too much liquidity

TOO MUCH LIQUIDITY

I was going to throw some naval gazing tripe your way. Such as, while I’m not a very classy guy, basically just a pig that looks on bitches as a receptacle in my sterner, darker moments, I wonder if the last quarter of brooding and foul mood is due somewhat to a new lack of purpose. I’ve been supporting a household with wife for nearly twelve years, and now its just sitting around and scratching myself between reading books. I’m even doing the mindless consumer thing, shopping constantly online at Amazon, excited and ecstatic come order time and decidedly lacking in same once they arrive. I remind myself of a vacant hollow bubblehead Yuppie shopping mall ninja. I almost think my life needs that structured purpose to have enough meaning ( as sad as supporting a ho for a good life’s work is, it beats the gerbil wheel of work and entertainment ). Now that, my fine feathered minions, is sad and pathetic musings. Alas, you are all spared as a comment made a last minute article suggestion I’m using instead. What the heck do you do post-prepping? If everything is squared away, and you are reasonable set and safe, where do you put your money? This is actually a darn good question, as I’ve pondered this myself countless times ( trust me, in my head is the last place you’d want to be ).

*

Yes, yes, poor Bison, boo hoo, he has a problem we all wish we had. Too much money and not any significant place to put it. But remember, the only reason I have this problem is that I prep so cheaply, frugally and tight fisted that it is easy to get to this spot. For instance, I think to myself, gee, I wonder if I should upgrade my arsenal? You know, modern produced arms, current production cheaper ammo. I have many choices, because as good as the Enfields were, they are no longer the perfect choice for several reasons. But inevitably, I wander into the internal debate on The Cheapest Solution. I could spend $600 on new guns, or I could just buy more 303 cases. So I buy some more cases and put the new guns on hold. Because it is usually always cheaper to keep the old arsenal even if the cost of one aspect is ridiculous. I can’t help myself, I’ve taught myself to seek the cheapest solution. It goes against my grain to waste money, even if it is just getting rid of worthless paper for hard assets. But you can also see where I’ve invested my surplus none too wisely. Three lots of land in Elko? Really? A waste of a few thousand bucks. I kid myself that both my kids can live here if there is a need, but they’ve pretty much been brought up Southern and I doubt they want to leave warm and wet for cold and dry. Do I go to the library and see if I can get a branch loan for a book? No, I just buy it if it looks interesting. I have hundreds if not thousands worth of books I won’t read again, or even the first time.

*

But I can’t force myself to keep money in the bank past a few months living expenses. It isn’t that it is burning a hole in my pocket, but that I just know the bank will crash and burn and I won’t see it again ( FDIC Insurance sucks my sweaty ass crack ). I constantly worry I’ll lose it. Back in the day, when working for my last terrible job in the casino, the last job I forced myself to work for the money, our tips were so good I had five grand in the bank, which wasn’t that hard to accumulate ( I was paying $300 a month lot rent in the trailer park and buying groceries at a discount store, and had no car ). I was constantly worried about losing it through bank holidays or inflation, so I bought my first Elko lot for $3,400 cash, sight unseen. It was a gross overpayment, but it bought peace of mind ( of course, as soon as I bought it I started worrying about how I could get there come the collapse ). And yet, I already had the lot in Arizona I bought for $400. I didn’t necessarily need the land. I just didn’t really need the cash, either ( as much as paying the ex off early would have been great, I wanted to pay off with inflated dollars to deny her the higher purchasing power ). I already had precious metal. Any more and I would have worried about theft. I already had food and guns. Too many guns, even going so far as to buy more Enfield’s ( I did lose one to the ex-brother in law when I moved, but I had bought that one pre-Y2K for $75 ).

*

As you can see, I have little idea on what to do with surplus cash. OK, right now the new plan is to save two grand and build underground, forever more being secure without heat ( although I’ll still need some cooking fuel and an hour a day heat for showering would be nice ). But I need to stop wasting so much on marginal book purchases and find a good home for my surplus. In a year, child support is done and over and if I apply that surplus to the last lot payments, I’m all done with debt/payments right before the Mayan End Times. What a relief that everyone is paid off before that! See, I need a new wife to sop up the surplus cash I’ll be having ( don’t get too excited-it’s a surplus, not a fortune ). What should other people do? More preps? Why? You can always refine your preps, add a bit, whatever. But why go overboard, because “not taking it with you when you die” applies to all material goods. You certainly can have too much. You would think this is only a rich mans problem, but frugal folks can also have too much and have no good home for it. In fact, we have it worse. Rich dudes just spend more lavishly, but frugal dudes can’t spend at all.

*

Real estate can depreciate, or be taxed out of your possession. Farmland is tied into the issue of oil based farming. I wonder about either a travel trailer park as an investment, or just the trailers. Cheap housing for the upcoming newly minted poor folk. Cheap to get into, a good return. A part time hobby. Other than that one example, I’m just as stumped as the next guy. Minion suggestions?

Basic financial rule : it makes no sense to invest in something while you still have debts to pay off.

Get rid of your debt, the sooner the better. After that, you can see.

How about installing an underground cistern ? Desert people do this routinely, there must be some reason for this...

purchase the adjoining lots to build up a buffer between you and the "cannibal-inclined" neighbors. Who knows, you may find a spot even more suited to the underground hobbit hole on one of them.

I wouldn't go for renting out either lots or trailers. Poor people simply can't pay their rent sometimes. And you are much too nice to be the kind of SOB that it takes to collect the rent money.

On second thought: the female renters would always have a way to 'pay' you!

Do you have a firearm that is stashed away (i.e. buried or concealed) just in case you are left with absolutely NOTHING to defend yourself with? Nevermind the reason, but say that in some shape or form, all of your firearms have disappeared from your access. BO gun - yup, thats what I'm saying.

Something that can be stashed for just in case, it may never be needed, but just in case it is, a godsend. A .22, single shot shotgun, revoler in very common round, whatever, just something for just in case.

If you don't already have one of those, probably be a good investment, at least for peace of mind.

Buy more solar with your surplus monies. Prices are the lowest they ever been and you can still get a tax break. And forget this underground living fantasy. Buy a bunch of firewood, the shit will last a long time in your dry environment. Install a damn wood stove in the trailer and the potential wives will be practically beating down your door. Also you can't have to much propane. Use that hole you dug for propane storage. If you haven't already start burying caches all over that property. A greenhouse and garden will keep you busy too.

Enfields have skyrocketed in price and are definitely not the "best deal" in a rifle any longer. Not by a long shot;)) Many of us have known this for some time but have been reluctant to tell you, so as not to incur your wrath.

I would take a portion of your excess liquidity and treat yourself to some survival supplies that you have refused to get because it wasn't the "best deal". Some freeze-dried food or MRE's come to mind. If you are stuck in your hidy-hole for a couple weeks because the balloon went up, you'll wish you had something other than wheat for that stretch of time.

Think about it.

Got a spare bicycle?

Do you have a bug out bag?

Do you have standard set of hand tools? Wire cutters, needle nose, vise grips, the usual stuff?

Picture of your fifth wheel doesn't show a awning. Got shade?

How deep do you have to drill to hit water?

There is always something to waste money on. got a solar shower?

Got a good handgun,a good knife? A good sleeping bag?

I have been reading your articles for years and I know you have a van (used for storage)a pickup truck that died, wheat out the ass, enfields and 303's. What else you got would make a terrific article.

I think you need to get humping on that underground home or pile sandbags around your trailer.

I'm beginning to learn this also. On my micro-income, I actually have extra, and seem to spend it just as stupidly as when I had a lot of money. Like the mister I got for my chickens that makes the coop too wet and is a PITA to use. $10 down the drain. It may come in handy some time but this whole place is covered in stuff that may come in handy sometime.

I have 3 scanner radios. One that I got new for $200 and haven't even opened the box. One that was $5 at a garage sale and was probably $200 new, although isn't as fancy as the first. And a little 20-frequency flat one that I got for $2 at a ham radio fest. It was marked $5 but then the audio died so it went down to $2. Turns out the problem is a ribbon connector inside and is easy to fix, but I won't bother until the problem shows up. THAT's the one I listen to. I've got 3 guns which is very possibly 2 more than I'll ever need. 2 commercial grade soldering irons and never had to use even one with the tech industry in the crapper. A fair amount of test equipment in a new world where all ya need is a battery, wires with test clips, and a light bulb. You can do a shitton of basic testing with just those things, even a fair idea of voltage level.

One problem is that in our society, as much as possible, we've been taught that fun == spending money. People don't get together and play cards, remember cribbage and whist and bridge? Playing for matches? It's before my time too but you get the idea. How about "barbershop" singing, getting together and playing music in general? Fishing? Beachcombing, walks in the woods or fields, together or alone, finding a few things for dinner or a snack or some cool rock or shell etc. Guys used to get together and shoot rats at the dump. Yeah you had to afford guns and the .22 ammo, likely shorts as they were cheaper, but the expense was minimal.

This was before TV (other than a few crappy channels) the internet, cell phones, glossy magazines telling you what to buy (but you had MAD with a glossy cover telling you to be very cynical of buying stuff) most "fashion", and the modern habit of wearing shoes year 'round.

You, Sir, need a hobby. Us poor/frugal guys don't get much in the way of vacations, and everyone's too busy working all the time (and distrusting each other) to find good plinking buddies. I'm learning the harmonica myself. You've never believe the shit you can play on a simple old Marine Band in the key of C.

another direction, think bees. Top bar hives are cheap to make. Honey would go good with the fodder you have stored & bee's wax has more BTU's than regular candle wax, both of them are similar to Propane. Bees supply your Heat!

A new solid hair brush for His Hairness... I like 10:13's idea but would probably say a rifle like ruger 10/22 broken down and a bury tube with 2K in ammo.
$10 - $50 for the tube, $35-40 for ammo (if you didnt prep enough) and a used 22 for $200 would be relatively cheap way to have peace of mind.

Then later you can come over to the darkside and get an AR or AK.

I own 3 mobile home parks.. You NEED alot of stuff you wouldn't think you would.. Tractor with bucket and backhoe being my top priority. Truck and trailer to haul it. (think 1 ton) snow removal equipment (I assume) the list is endless.. Tho I know a guy that buys them in parks, fixes, and rents them. Much less equipment. Alot more hastle.

Mostly you need to deal with people.. That's my least favorite part. That and not getting paid while their big screen tv blares 24/7 cable in behind them and the pizza guy gets his money WHILE YOU ARE THERE, HEARING HOW THEY HAVE NO MONEY.

I've thought about trading you several times.

Noticed your link to the Remmy .303 brass. I've been hearing the the quality has dropped over the last several years. Me? I bought 1500 cases back when everyont thought it was gonna be Missus President Clinton.

For those not initiated into the Enfield Cult, the cartridge headspaces on the rim, and the chambers are cut a bit deep and not at all uniformly, so it's best to neck size only and keep them separated by rifle.

Besides being a Cheap Bastard, I'm also lazy and therefore will not mark the cases, so I keep 'em sorted by headstamp, and I'd like to suggest Prvi Partizan. They're thicker near the base, so you don't get that stretch ring down near the rim. Plus, they last longer. Also, 148 grain steel core bullets pulled from 7.62x54R work just fine in the Enfield's bore.

You can thank me by sending several hundred PP cases. Filling them with gold dust might seem excessive to some, but not to me.

A minion with an opinion.

Buy alcohol. You can drink it when you are depressed or, after the SHTF, barter it.

I would suggest renting some basic power equipment and get cracking on the underground bunker. Digging that thing out by hand could take you way past doomsday.

I still think it makes sense on flat land to build half down and half up for an earth sheltered home. Dig a big hole. Use the stuff you dig up to make an earth berm. It makes letting in some light and air a bit easier.

1. Dig the Home Hole and buy lots of isolation to cover it and use the money to build a strong roof cover with lots of dirt.

2. After the Home Hole build the Home Cistern. The roof of both and surrounding area can fill it most of the year so you don't need to haul all the water from the river or town. Your glorious hair can be bathed in rain water every night.

3. Build a shed on top of the Home Hole to hide the entrance.

That should use enough money for the next year.

Buy some pornographic DVDs. They'll be good for trade in a post-collapse situation, and they can come in "handy" even if nothing ever goes wrong.
