content wise )? The way I look at things, and the way I’ve ( hopefully correctly ) planned things is that my regular bills will get smaller and smaller as my food and energy bills get larger and larger and I’ll stay way ahead of the game until collapse time. Yes, despite all my cautionary bleating, I’d love to have a large garden to really honest truly bring my bare minimum bills close to zero. East Texas would have been nice in that aspect, other than the dismal employment prospects. And the million asswhores sixty miles down the road in Dallas. Just waiting for the collapse to come, they’re barreling down the road and stripping the place bare as they go, screaming about how Whitey owed them a living ( and not just being racist here as the rural areas and drugs go hand in hand with rednecks ) since the welfare checks hadn’t come through. Seriously, people. If you are living in a big city, or close to one, why do you feel safe? Crime is always a huge factor, good times and bad. Fueled by the drugs, which serve to enrich the military, the banks, and also as a employment outlet for the ghettos ( the single mother households live off welfare checks and the single males live off drug dealing-the fathers of all those bastard children will be the vanguard of dissent ). Come any disruption of those cash distributions, it will be the Rodney King riots times a hundred. Just another unintended consequence of buying off the disenfranchised.

So, picking my poison, I’ve chosen to risk starvation rather than riots and lynching. I could be wrong as rain, I have no idea. But, having chosen to rely on the food distribution system until it quits, one must plan on insane prices. The center still holds, we are all still peaceful and compliant, and food prices have more than doubled in ten years ( meat quadrupling, some items doubling- I’m basing this on my shopping bills then and now. Same food, except now less meat and little produce, over twice the price ). So my basic menu, at even more than what I’m paying now, should look something like this ( this is extreme, bottom of barrel and still healthy ). A pound of wheat, a third pound of beans. Several potatoes and a bit of lard. Three eggs. Boring, but cheap comparatively speaking and enough calories, fat, animal protein and vitamins ( potatoes should keep you alive bunny-food-wise, but have sprouts a few times a week for the dark greens ), and a marginal amount of variety. Today, I spend $200 a month for myself to eat, with meat five days a week ( a can of chili and some eggs the other two days ). That is with breakfast and lunch being whole wheat nuke bread. $200 is insane for a months worth of dinners. If I canned the meat, buying in bulk and eating less every day because I wouldn’t need to buy fresh in single packs ( I don’t have a fridge, as the cost of running it is about equal to the extra cost of single meat purchases ), call it $150 a month. That is still insanely priced compared to what food used to cost. And it will just get a lot worse with the coming flood induced grain shortages. Anyway, the proposed austerity diet above would cost around $40 at today’s prices, or under one third the next cheapest. So, even absent Food Stamps, which won’t be canceled until the very end but will counter the increased demand with slower response time, making qualifying harder, and reducing the real purchasing power, I can survive just on half my current writing income. If my land is paid off and the child support is over with.

You see, this is a plan. It might not be perfect, but it is just another aspect of making do. Less than perfect, but better than nothing. That should have been this sites motto, instead of “all you worthless curs of minions into the stewpot”.

My April payment from Kindle was $20 ( 8 books sold, I believe ), just from the sale of my super duperist Frugal Survivalist book. May was double that, $40. This is amazing, and I believe that beats most months selling my Lulu e-book version which has been on sale for over four years. I have mixed feelings about Kindles. The first true e-ink device, thousands of books in one compact device. But also a “all eggs in one basket” issue and a tendency for most Kindle books to save you very little over paper. However, I’m awed by the Kindle sales of my book. Thanks, minions. I love you for every Amazon commission, but of course selling my book is an extra warm and fuzzy.

My apologies to Spud from the comments section. He had to remind me that as we were arguing about guns verses bows, he had previously stated the bow was for hunting, not for defense unless nothing else was available. Sorry, I hadn’t retained that statement. Now, in my defense, I’m reading at least 150 comments a month. But, still, big hugs and little kisses for your patience and cool demeanor. I didn’t think it needed to be said, but I’m the only one allowed to be loud and obnoxious. Mainly because I’m so much better at it. Thanks to all for the continued discussions. I like hearing viewpoints other than my own. Peace.

$200/mo for food and you're eating nearly free gruel for 2 meals/day? I'm very surprised at that figure; I thought it would be less than half of that. Maybe it's the cost of the butter you put on that gruel to make it palatable?

I know you over-think things, but have you considered more eggs, salami, summer sausage, certain cheeses - things that are stable for a while at room temp? What about hauling a block of ice home every few days? What's the soil temp a few feet down? Could you store perishables in an insulated container in the ground? Finally, does your food bill go down in the cooler months when you can buy larger quantities of perishables and store them in nature's refrigerator?

Love the debate.

I have argued for some time that trying to hunt with guns will only advertise ones location. Every year when I hunt with a bow the animals pretty much are oblivious to you being there. Just as soon as the gun season starts, animals become very scarce.
Think ambush and an arrow, very effective and stealthy.
Now where you are, there ain't no forest to conceal oneself. So fighting with a bow wouldn't work so well.
Must have for every survival arsenal. One can get a second hand recurve for a very small sum.

Hugs and kisses ?
Damn son, you better find a woman soon LOL

Hey Spud, not to restart the guns vs bows debate, but a suppressed .22 makes less noise than the twang of a bowstring. Plus you don't have to go looking for the damn arrows. Don't tell me they are illegal-when the SHTF who's coming after you? PS I love bows.

In urban/suburban settings I suspect one of the bigger headaches is going to be hungry children filching from your garden.

You are sooo correct about a suppressed 22. I can build one when the time comes and will. Until the time comes, having the knowledge will do.
Even a lowly 22 cannot be retrieved however.
