I mean, seriously? This is the first thing that popped into my mind at first report of the riots. I can’t believe there isn’t more of this insensitive linking of the old song and current events. Frankly, that disappoints me. Come on people, have fun at other peoples expense. That is the basis of all humor.

Another thing I have a hard time believing is that all the politicians and media talking heads can actually keep a straight face as they pretend to have a hard time understanding why the riots took place. Really? Poor people, getting poorer, react to talks of further cuts to the safety net at the same time the bankers are bailed out globally ( too bad the money ain’t buying much ). You have a hard time believing they are going to target luxury shops to vent their wraith? The idiot mayor saying it was “just criminality”, all of the parliament members lining up behind him, nodding and bobbing their heads, “ay-huh, yep, sure thing, guvner, just common run of the mill thugs, what. Chip, chip.” Oh, there is a huge surprise. The lower class welfare recipients are usually criminals. Of course they are. The ghetto dwellers deal drugs and break any law that makes them money because that is about all they can do. No surprise there. Same as on this side of the Pond. But no one wakes up one day after a few decades living in a craphole and suddenly decides to riot just for Shiites and giggles. There is usually a reason. In Britain, I’d wager they were set off by a police brutality case but the flame bringing that to a boil prior to the riots was the budget tightening and welfare cuts. Here, as black on random white violence explodes, it is most likely for the same reason. Sure, there is a bit of “Obammy is our boy and we have license to act badly at the same time the PC Police crack down as Thought Police to any White criticism of our new bad behavior”. But most likely a lot of it is reaction to worsening local conditions as city and county governments are desperate for money and cut services to the poor.

When Seniors get their benefits cut, as has already been going on for years, they complain to their representative in the mistaken belief that their voice will matter. If the computerized elections weren’t rigged, it might. But, really, no one in government gives a crap. They are no longer listening, or even pretending to listen. If you vote, you are a sucker. You only legitimatize your own screwing. When the middle class get their living standards cut via corporate downsizing, they meekly bend over and take it, working twice as hard to lose all they’ve accumulated at half the pace. That is all the middle class struggle is, running faster on the gerbil wheel to keep the trinkets and bobbles a wee bit longer. When local governments triple the property taxes to add to that burden, the worker bees again suck it up, hostage to a gum and glue money pit. But there is no protest, at most a quiet grumble over another glass of rotgut. When the lower classes get their bennies cut, there is little to lose. They never bought into the willing golden handcuff serf line like the middle class and retirees. Granted a reasonable chance of avoiding identification by acting as a mob, they strike out at the perceived well off. If beaten, it’s just like Da and the belt back in the flat, or playing at hooligans on the school yard. Nothing unfamiliar, hence not as much feared ( perhaps that might be a bit of why corporal punishment is denied to the middle class parents- we must keep the fear of official beating alive and well ). If they are arrested, they most likely will be better fed and in a warmer room. Jail might be quite the improvement ( and a chance to catch up with the old mates ).

Now, to the point. If you don’t think we are headed once again to a repeat of the Sixties riots, the mass scale simultaneous violent eruptions in most ghettos, you surely must have been sampling the illegal product of said criminals. Welfare cuts along with soaring economic meltdown coupled with law enforcement manpower cuts ( I’d wager that it isn’t the wages that are so unaffordable but the combination of the motor vehicle costs and the future retirement liability that make cops so expensive to employ ) virtually guarantee that civil unrest will happen in your neck of the city. Do you have a reasonable facsimile of wealth? Do you project the possession of money? I know, you know and Ross Perot knows that you are up to your eyeballs in debt to rent the appearance of middle class wealth. None of it is real. Your car will be repoed when gas hits $10 a gallon. You house is underwater and soon you won’t be able to afford heating oil or taxes. Your clothes are polyester Chinese generics, and your diamonds are fake. But guess what. You are painting a target on yourself. No mob is going to stop, contemplate your debt situation and assess your relative net wealth. If you look well off, not much of a stretch to position yourself above their station, you will be attacked. Well, if you are unlucky. If you are lucky they just destroy your processions.

An unemployed alcoholic owing a loan shark 20% vig a week, borrowed to pay off the ex-wife from taking him to court, dying of terminal cancer will, if wearing a tie and three piece suit, be considered wealthy and hence a target to the mob. And if White, most likely beaten to death. Sorry to break it to you, but skin color is already a tribal marker in this time of collapse. Perhaps as bad as 150 years ago. If you live in a predominately colored area, you will be targeted NOW, even without riots. Imagine when law and order really break down. Move to an area where your tribe lives, and trade down several levels to live and look like you are lower class worker bees. The middle class is now an ultra-rich and a ghetto mob target.
