“It can’t happen here” is the incantation the general public, and, sadly, the majority of preppers all chant whenever an unpleasant topic is brought up. Dictatorship, famine, urban anarchy zones, tribal warfare, killing for resources, all these just simply just not possible. The flag is unfurled, a crisp Boy Scout salute is rendered, and the ritual chanting begins. “We are the freest, love it or leave it, can-do spirit, global breadbasket, rule of law, not a third world banana republic, melting pot, free market creates jobs”. Wow! And I thought I was the worlds record holder for denying reality during the divorce to the mother of my children ( all others before or since were mediocre affairs, almost non-events ). Being a guy, I was busy adding to and crossing off the list titled “logical reasons why we should stay together and how to present them for her consideration” while she had long ago decided in a microsecond that in fact she no longer loved me, I was indeed a scumbag, she couldn’t believe she was conned into having my children and because I had taken advantage of her I was to punished until the day I died, oh, and while she was on the subject I was a terrible lover and she had faked all her orgasms. But, thanks to the current worldwide civilization collapse that is already underway, I now am surrounded by people that are much bigger idiots than I am and that makes me feel much better about myself. Hell, I even had relatively young age on my side to excuse my moronic acts, while they have no excuse for denying what they see going on around them. In comparison, I am a friggin genius if I do say so myself. Indeed, in the valley of the blind the one eyed man is king.

Honestly, I don’t know how anyone can claim we are free anymore. We have such a mind melting amount of regulations governing every activity that everyone, even the lawyers and politicians themselves, daily break the law without even realizing it. We think we have freedom of action when in fact what we have is such a narrow and sporadic enforcement of those laws that we are left with the perception that we can do as we please. And that isn’t even getting into the whole un-Constitutional actions by all levels of government. In actual fact, we are free to do nothing without permission. Just because we can complain about it doesn’t make us free. And just because the media downplays all acts of a desperate despot doesn’t mean this country isn’t ruled as totalitarian regime. That velvet glove works wonders to placate the masses ( my perception is reality! ). FDR forcibly took all legal money and replaced it with paper currency that automatically depreciated 40% overnight, then drafted those civilians into military service, locked up a few funny looking foreigners ( never mind they were second or third generation Americans. They LOOKED foreign ) and you can look at me with a straight face and tell me we are the freest people on earth?

Americans also have a great Can Do spirit. If we are screwing over other tribes and stealing their resources, we sure as heck can do it. Don’t get me wrong, that is the way it is supposed to work, and I love being on the winning side. What pisses me off is that now we are all the new victims. I want to stay on the winning side, damnit. Every revolution eats its young, and the American Revolution, after enriching itself at the expense of the continents natives, plus other European powers contending imperial ambitions ( the Cherokee [ or was it Cheyenne? ]did wonders retarding the advance of the Spanish into Texas and points north, so in effect they did all the heavy lifting for us. Britain did a great job weakening France to the point she sold us a bunch of land in America. We let the Allies wear down Germany for about three years before we got involved, and let the Nazi’s and the Commies do the same. We were more victorious vulture than military juggernaut ), left with no other victims after turning global plunderer after two world wars, is now consuming the accumulated wealth of its citizens. I don’t care how noble your spirit, how strong your work ethic or how bouncy your enthusiasm is, once you are held down by a mob, you are going to be violated.

Ah, the myth of the global bread basket. The thing about a fertile farming region is, sooner or later it goes infertile from over production. All through history. North Africa used to be a great breadbasket for Europe ( well, Rome in particular ). The Ukraine is once again a breadbasket for Russia, but if it wasn’t for the drastically falling population brought about by their economic collapse ( mostly through reaching their Peak Oil- the current petroleum wealth they are living off right now is primarily natural gas, which, I hope they remember, crashes much quicker than oil after it reaches plateau of production ) then their current drought would have crushed that regions capacity. Our Midwest is way past the fertile point, and only by imputing huge amounts of petroleum are we able to keep up its productivity ( which has long ago reached the point of diminishing returns ). Current drought, coupled with historic overproduction will very soon equal reduced yields, even without Peak Oil factoring in. And remember, while famine has always been in small isolated pockets here, malnourishment has been the norm because of economics ( ghettos, Appalachians, Indian reservations, Reconstruction in the South after the War Of Northern Aggression, almost everywhere during the Great Depression ). A malnourished body, with a weakened immune system, dies of other causes which are listed on the death certificate. A legal cover up on the statistics of quasi-famine.

The rule of law. Okay, I agree we have a great system that abides by the rule of law. No arbitrary rulers. No life or death to the peasants on a whim. The only problem is, the law gets interpreted as those in power see fit. It is the very same thing as arbitrary rule, but with a flowery camouflage. As far as being a third world tinpot dictatorship, exhibit A would be the voting/hanging chad, blatant electronic voting machine fraud, with a Supreme Court rushing in to declare the hand picked winner ( the signifigance of that? The Supreme Court takes years to decide anything. This time, weeks ). Exhibit B, the Occupy Wall Street fiasco. As New York Cities finest Warriors In Blue are beating the heads of peaceful protesters in, ambassadors in the UN are accusing Syria of human rights violations. Exhibit C, preemptive wars. Does any of these sound like a crazy ass dictator like Chavez? Right here in the good ol USA, brother. Happening here.

How about killing each other over resources? We killed the Indians for their land ( thanks for the uranium to kill off Iraqi kids, Navaho dudes- here, have a gallon of whiskey on us ). We killed our brothers and cousins in a civil war to retain control of the federal government, then lost it to the bankers. It was very small scale, but there have been plenty of herding and water wars out West ( now, the winners are being defeated by urban dwellers taking all the water for lawns. Think about it, we have decimated half this countries agricultural industry for a nice shiny pretty patch of green to compliment our parked SUV-or, worse, made super giant deluxe lawns for old fat guys to hit balls around on. We are as short sighted as the jag-offs going about business as usual as the hot ash of Vesuvius descended on the town ). We kill children in our colonies. You really think it is far fetched to believe in a short period we will be shooting each other over everything?

Melting pot, my ass. The only reason we all get along is that there was enough jobs to keep us all headed toward the middle class nirvana of desert lawns, sheetrock castles and gas guzzling sedans. You want a preview of race wars, look no further than the rust belt. In fact, the New York City race riots during the Civil War never ended. Yankees, with all their sneering at the South, were just if not more racist, and it was about money. Oh, the Irish are taking our jobs. We hate them. Oh, the Italians are taking our jobs, we hate them. Oh, the blacks are taking our jobs, we hate them. A whole lot of hating going on up there in Yankeeland. At least in the South they are polite and civil to those they hate. Now, that is class. Jobs are disappearing. I can’t fathom how we lose a half million jobs a month and the official rate of unemployment stays at 9%. Anyway, as always, as jobs get scarce, the racial wars start. You already see raw hatred directed towards Mexicans. It was all fine and dandy when the house prices were going up, then it was cool for Jose to climb up on the roof and put shingles on. Now that there aren’t any construction jobs, magically, by sending Jose back to Mexico ( with a lower unemployment rate than ours as more manufacturing goes from China to Mexico- thank goodness because the quality is better ) we think by taking those non-jobs our unemployment rate will fall.

All things associated with collapse have already happened here. Before, oil/coal based growth glossed over the negatives. Now, with no growth, it will all come back. To stay.

It was the Cheyenne who stopped the Spanish-Mexicans cold at a critical time. The Pueblo get an honorable mention for their revolt in 1680. This revolt sped up the transfer of guns and horses to the plains indians. The Apache were the first benificiaries, but then the Cheyenne kicked them into the badlands. Then the Cheyenne kicked around just about everyone until they had an empire-style collapse starting somewhere around 1840.
Certainly there were attrocities on either side of the war with Indians but they pretty much were successful in killing as many immigrants as the immigrants and army were in killing them. A simple fact most people simply don't understand; that is the Indians killed a lot of European immigrants. They certainly killed as many European immigrants as the immigrants killed Indians.
Tibalism - Yep you are right it is happening now, the markers however are NOT skin color but speech(language)and dress. If your skin is as black as the ace of spades but wear a tie and talk in buisness buzzwords you can be a republican presidential contender. If you are blond haired and blue eyed but too tanned and dressed in hard worn blue collar clothes and speaking spanish you'll be told to 'go back home to mexico'.
Killing the children- Yep, what do you think abortion 'rights' are about. With the coming republican political victory and tightening belt for the government the government is going to quit paying for the welfare baby factories instead telling them to get married or get fixed. and thats just the begining.
Fixed elections? - yep always has been, a two party system one party asks if you want lube the other asks if you want a condom, either way you get raped.
Unstable currency?- you bet.
Melting pot?- nope its been DECADES now that they have been trying to make more tribalism with their new 'salad bowl' metaphor.
The freest country?- Well, we are but that doesnt mean we (or any other nation) are as free as we used to be. And we were never as free as we pretended to be.
Comming famine?- Nope the famine is already here on a global scale, thus the revolutions in some many countries. The USA will be amongst the slowest to be hit by it, but the hardest hit by the peak oil caused one.
The malnourished dieing from other causes?- Of course, and dont overlook the increased chance of plague(s) because of it.
Military vulturism?- Well duh, thats just good tactics and strategy.
Once again Lord of the Follical superiority you have stated that which SHOULD be obvious but that so many refuse to see. Thank you for helping us keep peeking over the rose coulored glasses instead of gazing steadily through them.

To Anon 7:54 (from comment section on "Hauling lectric")
I've lived off grid for almost 20 years so I know a little about solar panels ;). Since 1992, I have built a back-to-the-land homestead which is almost 2 miles from the nearest grid power.
My new cabin does get some sun, just not all day. So the panels will provide some power. The panels just won't be used to their full capacity.
If I was spending money to buy some panels, this wouldn't make much sense and I would be better off just using my small 2,000 watt Honda generator to charge the batteries.
However, a friend gave me 4-25 watt panels. Didn't cost me anything. Plus I have 2 forklift batteries (deep cycle) that were part of a package deal at an auction sale. So I'm not out any moola.
So I might as well put them up at my cabin even if they only get a few hours of sun a day as oppose to storing them in my shed (where they've been for the last year).
I realize that I won't be getting peak power. Hence my fascination with the uber low watt RV lighting.
In response to the other question, "Why don't I run an AC line from my solar/batter/inverter set-up?"
I'm trying to stay away from depending on an inverter.
This little cabin is a "game" on how comfortable but simple can I make it.
I'm using all the knowledge I've gained in the last 20 year from building my own home, living off-grid and living simply to see how self-contained, low impact yet comfortable I can make this little retreat cabin.
Think Amish with a few electric luxuries tossed in--running water, low-level lighting and indoor composting toilet.
And yes, considering I think this is fun, I should get out more.

To russell 1200: Nobody kicked any Native into the 'badlands'. It's where we chose to go you stupid f*#k. Whatever you paid for your discount knowledge, it was way too much. The Cheyenne couldn't lift the balls of a Lakota. Learn some real history.
Guy, please don't stop drinking on my account.
An account of the Comanche-Apache war starts at page 31 of Hamalainen's Comanche Empire (not my original source mind you but an easier one to find). He goes into detail as to how and why the Comanche-Ute alliance was victorius. He also gives a brief account of the original rise of the Apache before their defeat.
The Lakota (Sioux) and Comanche usually had other tribes between them. The Comanche faded out before the Lakota reached their peak. The Lakota were thus the deadlier threat to the U.S. Cavalary in the 1870s and thus their "Empire" is better known in Anglo-Saxon histories.
